10.0. "Thought for the Days" by TOKNOW::METCALFE (Eschew Obfuscatory Monikers) Fri Feb 19 1993 09:03

I know we have a 'verse of the day' topic, and I didn't want
to break the flow of that, so thought I'd start a new topic
that could include many different, inspiring contributions -
and not necessarily always scripture quotes, but others as
well.

Let's call this "Thought for the day".

The following is posted with permission, in the hopes that this
will be as uplifting and inspiring to others as it was to me...

Bob sends these over the net, and they always minister to me.

Enjoy.

Subj:	Who do you want as a shepherd?

"Should not a shepherd take care of the flock? You eat the curds,
clothe yourselves with the wool, and slaughter the choice animals,
but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened
the weak or healed the sick, or bound up the injured. You have not
brought back the strays or searched out the lost."
Ezekiel 34:2b,4 (NIV)

"I am the Good Shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just
as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life
for the sheep."
John 10:14-15 (NIV)

And He strengthens the weak, and heals the sick. He binds up the injured
and seeks out the strays and those who are lost. He is our Lord, the Good
Shepherd.

Bob

Subj:	Life in Jesus

"Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of
those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man
the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in
Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."
1 Corinthians 15:20-22 (NIV)

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who
believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives
and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
John 11:25,26 (NIV)

We have what no one else has! Through our belief in Jesus, though our
bodies die, we will, like him, have life eternal! Glory to God!!
Love,
Bob

Subj:	The Spirit of Truth points us to Jesus

"This is the one who came by water and blood - Jesus Christ. He did
not come by water alone, but by water and blood. And it is the
Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are
three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the
three are in agreement."
1 John 5:6-8 (NIV)

"I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to
baptize with water told me, 'the man on whom you see the Spirit
come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'"
John 1:33 (NIV)

Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Man, brings us the Spirit of Truth
from the Father.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle
and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my
yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Matthew 11:28,29 (NIV)

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then,
and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Galations 5:1 (NIV)

In returning to a yoke of slavery, we would be throwing away the freedom
Christ has won for us! Again being burdened by the demands of the world!

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are
perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written; 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the
intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.'"
1 Corinthians 1:18,19 (NIV)

wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of
the intelligent will vanish."

His death on the cross brought us salvation.

not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we

covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count

"I came to you in weakness and fear, and with trembling. My message
and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a
demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not
rest on men's wisdom but on God's power."
1 Corinthians 2:3-5 (NIV)

"For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God,
which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not
give us a Spirit of timidity, but a Spirit of power, of love and of
self-discipline."

Hi,

I didn't know where else to post this.

What is this "By believing, you MIGHT have life more abundantly?"

I think it should be, you WILL.

I don't get it. I mean this is right there when _anyone_ goes
into the Conference. The abundance of our life is measured by
the magnitude of our faith. But it must be MORE abundant, there's
no question about it!

Please consider removing the 'might' from that phrase.

Faith is the substance.

Tony

Tony,
"Might" is a scriptural quote:

John 20:31 KJV
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

the abundantly part comes from Christ's words in John 10:10b (KJV):

"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it
more abundantly."

I think is is less a question of the result of believing; we know
abundant life to be true. I think it is more of the condition that
one can possess IF they believe.

Mark

> Please consider removing the 'might' from that phrase.

Would you, given the scriptures above?

10.9....Life, through His Name....ICTHUS::YUILLEJesus is coming backTue Mar 09 1993 04:4416
The particular clip from the context can give an unfortunate connotation for
anyone unfamiliar with the full verse.

In it's full glory, this verse is saying that LIFE is now actually
available! Formerly we lived under an awareness of certain guilt and
condemnation before a holy and righteous God; but John has written this
gospel expressly to let mankind know that we can enter in to possess the
freedom of eternal forgiveness that Jesus Christ, the Son of God has bought
for us...

ie the 'conditional' aspect of 'might' lies in us, not in Him.

Uh, like Mark said ... ;-)

but it *is* exciting

"Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in
the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on
you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends,
but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to
revenge; I will repay,' says the Lord."
Romans 12:17-19 (NIV)

"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Proverbs 3:7,8 (NIV)

Lord God, teach me to be understanding, slow to speak, quick to listen,
and slow to become angry, that I may be healthy in mind, body and spirit.

"He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated
his own body. For this reason a man will leave his father and
mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
This is a profound mystery - but I am talking about Christ and the
church. However, each one you also must love his wife as he loves
himself, and the wife must respect her husband."
Ephesians 5:28-33 (NIV)

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united
to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
Genesis 2:24 (NIV)

Father, we pray in the name of Jesus, for an infilling of love, for all
marriages. Through this love, families will unite in strength!! One flesh,
one mind, one spirit!

Those who really irritate you. Your really frustrated with them. Pray
that the Holy Spirit changes YOUR attitude towards THEM. (heart
surgery).

David called Saul "The Lords annointed" and yet he was his enemy.
David perceived his enemy as his enemy was perceived by God. Picture
unbelievers before God's judgement seat-but potentially redeemable.
And believers kneeling before the cross, accepting God's grace by
Jesus' blood.

Reject retaliation against someone (vengence in MINE, saith the
Lord--not yours). Focus on a positive perception of people.

Respect your rivals dignaty. (verse 19) pray and be concerned when
they fail. Vs. 23 Remember selectively. Only good. Don't dwell on
the bad in someone. Remember your rivals strengths, not their
weakness.

This is part of a lesson I learned 2 weeks ago at church, and has
helped me to put my "rival" or "enemie" --and those who frustrate me--
into perspective. The saying "love thy enemies" has taken on a whole
new meaning. We ARE different when we let the Holy Spirit guide us in
this manner.

the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything
in the world - the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and

During the most difficult trials we must cling to that promise, then our
tears will become tears of joy, and our mourning turn to rejoicing!

sincerity of that love places others needs before our own.
Father, build within me the knowledge of your love, that I might better
serve you through your people.

to God and tell Him, 'God I can't handle this on my own.' What He takes
from you in anxieties, He will give back in peace.

Subj:	This land is OUR land, preserve its values!!

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves,
and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways,
then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin,
and will heal their land."
2 Chronicles 7:14(NIV)

As any of us can see our country does not receive its motivation from a
Christian attitude. What our Founding Fathers started, as a 'Country under
God', has moved away from that concept and become very materialistic and
now is turning toward a socialistic way of life.

What does this mean for us? "Our value principles, that stem from the Word
of God, will become unacceptable values."

As the early Christians were driven below the city of Rome, to avoid
becoming food for the lions, or the church of Russia being driven into
hiding for fear of the Government, so will our day be seen, cloaked in
secrecy for fear of the world.

Today is no different, people are being devoured by the roaring lion,
drawn into darkness and led onto a path that drains the Life from them.
MOST people don't even know it is happening, or are burying their heads in
the sand to avoid dealing with it.

You CAN make a difference!!! You CAN turn things around!! God GAVE us the
WAY out of this, but YOU need to take the action! You don't need to wait
until May to gather around a flag pole! You don't have to wait until
Sunday services! You can storm the Gates of Heaven every day, every hour
of every day!!!

In the Scripture above, God tells us if we, 'will humble ourselves, and
pray, and seek His face,' that he would heal our land!!

Set aside at least 5 minute every day to offer up a specific prayer for the
conversion of the present attitude, back to the True Way!! Unite your
prayer with others around the world seeking the same conversion. If you've
never made a commitment to prayer, then DO IT NOW!! Our Land needs a
RENEWAL!!!!

Mark your calendar, desk pad, mirror, doors as reminders of this
commitment.

"Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your
heart.  Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this;
He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of
your cause like the noon day sun."
Psalm 37:4-6(NIV)

"Therefore I tell you, 'Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that
you have received it and it will be yours.'"
Mark 11:24 (NIV)

"You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it"
John 14:14 (NIV)

May God bless you and show you His kindness. May He be your motivational
source of strength. May He hear your prayer and grant the desire of your
heart.

Bob

of God has flowed into every corner of the world and given every person the
chance to repent, He will cause it to linger, for the good of all.

"I have learned the secret of being content in any and every
situation, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything
through him who gives me strength."
Philippians 4:12b-13 (NIV)

is brought to perfection in you.

Subj:	the difference between life and death is repentance.

"Since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of
God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to

Even though we sin, if we repent of the sin, God is forgiving and loving and
will replace our soiled clothes with new white robes. But God's justice is
equally the same for those who sin but do not repent. He turns them over
to a depraved mind to do what they ought not to do and the wager of sin is
death.

I have come not to abolish but to fulfill them. I tell you the

"Your attitude should be that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in the very
nature of God, did not consider equality with God something to be
grasped at, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in
appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death
- even death on a cross!"
Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)

"He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was
led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as sheep before her shearers is
silent, so he did not open his mouth, By oppression and judgment he
was taken away."
Isaiah 53:7,8a (NIV)

Stretch a line along the Way you are walking, is it straight? Are there
people you tend to avoid, does the line curve and twist around them?
Do certain areas along the path have blocks of pride that cause the line to

more trust in yourself? How wise are you in the ways of the Lord?

"It is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He
anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit
in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."
2 Corinthians 1:21,22 (NIV)

"Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised
Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the
redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of his
glory."
Ephesians 1:13b,14 (NIV)

The world fights against being under the ownership of anyone. Yet God has
marked you with a seal, His Spirit, a seal of ownership. What is your

Subj:	Suffering for Christ is not broken bones!

"We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a
slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do
I do not do, but what I hate to do."
Romans 7:14 (NIV)

"Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also
with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is
done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly
life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God."
1 Peter 4:1,2 (NIV)

The suffering we must do in this life is not focused on physical pain, but
the crucifixion of our bodies to sin. The rooting out of earthly desires.
It is not circumcision of your flesh, but the circumcision of your heart.

10.184Commentary on Note 9.251 (Phil 1:1-2)ODIXIE::HUNTThu Nov 03 1994 09:5044
This note is commentary on Phil 1:1-2 (Note 9.251). The commentary is
taken from the "Study Guide for the Book of Philippians" from the
"Mastering the Basics" series. The commentary is by Lyman Coleman and
Richard Peace. I got a lot out of these verses, which in the past I
have tended to skip over (Note: be sure to read the part on what
wishing "grace & peace" means).

vs 1 Paul & Timothy... This is not really a joint letter by the two
men. Paul includes Timothy's name in the salutation perhaps
because he was with him when the letter was written. Timothy was
with Paul when he visited Philippi for the first time.

servants... The Greek word used here (doulos) means literally "slaves."

To all... This letter was addressed not just to a select few in the
church at Philippi, but to everyone.

saints... The Greek word used here is _hagios_ and means "saints" when
it is a noun and "holy" when it is an adjective. This designation is
not meant to imply that the individuals to whom Paul was writing were
especially pious or that they lived lives of exceptional character. It
is a word used to denote those who are Christians, who because of their
union with Christ have been set apart to serve God.

In Christ Jesus... The people to whom Paul is writing became "saints"
not by any virtue of their own good works but because of their union with
Christ.

vs. 2 grace and peace

grace... This speaks of God's saving work in Christ Jesus whereby men
and women can experience forgiveness and new life--not because of what
they have done by way of good works--but because of what Jesus has done
for them on the cross. **To wish grace for others is to wish for them that
they will be able to live on the basis of the freely given love and power
of Jesus Christ in their lives--and not try to make it on their own in
their own power. **

peace... peace too is a gift of God. It defines the results of
Christ's saving activities. It is what people experience as a result
of having accepted the gift of grace.

from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ... The source of such
"grace and peace" is God the Father and Jesus the Son.

and this life is in his Son.

12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath
not life.

13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son
of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on
the name of the Son of God.

Do you know, as John writes above, that you have eternal life? God says that
those who have the Son do have eternal life. How do we know that we have
the Son? Romans 10:9 says "That if thou shalt confess with they mouth, the
Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from
the dead, thou shalt be saved", and Romans 10:13 says "For whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved"..

Do you know, as the Word of God says, that you have eternal life today?

Hi Fellow noters!

I couldn't find an exact topic I wanted to put this in, but I think
it could serve as a thought for the day.

This is a reprint of a message I sent to my brothers and sisters in
Christ from my church and a sister church here in town. They all
worked for Digital at the time but most have since departed. I was
just looking to print the song, but enjoyed reading my intro again so I
decided to include it. May this song bless you as it has me.

------------------------

Isn't it nice to be royalty and not have to be on the front page of the
Inquirer and to know that our inheritance doesn't end with death, but
lasts for all eternity.

I was listening to a song this morning. It's not just a song, but a
prayer. It's based on Phil. 3:10 and Matt. 25:34. I thought I'd type
it out real quick and maybe it will touch you as it did me.

Have a fabulous day and remember that you're loved by a God who reached
through time and heard your prayers for forgiveness. It's our common
bond. I love each of you because He first loved me and I long to be
more like Him.

Love, Jill

This is my heart's cry, I want to know the one who saved me and gave me
life. This is my heart's cry to be so close to Him that all my life
becomes a testimony of my Savior's grace and love. This is my heart's
cry.

This is my heart's cry, much more than just a great desire - it's like
a fire in me. I hear my heart cry each time I think about the cross
where Jesus died. The cross should have been mine, but His love broke
through time and heard my heart's cry - He heard my heart's cry.

Now every other hope and dream is lost inside of this one thing; to
know the One who died for me and live my life for Jesus Christ is my
heart's cry. So let my life become a testimony of my Savior's grace and
love. Oh- this is my heart's cry - to stand before the Father one day
and hear Him say well done - this is my heart's cry.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Political leaders promise many things when they run for office, and yet
when they get into office very few of those promises are kept. Their
views on issue change as the social and political climates change..we soon
learn that we can't place our faith in them. We take jobs in a place
where there is security, and we place faith in the business leaders that
they will keep our jobs secure, and we see that faith is misplaced as
economic conditions change.

We get upset at just minor changes..traffic rerouted due to road repair,
the cafeteria at work changes the location of coffee cups, appointments
are rescheduled. Everywhere we go, we face changes in areas in which we
felt no change was coming..

Some say that "Christianity needs to get with the 90's" and change when
society changes..but, seeing how we feel towards politicians and other
leaders when they change, how would we feel about our God, if he were to
change at whatever whim? How would we know what pleases Him and what does
not? How could we be sure if we were in His will, if His love towards
us is secure? That those who place their trust in the blood of Jesus
Christ to cleanse us truly have a place in Heaven?

I'm quite thankful that we have a loving God, who is the Rock, and doesn't
change, and is the same yesterday, today, and I can tell my kids and they
can tell theirs...that He will be the same..forever..

Thank you, Father, that you and you alone in the universe, do not change,
and will not..

10.227Romans 12:20HPCGRP::DIEWALDFri Aug 11 1995 12:2436
This came to me this morning and I though I would share it.

Someone recently posted a list of all occurances of "fire" in
the bible. What struck me at that time was that half of them
used fire in the context of pain and burning and suffering.
The other half used fire in the context of cleansing, redemption, and
purification. It seemed strange to me that one word could
be used in totally opposite ways. But then I realized that it
is really the same thing. Believers react one way, unbelievers the
other. To a believer fire is our friend, to an unbeliever fire
is pain and death and fear.

God uses bad things and turns them into good. For example Peter's
impulsive controlling nature was turned into a great leadership
ability by God. Another example is Saul who was turned into
Paul the great evangelist. Jesus's death is the best example.
At the time, the Apostles thought that Jesus's death was the most
terrible thing that could happen. Actually God used that terrible
event and turned it into the greatest act of all time.

Some people cannot tolerate the glory of God. It burns them. When we
become more Jesus like, it becomes pain to those and they fight it with
all their might.

Romans 12:20
If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this you will heap burning coals on his head.

Dear wonderful God, please reach down and heal these people. Release
their fear and anger and turn it into love for you O'Lord. Begin to
heal them O'Lord. Then use us to reach them. To show them Jesus,
so You can turn them into men of God. So they can truely know your son
Jesus Christ's sacrifice and act of true love for them.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God,
and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing,
whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

And a corresponding "thought" from Ecclesiastes 9:7 for those who walk
in righteousness according to God's commands:

Go, then, eat your food and enjoy it, and drink your wine with
a cheerful heart; for God has already accepted what you have
done.

Interestingly enough, this verse is quoted in a cookbook I have just before
recipes suggested for the pre-fast meal on Eruv Yom Kippur (evening of the
beginning of). Yom Kippur, one of the most solemn days of the Biblical
calendar includes fasting and prayer for repentence and God's forgiveness,
but the meal before beginning the fast is still to be enjoyed because we
know God is loving and merciful in His judgement, and those of us who know
the Messiah, Yeshua, also know that our sin has been atoned for already.

The Lord showed me this on friday, I thought I would share it.

The parable of the ten virgins is hard to understand. It seems like
the Christian thing to do would be to lend the five foolish virgins
some oil. But this is not what happens. Try looking at it this way.
Oil represents consecration and sanctification (Ex 29:21,27).
Sanctification is being cleansed and becoming more God-like. It
requires spiritual growth and study and desire to accomplish.

When the bridegroom appeared, the five virgins with the oil were the
ones sanctified and ready. They told the other virgins to go now and
buy some oil - but the foolish virgins weren't ready in time.

This parable shows that the five wise virgins were the ones that
loved God with all their heart and soul and mind and needed to be like
him and spent their lives wisely preparing for Him.

The five foolish virgins were the ones who stalled. They figured they
had all their life to get ready so they procrastinated and never did.
They just didn't have the hunger to learn. When they realized, at the
last moment, that the brigegroom was coming now they ran to the store
to try to become sanctified real fast. But it takes time and they
weren't ready.

The wise virgins couldn't give the foolish ones their oil. It was
part of their being and could not be given even if they had wanted to.
Actually the wise ones did want to help and guide the others and they
told the foolish ones where to go and how to go about becoming
sanctified. They told them to go to the oil sellers now and buy oil.
There just wasn't enough time. The foolish virgins didn't listen soon
enough.

The five foolish virgins called to the bridgegroom to let them in and
he said "I know you not". They were not like him.

When I read this parable, several thoughts come to mind, but the most

get another person into heaven except, tell them the way.

John 20:11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept,
she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the
other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them,
Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus
standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She,
supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him
hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him,
Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my
Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and
your Father; and to my God, and your God.

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord,
and that he had spoken these things unto her.

19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the
doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came
Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Here is my summary of the sermon on sunday. I hope it blesses you all.

Romans 8:28-39
Submit your life to God.

Characteristics of His plan for us:
1) The best plan for us. Works for good of those who love Him.
Promises to prosper and not to harm us. Promises to conform us to
His image, to make our heart like Jesus. What you hunger in your
heart for, what I made you to be.

2) continually working in us for our destiny.
Its a continuous process. He is working even when we can't see it,
behind the scenes.

3) All inclusive plan - He works in ALL things.
All things even the most minute things. Like the little sparrow, He
cares about all, even the insignificant. He also wants us to submit
all to
Him, even the insignificant.

4) God works all things together, interwoven, weaves them together.
He takes good and bad and weaves them all. We can't really see the
result but when He turns over the tapestry then we can see the
beautiful pattern.
Then we realize that He worked it all together to form His destined
plan in our lives.

When you bake a cake, some ingredients when eaten alone, like lemon
juice are bitter, but when all are put together into a cake, its
perfect.

All things that happen to us are not pleasant but He uses them to our
good.

"How beautiful on the mountain are whose whose feet bring good
tidings."

One of the boys in my church, grew up and is now a senior in Bible
college. He preached the message sunday night. It was very good so I
thought that I would share it briefly.

He was speaking on Matthew 16:13-23.

When Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
He got the worldly answer. What the world thought he was.
"Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others,
Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

Then he asked "Who do you say I am?"
Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus was pleased with Peter.
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not
revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that
you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates
of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom
of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and
whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

But Peter still didn't really know who Jesus was. Peter was still
thinking
in worldy terms. Peter was thinking that Jesus was the King who would
save all the people from the oppression of the world. Only a few
verses
later, after Jesus starts explaining that He will have to die, and
Peter
says: "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" and
Jesus responds with "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to
me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
We all have a lot to learn still.

The sermon ended with a question to us all:
"Who do you say I am?"

One is used daily to hep folk decide,
No! It isn't the Bible,
it's the TV Guide

As pages are turned, what shall they see?
Oh, what does it matter, turn on the TV.
Then confusion reigns, they all can't agree
on what they shall watch on the old TV

So they open the book in which they confide,
(No, not the Bible, but the TV Guide)
The Word of God is seldom read
Maybe a verse e'er they fall into bed
Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be,
Not from reading the Bible; from watching TV

So, then back to the table, side by side
are the Holy Bible and the TV guide
No time for prayer, no time for the Word
the plan of salvation is seldom heard
Forgiveness of sin so full and free
is found in the Bible, not on TV.

John Greenleaf Whittier

(1807-1892)
The Quaker Poet & Abolitionist
by Howard W Curtis

John Greenleaf Whittier was born on December 17, 1807 in the southwest
Parlor of the Whittier Homestead. He was the first son and second child of
John and Abigail (Hussey) Whittier. He grew up on the farm in a household
with his parents, a brother and two sisters, a maternal aunt and paternal
uncle, and a constant flow of visitors and hired hands for the farm.

He attended the local school just up the hill and spent two semesters in
the new Haverhill Academy. He was introduced by a teacher to the poetry of
Robert burns, and began to versify. His first poem to be seen in print
appeared in 12826 in the Newburyport Free Press, where the abolitionist
William Lloyd Garrison was editor. Under Garrison's encouragement Whittier
actively joined in the abolitionist cause and edited newspapers in Boston
and Hartford, and was associated with the Atlantic Monthly Magazine from
1857 until death.

In 1831, he brought out a book of prose works, Legends of New England and
the next year returned to his native town to run the farm after his
father's death. In 1836, he moved to Amesbury. Until the Civil War he
became increasingly involved in the abolitionist cause, serving in numerous
capacities on the local, state and national levels. He was also involved in
the formation of the Republican Party.

With the publication of Snow-Bound in 1866, Whittier finally enjoyed a
relatively comfortable life from the profits of his published works. It is
Snow-Bound for which he will always be best remembered as a poet. Nearly
every volume of his verses published thereafter was truly a best seller.
Whittier died on September 7, 1892 at a friend's home in Hampton Falls, NH,
and was buried with the rest of his family in Amesbury.

His popularity continued into the next century, but has suffered since, as
have most of the 19th century "Fireside Poet," but he is now being
recognized anew for his abolitionist work, encouragement of female poets
and writers and those poems of his which are truly great ones.
10.257WHY CALVARY IS BEAUTIFULPAULKM::WEISSI will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever...Fri Aug 30 1996 09:5419
From: "The [Nazarene] Preacher's Magazine,"
October 1929, Edited by J. B. Chapman

If there is one scene that sensitive hearts should shrink from, it is the
awful scene of crucifixion. We never could have endured to look on Calvary,
and yet it is Calvary that we commemorate. Is not that strange? A story I
heard the other Sunday will explain it. There was a lady who was very
beautiful -- all excepting her hands, which were misshapen and marred. And
for many a long day her little daughter had wondered what was the meaning of
those repulsive hands. At last she said to her, "Mother, I love your face,
and I love your eyes and your hair, they are so beautiful. But I cannot love
your hands, they are so ugly." And then the mother told her about her hands:
how ten years ago the house had taken fire, and how the nursery upstairs was
in a blaze, and how she had rushed to the cradle and snatched the baby from
it, and how her hands from that hour had been destroyed. And the baby saved
was her little listening daughter. And the daughter kissed the shapeless
hands (that she used to shrink from, before she knew their story) and she
said, "Mother, I love your face and your eyes and your hair; but I love your
hands now best of all." -- G. H. MORRISON

I find it strange that the topic of Quakers was talked about just last

exact conversation, but the meat of the words and thoughts were;

They are Quaking because the are aware of the presence of God,

and they are also quaking because they are keeping this knowledge
inside, in silence to the world.

10.307ONE GOD, ONE SALVATIONJULIET::MORALES_NASweet Spirit's Gentle BreezeTue Jan 28 1997 11:4324
Last evening while on the internet in a Global Christian Network chat
room a man came in asking about God. He asked if God was an essence
that could be found in everyone's belief systems.

I decided to do a check online and used the criteria God&Jealous, I
came up with 15 different verses which referred to God's jealousy over
his people. But this one verse just captured my heart:

2Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I
have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste
virgin to Christ.

While in today's world we would love to extend valuing differences to
include worldwide salvation, the truth is that all gods are not the
same god. There is only one God by which salvation can be obtained
based on Biblical authority.

Phil 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name
which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under
the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

RE: 10.307 AMEN.

True Christianity is not a religion, it is LIFE to them that
believe.

Amen again. It is this exclusivity of Christ that makes Christianity
unpalatable to today's tolerant society.

re:.308

A good brother in the Lord remarked recently "The only thing you should do
religiously is change your oil."

Always check your blinker fluid too. Bad things happen when it's too
low.
