177.0. "Bye-bye DEC - Hello Farm Country" by HERIAM::BERNIER (Quit Ye Like Men... 1 Cor 16:13,14) Thu Jun 17 1993 09:58

I haven't been part of the noting community here for some time due to a
job change that severely limits such activity. God has been doing some
awesome and scary things in the lives of my family. The most dramatic
of which I'd like to share with you all now.

For some time I felt that my calling in life was to live simply on a
small homestead. It appears that I will now be moving into that
calling. While on vacation the last 2 weeks we looked at land prices in
mid-New York state, feeling God's leading to move there. It was a good
time, filled with much prayer and seeking of God's will for our future.

By the time we returned to MA we had confirmed in our hearts God's
plan of action. We also sought the counsel of the pastors and brethren
of our church, and everyone we spoke with confirmed the matter.

So it is with mixed emotions (hope for the future and sadness at
missing you all) that I tell you that effective yesterday I have given
my notice of resignation to DEC. They require a 30 day notice but have
waived that since they are not going to replace me.

Next Monday a realtor will be coming by to assess the market value of
our house. Already 3 families we know have expressed interest in
    purchasing our home.

Please pray that we stay in step with God in all of this stuff.
    Thanks!

Gil (Who has missed being here but will miss you all the more in about
    	a month.)

God bless you, Gil. Git out there and raise some godly children! :-)

Kind of reminds me of a song I remember hearing (on secular) radio a
few (well, probably many by this time) years back. The chorus went
    something along the lines of:

      Blow up the TV,
       Turn off the radio,
      Move to the country,
       Build a home.
      Have lots of children,
       Raise them on peaches,
Let them find Jesus } Aside from these last two lines, I like

You don't know me at all since I'm usally read-only, and not even
that lately due to a job change as well. But when I saw what your plans
were, I just had to repsond. My husband also just "got it" in the
current round of lay-offs, and guess what's up on our mantle at
home! A map of New York State! I don't know what the Lord is up
to there, but indeed the "calling" is strong! We have to get our
house "saleable" since we are in the middle of some remodeling, and
then (hopefully) it's off the central or western New York for us
as well! So if you get some new neighbors that still have Mass.
license plates, say hi, it might just be someone who travelled
    the same path as you!

May the Lord provide you with a safe move, and may you enjoy all
    that you find there!!!

    You folks are great!

Jim (.2) and Markem (.11)

Perhaps farming is not the best word for it. We prefer to call it homesteading.
We plan on having goats, chickens, turkeys, a couple of hogs and maybe raise a
beef calf (I plan to do my own slaughtering - ooh icky!! :-} .) We will
definately have a BIG garden and some fruit trees, with the goal of being food
self-sufficient eventually. I do not plan on making $$ doing this. I just want
to provide for my families needs (yes, I know hat God is really the One who
provides) and be able to pay my taxes.

Markel (.4)

> God bless you, Gil. Git out there and raise some godly children! :-)

Now that's the kind of encouragement that warms my heart, bro. Thanks!

We'll see. There's a small matter of hardware that needs to be taken care of
first.

CHOWDA::ORR (.10)

Praise God for His like leading in our lives. I'll try to send word to you
via this conference when we get settled. Perhaps you can come visit while you
are looking for a place. Oh, and I can relate to you and your husband about
home repairs. Any free time I have is going toward that direction. And our
place is in pretty decent shape, I can't imagine the time/effort needed for
lots of major repairs. Oy!

Markem, (.11)

>Bummer, former-co-ex-mod-friend. We never got to meet!

Well not yet anyway. We still have lots of family in these parts so I'm sure
we will be in the area from time to time. I too want to meet you and yours.

far, anyway).

Gil, Nancy, I've got a great idea. Gil allows Nancy to be a "squatter"
on a corner of his farm, err, homestead. :-) Nancy builds her log
cabin there, and she takes care of slopping the hogs!

You know Markel, sloppin' hogs is one of my forte's [gr]. When I was
growing up on the mini farm I used to crawl into the pigpen [BTW, if
you have hogs you'll want them off the ground, and all male hogs have
to have their maleness taken out, makes better meat] and all the
piggies would come nuzzle up against me... they were friendly and sweet
    critters.

And then the chickens... make sure you have trap doors on the henpens
so that you can reach and get the eggs without a fuss. And then move
your henpens around a lot, because underneath the henpens is the
richest garden soil... :-) And as far as gardening, you should move
your garden a lot too... just follow the henpens! :-)

And then theres the garbage separation... and making a compost...

    sigh..
    Nancy
177.17PCCAD::RICHARDJI Shoulda Been A CowboyFri Jun 18 1993 12:087
From my limited knowledge of farming, the worst part about raising hogs
is having a sufficient source of food for them. Its good if you can get
a restaurant to give you their garbage. Otherwise you'll be constantly
feeding them grain and then it becomes cheaper to buy pork from the
    market.

It was the Ziffles. And it was hillarious (one l or two?) to see the
only two sane people (Mr. Douglas and Mr. Drucker) surrounded by the
rest of the people. Teach the chilluns to make hot cakes on the spit,
Gil. And get yourself enough phone wire to go into the house.

Oh and one more tidbit. Sam Drucker was also on a few other shows,
so Green Acres isn't far from Petticoat Junction!

Going with Markel's suggestion, that would make Nancy -> Eb the farmhand!

Hey, Sandy, pigs are great! When I was in my teens, I used to help out a

down while he gave the injections ... burying one that died .. hanging my
coat carelessly just in their reach, so it got eaten... And that's just
the mentionable ones ;-)

Gil, enjoy the bit of His creation that the LORD's drawing you close to...
I'd be envious is I wasn't totally inept in such matters ;-)
