My sister in law is turning 40 this year.  Shhhh!  Don't tell her
but we're going to a local retirement home for an application to
fill out in her name for her to sign as part of her birthday card.
(Now, if you think I'm cruel, let me tell you that I'm only taking
someone else's ideas; the cruelty is in *using* the idea!)

    Well, as you get up here in years, there are a few things that stop
    working as well.  The first is your eyesight (I wear POWERFUL contact
    lenses).  Another is your reflexes -- those pinball saves are harder to
    come by.  And the third is, umm, the third is...ah, um...I can't

    Are you *really* 42????  I mean *really*... are you gray yet?  Do you
    have hair?  Can you still jump out of bed with ease?  Tell me is it
    true the older you get the larger your nose gets? [I'm concerned, cause
    mine's a honker already, just ask Mark, Jim, Dan, Leslie, Lisa,!]
    And something I've always wondered about older people... the older you
    get can you still ... naw, better not ask that question, I'll find out
    soon enough.... oh, I'll ask it anyway, if you go to sleep with
    vaseline on your face does it gets rid of all the wrinkles by in the
    morning?  :-) :-)

    This is *too* very funny.....
    
    I see Sandy, Markel and Markem... doing the wave trying to get out of
    their waterbeds [except I know Markem doesn't have a waterbed] or does
    he?  I saw it, but I didn't sit or get in it... hmmm [is that regular,
    regular looking bed filled with water?]

I had to trade my real waterbed in for a pseduo water bed - the kind that
look like regular beds but have these weenie tubes instead of a large,
baffled bladder.  Why?  My second floor is supported by 6" joists.
If I had regular (10"?) joists, it would hold the weight of a 
king sized waterbed, but we weren't so sure on the 6" joists.

Major bummer.  I miss that bed.

This pseudo-waterbed is about 1/3 the weight but not near as much fun.

Next house (if any) it goes and we go back to a king bed to sail again!

    Major bummer -- first birthday greeting series (mine, no less!) and
    it's already ratholed... ;-)
    
    Our waterbed (queen size) also looks like a regular bed, but has a
    single-bladder mattress.  It has a foam frame (foam, covered with
    vinyl) which I love, because you can sit on the edge, roll out of bed,
    etc. -- things that can be painful with a wooden frame.

WHY does everyone keep calling it - THE BIG 40?

    your right they should call it the "Lower 40" cause by the time you
    reach that age all your muscles tend to settle around the middle and
    low end. ;^)

The Big Four-Oh! is how it is pronounced in many circles.
I know what Phil (PDM) is saying.  I have a similar furniture
problem: my chest fell down in my drawers.

Forty isn't old, for a tree.  But, statistically, *I'm* closer to
"middle" at 33 than someone at the Big Four-Oh!

Now, these Baby Boomers want to make it chic to be forty-something.
It wasn't long ago when thirty-something was chic, which was when
they thought 40 was crisis time.  Not long before that it was "never
trust anyone over 30;" the flower-power, long-haired hippies!
"Keep us young! Keep us young!" they cry in their way, doing so by
continually redefining what "young" is.

Well, I'm nearing middle-age at 33.  Maybe I'm in advanced age, if
Jesus comes sooner than later.

I am soon to be the new father of a teenager (on the 7th).  I should get 
choclate cigars to pass out that say "It's a teen."  In seven and a half 
short years, my oldest daughter will be as old as I was when she was born.
I'll be forty one then.

Some of us know the value of time, and no matter how much we squeeze,
it goes faster and faster.  (Oops.  Sorry to wax serious here.)  Sigh.

Thanks for the birthday greetings, everyone.  When I got back from bible 
study last night, my daughters greeted me with confetti and banners 
wishing me a happy xx (insert appropriate age) birthday.  I even found a 
couple more taped to my windshield this morning. :^)


I really enjoyed the tapes, Lisa (I must have listened to the a dozen 
times) and will have them in the mail to you this weekend.  Mucho 
thanks and I hope you can manage to make it past the living room floor 
tonight.

    Thanks for all the Birthday wishes folks!  Every last one of 'em means
    something special to me.  On Saturday my friends came over for dinner,
    and then cake and icecream.  It was pleasant and wonderful.  
    
    But once again, without fail the Lord brought someone into my home that
    needed encouragement.  A woman who is 43 years old, suffers severely
    from MS, confessed to me that she had been abused as a young woman, as
    her sister had... so, I spent time testifying and praying with this
    woman and her husband.  It was a great way to thank the Lord for my
    birth!  
    
    I'm sitting here shaking my head in mere amazement at how the Lord
    works.

    Ok, folks, here's a tough one.  It is traditional in the business world
    that when a holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is taken
    off; and when the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is
    taken off.  However, to me, birthday greetings always look bad in
    retrospect.  (Maybe it's a carryover from all those years of having to
    buy Sorry-I-forgot-your-birthday cards.)  So, it is a natural tendency
    in me to say, if a birthday falls on the weekend, "celebrate" the
    Friday before.  What really makes it hard now, though, is that the day
    of celebration today is going to be shortened due to the conference
    move, and I wouldn't want anyone to feel slighted by having a shortened
    day of celebration.  Oh, what to do, what to do....

Interesting you should put it this way, Karen.  I have to fix a flipper
brace plate after Collis whomped on the machine on Saturday.  (It wasn't
his fault.  I had some metal fatigue already and had a stop-gap measure
in place.  He was lucky enough to "push it over the edge.")

So, High Speed is in the pits stop for repairs, and my plumber is not going
to be happy tonight, not being able to defend his title against Collis
"Tommy" Jackson.

I turn 37 today.  That's about the number of hairs left
on my head.  :-)

Indeed, Mark was kind enough to allow me to play High
Speed for a few hours on Saturday.  By the way, Mark, I
discovered that if you put all 3 balls in the hideout
when winning the jackpot, that it ejects only one
so you can keep playing.

My wife gave me the first set of Keith Green songs
(2 CD's).  I'm probably one of the few that can get
Keith Green songs and most all of them I've never heard
before.  Anyway, I'll hear them all now!

Tonight we start square dancing for the second year.  Robyn
is bringing a cake for everybody (and wearing her skirt
that she just finished after 6 months!), so it should be
a fun night.

Hey, I just found out that the general assembly okayed forms of
dancing except for those which are sexually suggestive!  So I'm behind
on the times.  (We avoided *all* dancing.)  I need to get an updated

call it dancing if we want to, but there's goes a good-natured joke.

 Today is my son Scott's 11th birthday.  I was thinking last night of
the day/night of his birth.  It was a pretty scary time, as he was
rather lethargic and quiet at birth, and the doctors and nurses present
immediately went to work on him and his mother went into a panic.  

Shortly after the doctors indicated they were concerned about the fact
that he was not eating and the pediatrician said he was "floppy" and that
he was thinking cerebral palsy.  The next 24 hours were probably the
longest of our lives.  I called my best friend, who was the youth pastor
at our church and he was there at the hospital within minutes and we 
prayed and prayed, and the prayer chain at the church was put in action.


Without going into all of the details, our prayers were answered and it
turned out that Scott was under the influence of a big dose of demoral that
my wife received just prior to his birth.  Somehow, the doctors in the 
delivery room were not aware of it (?) and once they had all got together
and compared notes, they figured it out.

So, Scott is fine now, celebrating his 11th birthday today.  I believe
God has a plan for him, as he does for all of, but I thank him and praise
Him for saving Scott that night.

    spot that aches within me.  I guess a longing that was never truly
    fulfilled by my own family.  It encourages me to keep on keeping on for

 Know what you mean.  I think right now my biggest concern is for
my kids, which is probably typical for most people, but for several
years they were not the top priority in my life.  Renewing my relationship
with Christ has changed all that.  Unfortunately, they have some catching
up to do, but are slowly coming along.

    The day started out great!  Cathey and Andrea had everything ready to
    prepare a lovely preakfast this morning when I came downstairs.  A
    couple of presents as well.  God surely has blessed me with such a
    wonderful wife and daughter.  Of course, not just today and for those
    reasons.  They are wonderful always!

Not being German I don't really know.  I celebrated my birthday very quietly
this year. Just like a normal Tuesday going to Prayer meeting and Bible study
at church.  They did sing "Happy Birthday" to me during the Bible study though!

    I was only 2 years old when my parents divorced.  My father not knowing
    what else to do, promptly took me to live with his mother and father in
    Kentucky.  You see, my mother didn't want me.  For 6 years, my
    grandparents gave me the only "home" I ever had.  However, what happened 
    during summer visitations in Florida (with my parents) was a nightmare.
    
    My parents both lived in Tampa, Florida.  During the summer, starting
    at 4 years of age, my grandmother would put me on a plane to my parents.  
    In Florida, my father would pick me up and off we would go to his den of
    darkness.  My father's abode had pornography on the walls and in the
    bathroom.  At night he would molest me when he thought I was asleep.
    
    During the day we didn't acknowledge anything had happened between us. 
    I was so young (I know it started before 4) that I didn't know any
    different.  I remember by age 6 asking my friends if there fathers 
    visited them in bed.  They would all look at me shocked, so my shame 
    would stop me from talking about this.
    
    At age 6, my father (who I now know was an alcoholic) liked to stop at
    the bars and drink.  So, my Father would leave me in the car and have
    barmaids come out and bring me a grape soda and take me in the bushes 
    to relieve myself.  At closing, he would amble out drunk and somehow 
    only God knows we made it home!
    
    During this time, Mom was busy with her beaus.  She had met the man of
    her dreams and was not interested in me.  I saw her on weekends sometimes,
    but not a lot.  I usually stayed with a neighbor or my older sister, if she
    was there.  My sister lived with my mother's parents.
    
    Then 2 years later, at 8 years old, I began another transition.  My
    mother was pregnant and decided she wanted me to live with her.  She got
    married and my little brother was born.
    
    Having a stepfather and 3 stepsisters was more then difficult for me. 
    My stepsisters, as well as our "new baby brother", all slept in the same
    room. I had one stepsister who didn't like me or my mother.  She physically
    and verbally abused me whenever I was left in her care.  She was 8 years
    older than me.  Her abuse along with the *other* abuse made me feel very
    insignificant.  I became an uncooperative child.  It felt as though my
    very soul had been taken from me.
    
    Because of the amount of alcohol and dysfunction in our home, my
    stepfather and mother had frequent violent, drunken fights.  Sometimes my
    stepfather would go in the closet, pull out the shotgun, and shoot 
    up the house!  God only knows why no-one ever got hit by a stray bullet.
    
    It is impossible to describe the total emptiness in my heart when as a
    little girl I listened to them fighting.  To liken it to a cold, dark,
    pit with no escape, touches the surface.
    
    To further worsen matters, a year later when I was 9, my father met a
    woman who had a daughter my age, whom she willingly turned over to my
    father's bed.  I now had competition for the only "constant" person in 
    my life, my father.  
    
    When I was with my mother, there was a lot of verbal abuse.  She also
    consumed her fair share of alcohol, which worsened things.  I was angry
    that my mother never "protected" me.  My father's house was full of
    pornography everywhere for everyone to see.  But at this time, she took
    me there, faithfully, every weekend and left me with him.  She never
    questioned what kind of environment I was in.
    
    Then, though no-one else, not my sister, not my mother, not my
    grandparents, no-one picked up on an overly sexual 10 year old, except
    my stepfather who took notice, and was now making nighttime visits to my
    bed.
    
    All of my stepsisters had married and the only other person in the room
    besides me was my infant brother.  Therefore, it was safe *for him* to
    make his visits.
    
    But there was no safe place for me as a child.  This continued until I
    was 13.  I had become so rebellious and my mouth was rather filthy as
    well.  When my mother would request that I do something, I would shout 
    obscenities at her and tell her to do it herself.  I now hated this woman 
    who didn't protect me with every fibre of my soul.  I begged my mother to 
    spend time with me and she never did!  She didn't spend enough time with 
    me to gain confidence, so that I could tell her the pain I was carrying 
    around.
    
    Then finally, relief came.  My mother had called Juvenile Hall and
    fabricated a story that I was on drugs and skipping school (I was
    considered incorrigible).  The truth is I *never* took drugs, and I
    *never* skipped school.  I was on the honor roll!  But no-one asked me, 
    they just went to my school, on my 13th birthday and the Florida State
    authorities picked me up and placed me in their custody.
    
    When I was brought in front of the Judge who heard my mother's case, I
    was asked this question, "How do you feel about living with another family
    that is not your own?".  My response verbatim without blinking an eye was,
    "Anything is better then living with these people."  The last words I
    spoke in front of my mother for a very long time.
    
    Praise God, He had His hand on my life.  I went into a Christian foster
    home.  Once settled in (that took some doing), I resisted the plan of
    salvation for about a year.  Then my foster parents gave me a book to
    read entitled "Run Baby Run" by Nicky Cruz.  In that book when Nicky asked
    Jesus into his heart, I knelt on my bed and asked Jesus into my heart and to
    forgive me of my sins.
    
    Many miracles occurred in my life after my faith in Christ. 
    Immediately, the hate for my mother turned to love. My biological 
    father paid for me to go to a Christian School, where I was blessed to 
    hear the powerful preaching/teaching of Godly men like, Jack Hyles,
    John R. Rice, Bob Gray, and Lester Roloff.
    
    My life verse, that I have claimed since I was 14 is Psalms 27:10,
    
     "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will 
      take me up."

    Happy Birthday, and thanks for sharing the healing you've experienced
    from the Lord.  Only He can truly heal a broken heart and replace it
    with a heart FULL of His love.
    
    It's neat to see how God can use people from all different types of
    backgrounds to accomplish His purposes.  My wife grew up in a Christian
    family, never took a drink, smoke a cigarette, etc. in her life.  Yet,
    she has a powerful testimony of how Christ has and is working in her
    life.  It doesn't matter what the Old flesh was like, we all are nothing 
    without Him.  Its also an awesome thought to think that the same Spirit
    which lives in you, also lives in me, and in the lives of all who
    Christians!

        Thanks.  We celebrated yesterday because we've got a guest
        arriving from England today who is bound to be warn out &
        tired after his travels and the time change.

        The kids and Greg went to the beach yesterday - brought me
        home a bucket of sand and a rock for my birthday so I'd feel 
        like I hadn't missed anything because of having to work..... 
        also brought me a lovely, delicate ceramic vase prettily 
        packaged and gift-wrapped.  I put a lily from the garden in 
        it and admired both the vase & lily while reading C.S. Lewis's 
        "The Siver Chair" to the kids last night.  We went out to 
        dinner so neither of us cooked. :-).

    Thanks for all the good wishes everyone.  I tend to count my years
    (i.e., do my personal inventory, mark milestones, etc) from birthday 
    to birthday, not January 1 - December 31.  This past year has been in
    turn: painful and joyful (if not happy) - in short, I've had growing
    pains!  Which is actually a wonderful thing because it means I'm ALIVE!
    and growing and not stagnent (either hot or cold but not lukewarm.)
    
    If anyone knows Amy Grant's song, 'Ask Me', you'll know what I'm
    talking about.  There's one line in that song that especially speaks to
    me: ...."she said His mercy is bringing her life again, she's coming to
    life again"....
    
    I've spent alot of years walking beside Jesus (sometimes closer,
    sometimes farther) but we've hung in together and I'm walking closer
    now than ever before and He's still breathing new life into me. 
    
    I'm thankful for this conference, this space to share our hearts.

    I agree Karen, I also appreciate this conference. Praise God for it. It
    makes work more pleasant and enjoyable knowing that I can "hook up"

I can't really rely on these, as my hair is fading to white rather than

Interesting that it hit .407 - I was born in '47, and am now 47!
(with *nothing* in the middle).  I've been doing mental exercises to

Meanwhile, I was truly encouraged by John's thoughtful wishes.  Thank you
John, your reply evoked a magnificent picture, conjuring up in my mind that
vision of a wonderful, hot stack, soaked in maple syrup, in all its glory,
and my mouth responded after its kind, and soon my whole digestive system
was playing the same tune....  It was a good 10 minutes before I could
return to tapping my keybord, and even then my hands were a trifle
sticky... that was good maple syrup, well soaked in to a properly absorbent

    Thanks for the birthday wishes.  I wouldn't have seen them yesterday
    anyway, as I was logged into other holiday activity 8^).   Actually
    this is the first time I can remember getting wished happy birthday at
    work or school (unless I said something about it being my B-day).  My

last night with a birthday party - a few former participants of Christian
notes were there & one newly participating again (Hi Ann), that some of you 
may remember - Dan & Jill Gosselin & their two sweet daughters, Philip and 
Danielle Morano (Dani is doing well, but the heat is causing some minor
problems during her pregnancy), and Dave & Ann Barndt, amongst other friends.
It was really nice!  A great evening!  Joshua, my step-son made me a special
birthday slide presentation on our PC at home using Powerpoint.  It was really,
