199.0. "The Jealous God" by TOKNOW::METCALFE (Eschew Obfuscatory Monikers) Fri Jul 16 1993 10:48

I flipped through some channels when I arrived home and came across an interview.
Then I saw it was the Oprah Winfrey show. This was not her usual format.
And the people were interesting, so I camped out for a while.

One comment made was that Oprah heard her preacher (when she was younger)
say that "'I the Lord Your God am a jelous God,' and I thought to myself,
'What does an omnipotent God He have to be jealous about? He has everything.'"

I wanted to answer her. I even wrote a letter that will likely never be sent
(no address).

When God gave us free will, He gave up ownership of our decisions. Choice.
God still owns our souls. The Psalmist says that returns to God when we die.

I did a quick online search on the word "jealous" and made an interesting
discovery. Very quickly I saw that in just about every occurrence (I didn't
go through all of them), God states that He is a jealous God when our
affections are for other gods and idols.

God is jealous for our affection and doesn't want it squandered, or rather,
prostituted on other gods.

       Relationship.

Lest we think we can use our affections as a bargaining piece, forget it.
God doesn't bargain with terrorists. He offers love and indescribable peace
when we give him our affections, our devotions, our love. Affections that
are bought isn't love; it's whoring.

God has something to be jealous about, Oprah.

It sounds like Oprah or her guests did not accept the words of her
preacher [and of scripture]. Either that or they did not understand
    the meaning.

Can you tell us what it was that they disagreed with or what they
said that was contrary to this?

Good, Mark....

Many times, people don't distinguish between jealousy and envy. They think
that both are 'wrong' and 'selfish', because they tend to be used in the same
way.

'Envy' is always wrong; it 'wants' because someone else 'has'. It is
destructive - it would be satisfied as much by destroying the quality or
attribute it envies, as by possessing it for itself.

'Jealousy' can be used much like envy - wanting a position for self; but it
is more strictly, protective. Protective of right, guarding what should
be...

We are made in the image of God, witnessing that we are His, and owe Him
allegience. We have spoilt that image, but are still accountable to Him.
Our worship given elsewhere is a shameful prostitution, as Mark pointed
out; it merits destruction, rather than misuse.

I find it such a comfort to know that it is th LORD Jesus Who maintains the
universe. It only continues to exist by His direct and personal choice and
action. He is not going to sustain a totally evil world. He has set the
limits, and when His limits are reached, He will intervene. Again.

Even so, come, LORD Jesus!

Mary, (.1)
It was a passing comment before the commercial break by Oprah and
I did not remember the reason she brought it up. The whole week's
shows were interviews with people who are champions against hatred,
discrimination etc. (Or so I gathered).

Mark

(Welcome back, Andrew)
