200.0. "Help needed in designing prayer brochure" by ICS::KAUFMANN (Life is short; pray hard) Fri Jul 16 1993 12:10

I need help in designing a missions prayer brochure.

I've been asked by my missions pastor to create a template for a prayer
brochure. This brochure will be distributed to members of our church
to encourage them to pray for missionaries and missions work around the
world. The template should be re-usable to update/change prayer items.

Rather than put this is a text-based, list format, I'd like to use a
map of the world, placing short prayer items on the map.

Since I'm not terribly creative at this kind of thing, I'd like to ask
for your help in designing this prayer brochure.

How can I design an effective brochure?

200.4Why Pray [Part 1]JULIET::MORALES_NASweet Spirit's Gentle BreezeTue Jul 20 1993 11:3749
    Bo,

I went home and searched and searched for the pamphlet and couldn't
find it, but I did find the outline I wrote down. I hope this helps:

    Why Pray?

First, prayer is not confession, praising, meditation or adoring,
although we should include those things when we pray. The Greek word
for prayer is ATEO, which means TO ASK.

    I. God commands us to pray

I Thess 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the
Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance
                    and supplication for all saints;

19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me,
that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the
                    mystery of the gospel,

[Other References Luke 18:1, Phil 4:6]

II. Prayer allows us to get things from God

James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and
cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not,
               because ye ask not.

    III. Cure for Worry

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests
                     be made known unto God.

Psalms 55:1 Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself
                     from my supplication.

2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint,
                     and make a noise;

IV Only way to have the power of the Holy Spirit

Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto
your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father
give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

200.6How to Pray [Part 3]JULIET::MORALES_NASweet Spirit's Gentle BreezeTue Jul 20 1993 12:0565
Prayer diaries or journals are a common practice to some folks in here
and foreign to many. My Pastor introduced a 3-ring subject notebook to
use for organizing and journalling prayers. I am going to do my best
    to recreate this for you.

The notebook is divided into topics:

    SELF

You write down your needs and date them.

    OTHERS [Your Family First]

    Mate and their needs
Example: [You want to see their prayers come true, list them and ask God
    to meet them]

Children listed one by one and their needs
[Example] Salvations, Baptisms, College Funds, Future Mates

    [OTHERS] UNSAVED

List their names and the date you started praying for them

    [OTHERS] SAVED

    Example:
    Illnesses
    Broken Marriages
    Children going Wrong
    Unemployed
    Broken Relationships

Make yourself the number one prayer target. Too many times we get on
our knees and ask God to *fix* someone else [usually a mate], and
we ignore our own weaknesses and sin. Always start with self.

Then, go to your spouse and ask for God to meet their needs as you
intimately know them and for the unspoken needs. Be visionary,
anticipate the burden and load your spouse carries with work, family,
    financies, church service, etc.

Be careful that you're not criticizing your mate in prayer. There is a
difference between praying for their needs and complaining.

Then for your young children/teenagers. Of course you place their
salvation and relationship to God on the top of your list and write
down when they are saved. Don't forget to be visionary here as well
and pray for their future mates, their choice of colleges, their
service to God or career in the secular workplace.

Next, the OTHERS category, which I believe is self explanatory.
Oftimes this is the most difficult, yet it's the easiest because if you
know of other's needs, it's because they've told you and requested for
prayer. For instance, topic 6 in here... may be the most difficult to
remember in your prayer [all those requests] and yet you don't have to
be visionary or selfless, you just pray for them asking God's
    intervention in their lives.

    I hope this helps you.

    In Him,
    Nancy

200.5Types of Prayer [Part 2]JULIET::MORALES_NASweet Spirit's Gentle BreezeTue Jul 20 1993 12:2149
                             TYPES of PRAYER

    1. Personal Prayer

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and
when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which
is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall
                 reward thee openly.

    2. Early Morning

Mark 1:35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he
went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there
               prayed.

    3. All Night Prayer

Luke 6:12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a
mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

    4. Pastoral Prayer

Acts 6:4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the
              ministry of the word.

    5. Church Prayers

Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and
supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of
               Jesus, and with his brethren.

Acts 1:24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the
hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and
fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

    7. Fasting

Matthew 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and
                   fasting.

Mark 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing,
                   but by prayer and fasting.

Luke 2:37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years,
which departed not from the temple, but served God with
fastings and prayers night and day.

I have to admit that going back and re-reading .4 - .6 has once again
encouraged me to pray more diligently.

Speaking of keeping prayer journals, does anyone out there keep a
sermon journal, either your own or your Pastor's?

Most pastors do.
I keep all of my bible lessons. :-)
I don't know of anyone who keeps records of other people's sermons,
though most people will remember if their Pastor preached the same
sermon twice, even if it occurs in a ten year span.
200.11JULIET::MORALES_NASweet Spirit's Gentle BreezeThu Jul 07 1994 13:564
I take notes when Pastor preaches/teaches and have a journal or
reference if you will to go back and re-submerge myself.

    It helps my walk.
