61.0. "Want a present?" by ICTHUS::YUILLE (Jesus is coming back) Mon Mar 15 1993 09:04
At the beginning of his reign, when Solomon built the temple, he really
had a jamboree for the LORD. Too many sacrifices to count .... the glory
of the LORD filling the temple, so that they couldn't even sacrifice....
So he blew it badly later, but it's the good time I want to concentrate
on just now.
Before all this, God came to him in a dream, and said 'Ask for whatever
you want me to give you' 2 Chronicles 1:7 / 1 Kings 3:5 ....
Open cheque, with God's signature. A bit like James 1:5...
If God made you that offer, so explicitly, what would you ask for? Not
necessarily to answer here, unless you want to (though that would be
interesting, I guess...), more to take in your heart before the LORD,
bearing in mind that He is the great King, so don't make it trivial.
I saw a card at the weekend where an up-to-date woman is depicted as
musing,
"....if I could have anything at all, it would be world peace...
......or
....hold it....
....make that slim thighs instead...."
Now that is so banal that it amused me, but is at the same time typical
of the way we live. We want such big targets that we can shrug ourselves
out of being any part of the answer. If we're going to 'save the world',
we have to start with the guy next to us. And to start with him means
getting to know him as a person. Relating to him. Not being better than,
but letting God have an opportunity to shine through us....
It hurts that Solomon blew it so badly. He was commended for asking for
wisdom, rather than wealth, death of his enemies, etc, but what he asked
for was still man-directed, rather than God-directed. In my book, he
could have gone a whole degree better. *Then* he might have stayed
faithful to the LORD..... And my guess is, he'd have got the wisdom as a
bonus - as well as actually getting wealth as a bonus.
LORD, help me keep You at the centre of my heart.....
God bless you folks
Andrew
