How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good
news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim
	salvation.
		-- Isaiah 52:7, NIV

God says that the feet of those who bring good news are "beautiful." It
is a wonderful privilege to be able to share God's Good News with
others, his news of redemption, salvation, and peace.

To whom are you going -- with beautiful feet -- to give the Good News?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Listen! In this man Jesus, there is forgiveness for your sins.
Everyone who trusts in him is freed from all guilt.
		-- Acts 13:38-39, TLB

This is the Good News of the gospel: that forgiveness of sins and
freedom from guilt are available through faith in Christ to all people
-- including *you*. Have you received this forgiveness? Are you
    refreshed by it each day?

When guilt plagues you, remember the forgiveness Jesus brings.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Salt is good: but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you
season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one
	another."
		-- Mark 9:50, NRSV

Jesus used salt to illustrate three qualities that should be found in
his people: (1) *We should remember God's faithfulness*, just as salt
when used with a sacrifice recalled God's covenant with his people.
    (2) *We should make a difference in the "flavor" of the world we live
in*, just as salt changes meat's flavor. (3) *We should counteract the
moral decay in society*, just as salt preserves food from decay. When
we lose this desire to "salt" the earth with the love and message of
God, we become useless to him.

Don't lose your flavor! Remember God's faithfulness, and live for
    Christ.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your
	works are wonderful.
		-- Psalm 139:14, NIV

God's character goes into the creation of every person. When you feel
worthless or even begin to hate yourself, remember that God's Spirit is
ready and willing to work within you. We should have as much respect
for ourselves as our Maker has for us.

Thank God for his marvelous creation of your unique person.

My sheep hear my voice... I give them eternal life, and they will
never perish. No on will snatch them out of my hand.
		-- John 10:27-28, NRSV

Just as a shepherd protects his sheep, Jesus protects his people from
eternal harm. While believers can expect to suffer on earth, Satan
cannot harm their souls or take away their eternal life with God.
There are many reasons to be afraid here on earth because this is the
devil's domain. But if you choose to follow Jesus, he will give you
    everlasting safety.

Nothing can take away your eternal life with God.

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called
children of God; and that is what we are.
		-- 1 John 3:1, NRSV

As believers, our self-worth is based on the fact that God loves us and
calls us his children. We are his children *now*, not just sometime in
the distant future. Knowing that we are his children should encourage
us to live as Jesus did.

Celebrate your status as a loved child of God!

Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth
nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.
		-- Matthew 6:20, NRSV

Storing up treasures in heaven is not limited to tithing but is
accomplished by all acts of obedience to God. There is a sense in
which giving our money to God's work is like investing in heaven. But
our intention should be to seek the fulfillment of God's purposes in
all we do, not merely in what we do with our money.

Your acts of obedience store up treasures in heaven for you!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Repent and be baptized ... in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the
	Holy Spirit."
		-- Acts 2:38, NIV

If you want to follow Christ, you must "repent and be baptized." To
repent means to *turn from* sin, changing the direction of your life
from selfishness and rebellion against God's laws. At the same time,
you must *turn to* Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, mercy,
guidance, and purpose. We cannot save ourselves -- only God can save
us. Baptism identifies us with Christ and with the community of
believers. It is a condition of discipleship and a sign of faith.

If you haven't already made a decision, change the direction of your
life -- "in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith; test
yourself. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you?
		-- 2 Corinthians 13:5, NIV

The Corinthians were called to examine and test themselves to see if
they really were Christians. Just as we get physical check-ups, Paul
urges us to give ourselves spiritual checkups. We should look for a
growing awareness of Christ's presence and power in our lives. Only
then will we know if we are true Christians or merely impostors. If
we're not taking active steps to grow closer to God, we are drawing
    further away from him.

Do a self-check. Do your actions show that you are drawing close to
    the Lord?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your
whole body will be full of light."
		-- Matthew 6:22, NRSV

Spiritual vision is our capacity to see clearly what God wants us to do
and to see the world from his point of view. But this spiritual
insight can easily be clouded. Self-serving desires, interests, and
goals block that vision. Serving God is the best way to restore it. A
healthy eye is one that is fixed on God.

Illuminate the shadows of your spiritual vision by focusing on Christ.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ
	Jesus.
		-- Romans 8:1, NIV

"Not guilty; let him go free" -- what would those words mean to you if
you were on death row? The fact is that the whole human race *is* on
death row, justly condemned for repeatedly breaking God's holy law.
Without Jesus we would have no hope at all. But thank God! He has
declared us not guilty and has offered us freedom from sin and power to
    do his will.

Through Christ's sacrifice, you've been declared "not guilty." Enjoy
    the freedom to live!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The
statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the
commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
		-- Psalm 19:7-8, KJV

When we think of the law, we often think of something that keeps us
from having fun. But here we see the opposite -- law that revives us,
makes us wise, gives joy to the heart, gives light to the eyes, warns
us, and rewards us. That's because God's laws are guidelines and
lights for our path, rather than chains on our hands and feet. They
point at danger and warn us, then point at success and guide us.

Dig deep into God's Word, your source of wisdom, joy, and light.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because sentence against an evil deed is not executed immediately,
the human heart is fully set to do evil.
		-- Ecclesiastes 8:11, NRSV

If God doesn't punish us immediately, we must not assume that he
doesn't care or that sin has no consequences, even though it is easy to
sin when we don't feel the consequences right away. When a young child
does something wrong, and the wrong is not discovered, it will be much
easier for the child to repeat the act. But God knows every wrong we
commit, and one day we will have to answer for all that we have done.

Before you make choices about activities and attitudes, remember that
you will have to answer to God.

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under
heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
		-- Acts 4:12, NIV

Many people react negatively to the fact that there is no other name
than that of Jesus to call on for salvation. Yet this is not something
the church decided; it is the specific teaching of Jesus himself. If
God designated Jesus to be the Savior of the world, no one else can be
his equal. Christians are to be open-minded on many issues, but not on
how we are saved from sin. No other religious teacher could die for
    our sins; no other religious teacher came to earth as God's only Son;
no other religious teacher rose from the dead.

Jesus is the focal point of salvation -- there is no other name or way!

For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from
	observing the law.
		-- Romans 3:28, NIV

Most religions prescribe specific duties that must be performed to make
a person acceptable to a god. Christianity is unique in teaching that
the good deeds we do will not make us right with God. No amount of
human achievement or progress in personal development will close the
gap between God's moral perfection and our imperfect daily performance.
Good deeds are important, but they will not earn us eternal life. We
are saved only by trusting in what God has done for us.

Nothing you do can earn your place in God's family -- only trust in
    Christ.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fear of man is a dangerous trap, but to trust in God means safety.
		-- Proverbs 29:25, TLB

Fear of people can hamper everything you try to do. In extreme forms,
it can make you afraid to leave your home. By contrast, fear of God --
respect, reverence, and trust -- is liberating. Why fear people who
can do no eternal harm? Instead, fear God who can turn the harm
intended by others into good for those who trust him.

Do you fear man or God?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I give you this instruction ... so that by following them you may
fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience.
		-- 1 Timothy 1:18-19, NIV

How can you hold on to a good conscience? Treasure your faith in Christ
more than anything else and do what you know is right. Each time you
deliberately ignore your conscience, you are hardening your heart.
Over a period of time your capacity to tell right from wrong will
diminish. As you walk with God, he will speak to you through your
conscience, letting you know the difference between right and wrong.
Be sure to act on those inner tugs so that you can do what is right --
then your conscience will remain clear.

Keep your conscience clear by paying attention to it!

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath
sent me, even so I send you.
		-- John 20:21, KJV

Jesus again identified himself with his Father. He told the
disciples by whose authority he did his work. Then he passed the job
to his disciples of spreading the gospel of salvation around the
world. Whatever God has asked you to do, remember: your authority
comes from God, and Jesus has demonstrated by words and actions how
to accomplish the job he has given you. As the Father sent Jesus,
Jesus sends his followers... and you.

As God the Father sent Jesus, Jesus sends you.

This is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his
Son Jesus Christ, and do those things that are pleasing in his
	sight.
		-- 1 John 3:23, KJV

In the Bible, a person's name stands for his or her character. It
represents who he or she really is. We are to believe not only in
Jesus' words, but also in his very person as the Son of God. Moreover,
to believe "in the name" means to pattern your life after Christ's, to
become more like him by uniting yourself with him.

This is a twofold command: believe and obey!

We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty.
		-- Job 37:23, TLB

God is in control -- he directs, preserves, and maintains his created
order. Although we can't see it, God is divinely governing the moral
and political affairs of people as well. By spending time observing
the majestic and intricate parts of God's creation, we can be reminded
of his power in every aspect of our lives.

Remember God's power today by noticing the majesty and intricacy of
    God's creation!

A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up
	the bones.
		-- Proverbs 17:22, NRSV

To be cheerful is to be ready to greet others with a welcome, a word
of encouragement, an enthusiasm for the task at hand, and a positive
outlook on the future. Such people are as welcome as pain-relieving
    medicine.

Your cheerful spirit is good medicine -- for you and others!

I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard
	my cry.
		-- Psalm 40:1, KJV

Waiting for God to help us is not easy, but David received four
benefits from waiting: God lifted him out of his despair, set his feet
on a rock, gave him a firm place to stand, and put a new song of praise
in his mouth. Often blessings cannot be received unless we go through
    the trial of waiting.

Are you waiting on the Lord? Be sure that he hears your cries!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an
eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
		-- 2 Corinthians 4:17, NIV

Our troubles should not diminish our faith and disillusion us. We
should realize that there is a purpose in our suffering. Problems and
human limitations have several benefits: (1) they remind us of Christ's
suffering for us; (2) they keep us from pride; (3) they cause us to
look beyond this brief life; (4) they prove our faith to others; and
    (5) they give God the opportunity to demonstrate his power.

See your troubles as opportunities -- God's plans for you are always
    good.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you,
I will make my known my words unto you.
		-- Proverbs 1:23, KJV

God is more than willing to pour out his heart and make known his
thoughts to us. To receive his advice, we must be willing to listen,
refusing to let pride stand in our way. Pride is thinking more highly
of our own wisdom and desires than of God's. If we think we know
better than God or feel we have no need of God's direction, we have
fallen into foolish and disastrous pride.

Obey God's commands to come and listen. Spend time in his Word.

The steps of good men are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in
	his way.
		-- Psalm 37:23, KJV

The person in whom God delights is one who follows God, trusts him, and
tries to do his will. God watches over and makes firm every step that
person takes. If you would like to have God direct your way, then seek
his advice before you step out.

Do all of your steps come under the direction of the Lord?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on,
however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those
who have been trained by it.
		-- Hebrews 12:11, NIV

We may respond to discipline in several ways: (1) we can accept it with
resignation; (2) we can accept it with self-pity, thinking we really
don't deserve it; (3) we can be angry and resentful toward God; or (4)
we can accept it gratefully, as the appropriate response we owe a
    loving Father.

Accept God's discipline and expect a harvest of righteousness and
    peace.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night
left its place in front of the people.
		-- Exodus 13:22, NRSV

God gave the Hebrews a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire so they
would know day and night that God was with them on their journey to the
promised land. What has God given us so that we can have the same
assurance? The Bible -- something the Israelites did not have. Look to
God's Word for reassurance of his presence. As the Hebrews looked to
the pillars of cloud and fire, we can look to God's Word day and night
to know he is with us, helping us on our journey.

In your day-to-day journey, look to God's Word for guidance.

He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a
baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
		-- Luke 3:3, NRSV

Repentance has two sides -- turning away from sins and turning toward
God. To be truly repentant, we must do both. We can't just say we
believe and then live any way we choose, and neither can we simply live
a morally correct life without a personal relationship with God,
because that cannot bring forgiveness of sin. Determine to rid your
life of any sins God points out, and put your trust in him alone to
    guide you.

Turn away from anything that keeps you from turning toward God.

Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but
let him glorify God on this behalf.
		-- 1 Peter 4:16, KJV

It is not shameful to suffer for being a Christian. When Peter and
John were persecuted for preaching the Good News, they rejoiced
because such persecution was a mark of God's approval of their work
(Acts 5:41). Don't seek out suffering, and don't try to avoid it.
Instead, keep on doing what is right regardless of the suffering it
    might bring.

Keep on living for Christ, no matter what happens.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the
earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it
	bears much fruit.
		-- John 12:24, NRSV

This is a beautiful picture of the necessary sacrifice of Jesus.
Unless a kernel of wheat is buried in the ground, it will not become a
blade of wheat producing many more seeds. Jesus had to die to pay the
penalty for our sin, but also to show his power over death. His
resurrection proves he has eternal life. Because Jesus is God, Jesus
can give this same eternal life to all who believe in him.

Jesus' death provides life for all Christians.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the
right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly
	things.
		-- Colossians 3:1-2, NIV

Setting our hearts on things above means striving to put heaven's
priorities into daily practice. Setting our minds on things above
means concentrating on the eternal rather than the temporal.

Don't become too attached to what is only temporary.

He that endureth to the end shall be saved.
		-- Matthew 10:22, KJV

Standing firm to the end is not a way to be saved but the evidence that
a person is really committed to Jesus. Persistence is not a means to
earn salvation; it is the by-product of a truly devoted life.

When the going gets rough, stick with your commitment to God.

But will God really live upon the earth with men? Why, even the
heaven of heavens cannot contain you -- how much less the Temple
	which I have built!
		-- 2 Chronicles 6:18, TLB

Solomon marveled that the temple could contain the power of God and
that God would be willing to live on earth among sinful people. We
marvel that God, through his Son, Jesus, lived among us in human form
to reveal his eternal purposes to us. In doing so, God was reaching
out to us in love. God wants us to reach out to him in return in order
to know him and to love him with all our hearts.

Don't simply marvel at God's power; take time to get to know him.

We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us -- and we
ought to lay down our lives for one another.
		-- 1 John 3:16, NRSV

Real love is an action, not a feeling. It produces selfless,
sacrificial giving. The greatest act of love is giving oneself for
others. How can we lay down our lives? By serving others with no
thought of receiving anything in return. Sometimes it is easier to
say we'll die for others than to truly live for them -- this involves
    putting others' desires first.

To practice real love in action, practice selfless serving.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his
good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
		-- James 3:13, NIV

Have you ever known anyone who claimed to be wise but who acted
foolishly? True wisdom can be measured by the depth of a person's
character. Just as you can identify a tree by the type of fruit it
produces, you can evaluate your wisdom by the way you act.
Foolishness leads to disorder, but wisdom leads to peace and
    goodness.

True wisdom is measured by the depth of your character.

I am the Lord your God, who teaches you for your own good, who
leads you in the way you should go.
		-- Isaiah 48:17, NRSV

Like a loving parent, God teaches us and directs us. We should listen
to him because peace and righteousness come to us as we obey his Word.
Refusing to pay attention to God's commands invites punishment and
    threatens that peace and righteousness.

Respect God's guidance as your loving and wise Father.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn from all known sin and spend your time in doing good. Try to
live in peace with everyone; work hard at it.
		-- Psalm 34:14, TLB

Somehow we think that peace should come to us with no effort. But
David explained that we are to seek and pursue peace. A person who
wants peace cannot be argumentative and contentious. Because peaceful
relationships come from our efforts at peacemaking, work hard at living
in peace with others each day.

Are you involved in a fractured relationship? Work hard to make peace.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

But the Gateway to Life is small, and the road is narrow, and only
	a few ever find it.
		-- Matthew 7:14, TLB

The gate that leads to eternal life is called "narrow." This does not
mean that it is difficult to become a Christian, but that there is only
*one* way to live eternally with God and only a few that decide to walk
that road. Believing in Jesus is the only way to heaven, because he
alone died for our sins and made us right before God. Living his way
may not be popular, but it is true and right. Thank God there is one
    way!

If you have not already found "the Gateway to Life," turn to God today!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave
it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."
		-- Matthew 26:26, NRSV

Each name we use for this sacrament brings out a different dimension.
It is the Lord's Supper because it commemorates the Passover meal
Jesus ate with his disciples; it is the Eucharist (thanksgiving)
because in it we thank God for Christ's work for us; it is Communion
because through it we commune with God and with other believers. As
we partake, we should recall Jesus' death and his promise to come
again, be grateful for God's wonderful gift to us, and be joyful as
we meet with Christ and the body of believers.

In Communion, Christians celebrate their deliverance, through Christ,
    from sin and death.

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is in the
Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its
	roots by the stream.
		-- Jeremiah 17:7-8, NRSV

Those who trust in the Lord flourish like trees planted by water.
Those who trust in the Lord will have abundant strength, not only for
their own needs, but even for the needs of others. Are you satisfied
with being unfruitful, or do you, like a well-watered tree, have
strength for the time of crisis and even some to share as you bear
    fruit for the Lord?

Let your roots drink in the comfort and power of the Holy Spirit.

Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
		-- Deuteronomy 5:7, KJV

A *god* is whatever people put first in their lives. Some people
literally worship other gods by joining cults or other strange
religions. In a more subtle way, many of us worship other gods by
building our lives around something other than the one true God. If
your greatest desire is for popularity, power, or money, you are
devoting yourself to something other than God.

What is the "chief god" that rivals God's place in your desires?

There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING
	OF THE JEWS.
		-- Luke 23:38, NRSV

This sign was meant to be ironic. A king, stripped and executed in
public view, had obviously lost his kingdom forever. But Jesus, who
turns the world's wisdom upside down, was just coming into his kingdom.
His death and resurrection would strike the deathblow to Satan's rule
and would establish Christ's eternal authority over the earth. Few
people reading the sign that bleak afternoon understood its real
meaning, but the sign was absolutely true.

Jesus is the King of the Jews -- and the Gentiles, and the whole
    universe, and you.

But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for
sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God."
		-- Hebrews 10:12, NRSV

Beware of anyone who tells you that Christ's sacrifice still leaves you
incomplete or that something else is needed to make you acceptable to
God. When we believe in Christ, he makes us completely right with God.
Our loving relationship leads us to follow him in willing obedience and
service. He is pleased with our service, but we cannot be saved by our
    good deeds.

Remember that Christ's sacrifice paid for your sins once and for all.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is
	risen.
		-- Luke 24:5-6, KJV

The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the central fact of
Christian history. On it, the church is built; without it, there would
be no Christian church today. Jesus' resurrection is unique. Other
religions have strong ethical systems, concepts about paradise and
afterlife, and various holy Scriptures. Only Christianity has a God
who became human, literally died for his people, and was raised again
in power and glory to rule his church forever.

Christ the Lord is risen. Alleluia!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death
hath no more dominion over him.
		-- Romans 6:9, KJV

Because of Christ's death and resurrection, his followers need never
fear death. That assurance frees us to enjoy fellowship with him and
to do his will. This will affect all our activities -- work and
worship, play, Bible study, quiet times, and times of caring for
others. When you know that you don't have to fear death, you will
experience a new vigor in life.

Because you belong to Christ, death has no power over you.

		-- Isaiah 42:3, TLB

When you feel broken and bruised or burned out in your spiritual life,
God won't step on you or toss you aside as useless, but will gently
pick you up. God's loving attributes are desperately needed in the
world today. Through God's Spirit, we can show such sensitivity to

The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his
life as a ransom for many.
		-- Matthew 20:28, NRSV

A ransom was the price paid to release a slave from bondage. Jesus
often told his disciples that he must die, but here he told them why --
to redeem all people from the bondage of sin and death. The disciples
thought that as long as Jesus was alive, he could save them. But Jesus
revealed that only his death would save them and the world.

To ransom you from the captors of sin and death, Jesus paid the highest
    price -- his own life.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
		-- Matthew 23:11, KJV

Jesus challenged society's norms. To him, greatness comes from serving
-- giving of yourself to help God and others. Service keeps us aware
of others' needs, and it stops us from focusing only on ourselves.
Jesus came as a servant. What kind of greatness do *you* seek?

Remember that God honors your loving service.

Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
		-- 2 Timothy 2:1, NIV

How can someone be strong in grace? Grace means undeserved favor. Just
as we are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8,9) we should live by grace
(Colossians 2:6). This means trusting completely in Christ and *his*
power, and not trying to live for Christ in our strength alone.

Receive and utilize Christ's power -- he will give you the strength to
    do his work.

Desire without knowledge is not good, and one who moves too
	hurriedly misses the way.
		-- Proverbs 19:2, NRSV

We often move hastily through life, rushing headlong into the unknown.
Many people marry without knowing what to expect of their partner or of
married life. Others try drugs or illicit sex without considering the
consequences. Some plunge into jobs without evaluating whether they
are suitable to that line of work. Don't rush into the unknown. Be
sure you understand what you're getting into and where you want to go
before you take the first step. And if it still seems unknown, be sure
    you are following God.

Take time in your decision making, and do your best to follow God's
    way.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in
Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory
	of God.
		-- 2 Corinthians 1:20, NIV

All of God's promises of what the Messiah would be like are fulfilled
in Christ ("in him it has always been 'Yes'"). Jesus was completely
    faithful in his ministry; he never sinned; he faithfully died for us;
and now he faithfully intercedes for us. Because Jesus Christ is
faithful, Paul wanted to be faithful in his ministry.

God keeps his word -- through Christ -- so say "Amen!"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness
on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world.
		-- 1 John 4:17, NRSV

The day of judgment is that time when all people will appear before
Christ and be held accountable for their actions. With God living in
us through Christ, we have no reason to fear this day because we have
been saved from punishment. Instead, we can look forward to the day of
judgment, because it will mean the end of sin and the beginning of a
    face-to-face relationship with Jesus Christ.

Now and when the day of judgment comes, we are covered by the
    righteousness and perfection of Christ.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female,

		-- Galatians 3:28, NIV

It's our natural inclination to feel uncomfortable around people who
are different from us and to gravitate toward those who are similar to
us. But when we allow our differences to separate us from our fellow
believers, we are disregarding clear Biblical teaching. Make a point

I am your servant: therefore give me common sense to apply your
	rules to everything I do.
		-- Psalm 119:125, TLB

The psalmist asked God for discernment. Faith comes alive when we
apply Scripture to our daily tasks and concerns. We need discernment
so we can understand, and we need the desire to apply Scripture where
we need help. The Bible is like medicine -- it goes to work only when
we apply it to the affected areas. As you read the Bible, be alert for

Once you were less than nothing; now you are God's own.
		-- 1 Peter 2:10, TLB

People often base their self-concept on their accomplishments. But
our relationship with Christ is far more important than our jobs,
successes, wealth, or knowledge. We have been chosen by God as his
very own, and we have been called to represent him to others.
Remember that your value comes from being one of God's children, not
from what you can achieve. You have worth because of what God does,
not because of what you do.

But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through
death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free
	from accusation.
		-- Colossians 1:22, NIV

The way to be free from sin is to trust Jesus Christ to take it away.
We must remain firm in the truth of the gospel, putting our confidence
in Jesus alone to forgive our sins, to make us right with God, and to
empower us to live the way he desires. When a judge in a court of law
declares the defendant not guilty, the person has been acquitted of all
charges. Legally, it is as if he or she had never been accused. When
God forgives our sins, our record is wiped clean. From his
perspective, it is as though we had never sinned.

No matter what you have done or what you have been like, God's

Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of
	heaven is at hand.
		Matthew 4:17, KJV

Jesus started his ministry with the very word people had heard John the
Baptist say: "Repent." The message is the same today as when Jesus and
John gave it. Becoming a follower of Christ means turning away from
our self-centeredness and "self" control and turning our lives over to
    Christ's direction and control.

Remember that God's kingdom is at hand.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my
	lips.
		-- Psalm 141:3, NIV

On the average, a person opens his or her mouth approximately 700 times
a day to speak. David wisely asked God to help keep him from speaking
evil -- sometimes even as he underwent persecution. Jesus himself was
silent before his accuser. Knowing the power of the tongue, we would
do well to ask God to guard what we say so that our words will bring
    honor to his name.

Pray for God's help in controlling all you say.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those who love your laws have great peace of heart and mind and do
	not stumble.
		-- Psalm 119:165, TLB

Modern society longs for peace of mind. Here is clear-cut instruction
on how to attain this: if we love God and obey his laws, we will have
"great peace." Trust in God, who alone stands above the pressures of
daily life and gives us full assurance.

Do you long for peace of mind? The key is obeying God's commands.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into the
	holy temple in the Lord.
		-- Ephesians 2:21, NRSV

A church building is sometimes called God's house. In reality, God's
household is not a building, but a group of people. He lives in us and
shows himself to a watching world through us. People can see that God
is love and that Christ is Lord as we live in harmony with each other
and in accordance with what God says in his Word. We are citizens of
God's kingdom and members of his household.

		-- John 1:12, NRSV

All who welcome Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives are reborn
spiritually, receiving new life from God. Through faith in Christ,
this new birth changes us from the inside out -- rearranging our
attitudes, desires, and motives. Being born makes you physically alive

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be

		-- 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, NIV

As the Corinthians awaited Paul's next visit, they were directed to (1)
be on their guard against spiritual dangers, (2) stand firm in the
faith, (3) behave courageously, (4) be strong, and (5) do everything

Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.
		-- Psalm 34:9, NIV

You say you belong to the Lord, but do you fear him? To fear the Lord
means to show deep respect and honor to him. We demonstrate true
reverence by our humble attitude and genuine worship. This is not a
blanket promise that all Christians will have everything they want.
Instead, this is David's praise for God's goodness -- all those who
call upon God in their need will be answered, sometimes in unexpected
    ways.

Remember, God knows what you need, and he knows the best timing for
    giving it to you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life
	through Christ Jesus our Lord.
		-- Romans 6:23, KJV

Eternal life is a free gift from God. If it is a gift, then it is not
something that we earn, nor something that must be paid back. Consider
the foolishness of someone who receives a gift given out of love and
then offers to pay for it. A gift cannot be purchased by the
recipient. A more appropriate response to a loved one who offers a
gift is graceful acceptance with gratitude. He saved us because of his
mercy, not because of any righteous things that we have done.

Your salvation is a gift from God, not something of your own doing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

He reached down from heaven and took me and drew me out of my great
trials. He rescued me from deep waters.
		-- Psalm 18:16, TLB

Do your troubles, like "deep waters," threaten to drown you? When you
wish that God would quickly rescue you from your troubles, remember
that he can either deliver you or be your support as you go through
them. Either way, his protection is best for you. When you feel like
you're drowning in troubles, ask God to help you, hold you steady, and
protect you. In his care, you are never helpless.

What "deep waters" are you in right now? Call on God to rescue you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

For our God is a consuming fire.
		-- Hebrews 12:29, NIV

There is a big difference between the flame of a candle and the roaring
blast of a forest fire. Even with sophisticated fire-fighting
equipment, a consuming fire is often beyond human control. God is not
within our control either. We cannot force him to do anything for us
through our prayers. Yet, he is a God of compassion. He has saved us
from sin, and he will save us from death. But everything that is
worthless and sinful with be consumed by the fire of his wrath. Only
what is good, dedicated to God, and righteous will remain.

Worship the sovereign God who will only accept what is holy.

We love because he first loved us.
		-- 1 John 4:19, NRSV

God's love is the source of all human love, and it spreads like fire.
In loving his children, God kindles a flame in their hearts. In turn,
they love others, who are warmed by God's love through them.

When you find it difficult to love someone, ask God to fill you with
    his love for that person.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning
will I direct my prayer unto thee.
		-- Psalm 5:3, KJV

The secret of a close relationship with God is to pray to him earnestly
each morning. In the morning, our minds are more free from problems
and then we can commit the whole day to God. Regular communication
helps any friendship and is certainly necessary for a strong
relationship with God. We need to communicate with him daily.

Do you have a regular time to pray and read God's Word? Set aside time
    today.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well.
		-- Matthew 6:33, NIV

To "seek first his kingdom and his righteousness" means to turn to God
first for help, to fill your thoughts with his desires, to take his
character for your pattern, and to serve and obey him in everything.
People, objects, goals, and other desires all compete for priority.
Any of these can quickly bump God out of first place if you don't
actively choose to give him first place in *every* area of your life.

What is really important to you? Re-evaluate your priorities.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despise not the chastening of the Lord ... For whom the Lord
	loveth he correcteth.
		-- Proverbs 3:11-12, KJV

It's difficult to know when God has been disciplining us until we look
back on the situation later. Not every calamity comes directly from
God, of course. But if we rebel against God and refuse to repent when
God has identified some sin in our lives, he may use guilt, crises, or
bad experiences to bring us back to him. Sometimes, however, difficult
times come even when there is no flagrant sin in our lives. Then, our
response should be patience, integrity, and confidence that God will
    show us what to do.

Is God proving his love to you through discipline?

		-- Psalm 127:3, KJV

Too often children are seen as liabilities rather than assets. But the
Bible calls children a gift from God, a reward. We can learn valuable
lessons from their inquisitive minds and trusting spirits. Those who
view children as a distraction or nuisance should instead see them as
an opportunity to shape the future. We dare not treat children as an
inconvenience when God values them so highly.

Be thankful for the children in your life.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they
were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took
note that these men had been with Jesus.
		-- Acts 4:13, NIV

Knowing that Peter and John were unschooled, the council was amazed at
what being with Jesus had done for them. A changed life convinces
people of Christ's power. One of your greatest testimonies is the
difference others see in your life and attitudes since you have
    believed in Christ.

Be courageous in the power of the Holy Spirit, and the people around
you will know you have believed in Jesus.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Everything is possible for him who believes."
		-- Mark 9:23, NIV

Jesus' words do not mean that we can automatically obtain anything we
want if we just think positively. Jesus meant that anything is
*possible* if we believe, because nothing is too difficult for God. We
cannot have everything we pray for as if by magic; but with faith, we
can have everything we need to serve him.

With God's help, no task is too difficult for you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them.
		-- 1 Timothy 4:16, NIV

We know the importance of watching our lives closely. We must be on
constant guard against falling into sin that can so easily destroy us.
Yet we must watch what we believe ("doctrine") just as closely. Wrong
beliefs can quickly lead us into sin and heresy. We should be on guard
against those who would persuade us that how we live is more important
than what we believe. We should persevere in both.

Guard your life against both wrong behavior and wrong beliefs.

They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them
	singleness of heart and action.
		-- Jeremiah 32:38-39, NIV

God doesn't give you power to be all you want to be, but he gives you
power to be all *he* wants you to be. The people of Israel had to
learn that trusting God meant radically realigning their purposes and
desires toward him. God gave them "singleness of heart" toward him.
We must develop that singleness of heart and action to love God above
    anything else.

If you want to honor God, cultivate singleness of heart and action.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run away from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young
men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to
	do right.
		-- 2 Timothy 2:22, TLB

Running away is sometimes considered cowardly. But wise people realize
that removing themselves physically from temptation can often be the
most courageous action to take. Timothy, a young man, was warned to
flee anything that produced evil thoughts. Do you have a recurring
temptation that is difficult to resist? Remove yourself physically from
any situation that stimulates your desire to sin.

Knowing when to run is as important in spiritual battle as knowing when
    and how to fight.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some nations boast of armies and of weaponry, but our boast is in
	the Lord our God.
		-- Psalm 20:7, TLB

As long as there have been armies and weapons, nations have boasted of
their power, but such power does not last. Throughout history, empires
and kingdoms have risen to great power only to vanish in the dust.
David, however, knew that the true might of his nation was not in
weaponry but in worship; not in firepower but in God's power. Because
God alone can preserve a nation or an individual, be sure your
confidence is in God, who gives eternal victory.

In what power is your confidence? Trust in the God of victory.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your
	neighbor as yourself."
		-- Galatians 5:14, NIV

When we are not motivated by love, we become critical of others. We
stop looking for good in them and see only their faults. Soon the
unity of believers is broken. Have you talked behind someone's back?
Have you focused on others' shortcomings instead of their strengths?
Remind yourself of Jesus' command to love others as you love yourself.
When you begin to feel critical of someone, make a list of that
person's positive qualities. If there are problems that need to be
addressed, it is better to confront in love than to gossip.

Be as quick to overlook the shortcomings of others as you are to
    overlook your own.

		-- 1 Corinthians 14:33, NIV

In worship, everything must be done in harmony and with order. Even
when the gifts of the Holy Spirit are being exercised, there is no
excuse for disorder. When there is chaos, the church is not allowing
God to work among believers as he would like.

With God there is no confusion or chaos; let your times of worship be
    full of peace.

Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to the span of your
	life?
		-- Luke 12:25, NRSV

Jesus commands us not to worry. But how can we avoid it? Only faith
can free us from the anxiety caused by greed and covetousness. It is
good to work and plan responsibly; it is bad to dwell on all the ways
our planning could go wrong. Worry is pointless because it can't fill
any of our needs; worry is foolish because the Creator of the universe
loves us and knows what we need. He promises to meet all our real
needs, but not necessarily all our desires.

Effective witnessing saves people from God's judgment. We witness to
some through our compassion and kindness; to others we witness as if we
were snatching them from the eternal fire. We are to hate the sin, but
we must witness to and love the sinner. Unbelievers, no matter how

Our lives are sprinkled with both types of experiences, and both are
needed for us to grow spiritually. When good times come, thank God and
use your prosperity for him. When bad times come, don't resent them,

You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord

		-- Deuteronomy 5:11, NIV

We are familiar with the sin to be avoided in this commandment, that we
should not misuse the name of the Lord by saying it in an empty or
worthless way. But there is also a good work that is commanded: to use
God's name to praise him and ascribe to him glory. This is the
opposite of misusing his name. While you might be able to keep
yourself from swearing, how have you done at finding time to praise God

Be sure to honor God's name in your conversation.

You, the righteous God, look deep within the hearts of men and
examine all their motives and their thoughts.
		-- Psalm 7:9, TLB

Nothing is hidden from God -- this can be either terrifying or
comforting. Our thoughts are an open book to him. Because he knows
even our motives, we have no place to hide, no way to pretend we can
get away with sin. But that very knowledge also gives us great
comfort. We don't have to impress God or put up a false front.
Instead, we can trust God to help us work through our weaknesses in
order to serve him as he has planned. When we truly follow God, he
    rewards our efforts.

Does God's complete knowledge frighten or comfort you? Trust him to
    help you obey.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the

		-- Psalm 91:1, NIV

God is a shelter, a refuge when we are afraid. The writer's faith in
the Almighty God as Protector would carry him through all the dangers
and fears of life. This should be a picture of our trust -- trading
all our fears for faith in him, no matter how intense our fears. To do
this we must "dwell" and "rest" in him. By entrusting ourselves to his
protection and pledging our daily devotion to him, we will be kept
    safe.

When you place yourself under God's protection, you choose the safest
    place of all.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot

		-- Psalm 139:6-7, NRSV

God is omnipresent -- he is present everywhere. Because this is so,
you can never be lost to his Spirit. This is good news to those who

Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for

		-- 1 Peter 2:16, NIV

We are free from keeping the law as a way to earn salvation. However,
we are still to obey the teachings of the Ten Commandments out of
gratitude for our free salvation, for the Commandments are an
expression of God's will for us.

Within God's will, you are completely free.

We can make our plans, but the final outcome is in God's hands.
		-- Proverbs 16:1, TLB

In doing God's will, there must be partnership between our efforts and
God's control. He wants us to use our minds, to seek the advice of
others, and to plan. Nevertheless, the results are up to him.
Planning, then, helps us act God's way. As you live for him, ask for

Trust God for the outcome of the plans you're making now.

Never be afraid of dying -- Jesus promised abundant life, now and

help you grow stronger. When Jeremiah questioned God because of the
trouble he faced, God asked how he ever expected to face big challenges
if the little ones tired him out. Don't complain about your problems.
The trouble you face today is training you to be strong for the more

Believers, who wrote down His message for His people. Scripture

Almost any long trip requires a map or guide. As we travel through life,
the Bible should be our road map, pointing out safe routes, obstacles to
avoid, and our final destination. We must recognize ourselves as pilgrims,

For the L_RD grants wisdom! His every word is a trasure of
knowledege and understanding. --- Proverbs 2:6 TLB

Wisdom comes in two ways: it is a G_d-given gift and also the result of
an energetic search. Wisdom's starting point is G_d and His revealed
Word, the source of knowledge and understanding. In that sense, wisdom
is His gift to us. But He gives it only to those who earnestly seek it.
But because G_d's wisdom is hidden from the rebellious and foolish, it
takes effort to find it and use it. The pathway to wisdom is strenuous.
When we are on the path, we discover that true wisdom is G_d's and that
He will guide us and reward our sincere and persistent search.

Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in
himself, without comparing himself to somebody else. --- Gal 6:4 NIV

When you do your very best, you feel good about the results. There is no
need to compare yourself with others. People make comparisons for many
reasons. Some point out others' flaws in order to feel better about

For who has known the mind of the L_rd that He may instruct Him?
But we have the mind of Christ. --- 1 Corinthians 2:16 NIV

No one can comprehend G_d, but thorugh the guidance of the Holy
Spirit, believers have insight into some of G_d's plans, thoughts,
and actions --- they, in fact, have the "mind of Christ." Through
the Holy Spirit, we can begin to know G_d's thoughts, talk with Him,
and expect His answers to our prayers. Are you spending enought time
with Christ to have His very mind in you? An intimate relationship
with Christ comes only from spending time consistently in His
  presence and in His Word.

To have the mind of Christ, spend time in His presence and His Word.

This is the day which the L_RD hath made, we will rejoice and
be glad in it. --- Psalm 118:24 KJV

There are days when the last thing we want to do is rejoice. Our mood
is down, our situation is out of hand, and our sorrow or guilt is
overwhelming. we can relate to the writers of the psalms who often
felt this way. But no matter how low the psalmists felt, they were
always honest with G_d. And as they talked to G_od, their prayers
ended in praise. Whenyou don't feel like rejoicing, tell G_d how you
truly feel. You will find that G_d will give you areason to rejoice.
G_d has given you this day to live and to serve Him --- be glad!

Sanctify them by the turth; Your Word is truth. --- John 17:17 NIV

A follower of Christ becomes sanctified (set apart for sacred use,
cleansed and made holy) through believing and obeying the Word of
G_d. He or she has already accewpted forgiveness through Christ's
sacrificial death. But early application of G_d's Word has a
purifying effect on our minds and hearts. Scripture points our sin,
motivates us to confess, renews our relationship with Christ, and
guides us back to the right path.

                          A P P L I C A T O N

Apply G_d's Word to you life, believing and obeying, and you will
  find yourself growing more Christ-like.

   The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life;
and he that winneth souls is wise. --- Proverbs 11:30 KJV

A wise person is a model of a meaningful life. Like a tree attracts people
to its shade, his or her sense of purpose attracts others who want to know
how they too can find meaning. Gaining wisdom yourself, then, can be the
first step in leading people to G_d. Leading people to G_d is important
because it keeps us in touch with G_d while offering others eternal life.

"Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened for you." --- Matthew 7:7 NRSV

Jesus tells us to persist in pursuing G_d. People often give up after a
few halfhearted efforts and conclude that G_d cannot be found. But knowing
G_d takes faith, focus and follow-through, and Jesus assures us that we
will be rewarded. Don't give up in your efforts to seek G_d. Continue to
ask Him for more knowledge, patience, wisdom, love, and understanding.
He will give them to you.

                                                 --- Romans 12:9 NRSV

Most of us have learned how to pretend to love others --- how to speak
kindly, avoid hurting their feelings, and appear to take an interest in
them. But G_d calls us to real and sincere love that goes far beyond
pretense and politeness. Sincere llove requires concentration and effort.

                                                   --- James 1:2-3 NRSV

We can't really know the depth of our character until we see how we react
under pressure. It is easy to be kind to others when everything is going
well, but can we still be kind when others are treating us unfairly? G_d
wants to make us mature and complete, not to keep us from all pain.
Instead of complaining about our struggles, we should see them as

What kind fo firend are you? There is a vast difference between knowing

The L_RD is slow to anger, but great in power, and the L_RD will by no
means clear the guilty. --- Nahum 1:3 NRSV

Often, people avoid G_d because they see evildoers in the world and
hypocrites in the church. They don't realize that because G_d is slow to
anger, He gives His true followers time to share His love and truth with
evildoers. But judgment *will* come; G_d will not allow sin to go unchecked
forever. When people wonder why G_d doesn't punish evil immediately, help
them remember that if He did, none of us would be here. We can all be
thankful that G_d gives people time to turn to Him.
