The Bookreader version of the Bible (A King James Version) requires
DECwindows and the DECwindows Bookreader application that comes with
DECwindows. It also requires a DECwindows workstation or DECwindows
terminal. There are a number of ways to start the Bookreader. One is
from DCL using the command RUN SYS$SYSTEM:DECW$BOOKREADER. The other is
from your applications menu. If it is not defined in your applications
menu you can add it from the CUSTOMIZE APPLICATIONS MENU. Use the
RUN command above as your Menu Command:

If have trouble reading the Bookreader files (are getting an error or the
Bookreader is hanging) make sure the BOOKBROWSER PAK is installed. A command
file (called BOOKBROWSER.COM) is on the CD on-line documentation CD
that you may have. If don't have this command file but find you need it
send mail. 

There are several locations you place the Bible files. If you have
write access and the system managers permission you may place them in
the standard DECW$BOOK: directory. This may not be possible or considered
optimal as there are a lot of files. You may place the files in any other
directory and define the logical DECW$BOOK: to point to them. Assuming
you are placing them in DISK$FOO:[MYAREA.BIBLE] you would use the following
command to do this:

$ DEFINE DECW$BOOK SYS$COMMON:[DECW_BOOK],DISK$FOO:[MYAREA.BIBLE] 

This assumes there are no other directories in the search list. This command
will only define the search tree you you. If you want to set it up for all
users you will need privileges and use the the /SYSTEM/EXE qualifiers.

At this time you can copy the files you need to what ever area you want. The
command file: CVG""::WORK1:[THOMPSON]BIBLE_COPY.COM will copy all the files
you need. It defaults to copying to DECW$BOOK: but you can edit it to point
to any other location. The command file uses FTSV the network spool copy
by default. If you do not have that tool installed remove the line that
defines the copy command.

The next step will be to make sure that a DECW$BOOKSHELF file points to
the Bible files. Three DECW$BOOKSHELF files are copied to your target area by:

CVG""::WORK1:[THOMPSON]BIBLE_COPY.COM.

They are:

KING-JAMES.DECW$BOOKSHELF
NEW-TESTAMENT.DECW$BOOKSHELF
OLD-TESTAMENT.DECW$BOOKSHELF

There are several ways you can add these. If you do not have write access
your best option is probable to RENAME KING-JAMES.DECW$BOOKSHELF (still
in your target area which should be in your DECW$BOOK search list) to
LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF . This will cause the Old and New Testament entries
to show up at the bottom of the Library window that the bookreader will bring
up. Or you can create a LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file that contains a line like:

SHELF\KING-JAMES\The Bible (King James Version)

which will point to the KING-JAMES shelf which will point to the Old and New
Testaments. If you have write access to your system wide
DECW$BOOK:LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF you can just add a line to that file. Or
to an other existing DECW$BOOKSHELF file in the tree.

You should now be all set. Send comments and/or questions to CVG::THOMPSON.

Final Note: A number of the larger books of the Bible currently
come in two parts. This is because I ran it to some hard upper limits in
the number and size of index entries. The BIBLE_COPY.COM file and the
DECW$BOOKSHELF files it copies will copy all needed parts.

	Assuming you've actually using the Bookreader Bible you've
	probably run into a situation where you wanted to look up a
	reference. Now if you knew what book the reference was in it
	was fairly easy. You just used the index in the book. If you 
	didn't know what book it was in you had to go book by book.
	Or wait until you could get to a paper Bible. Or you just
	gave up. Well that may all change for you now. 

	An online whole Bible concordance now exists and can be yours
	for the cost of copying about 77,500 blocks worth of files to
	your local DECW$BOOK: device. 

	The concordance consists of a BIBLE_INDEX.DECW$BOOKSHELF file
	and 25 letter books (no "X" entries right now. Should there be?).
        You may copy all these files using the command:

	$ COPY CVG""::DECW$BOOK:BIBLE_INDEX*.DECW* DECW$BOOK:

	Although I'd use FTSV (SPOOL) as this will take a while. Then add
	the line

SHELF\BIBLE_INDEX\Whole Bible Concordance (For The Authorized Translation)

	To the top level Bible DECW$BOOK file. You should then be all set.

	Unfortunately you can't click on one of these entries and jump
	right to the verse in the Bible Book itself but at least you
	can find pointers easier. 

	Comments on this and the Bookreader Bible are always welcome.

        A simple retrieval-by-mail interface to CBRS is now
        implemented for retrieval from a text database consisting of
        the text of the King James Version of the Bible.

        You request a search by sending an electronic mail message to
        lgp30::bibleserver with the word "find" (or "search" or
        "query") in the subject line.  The very first line of the
        text of this message must be the query in the CBRS "internal"
        query language*.  Any additional lines are ignored.

        If you send a message to lgp30::bibleserver with the word
        "help" in the subject, it will respond with an overview of
        this query language.  To get you started:  form-insensitive
        word match is specified by enclosing any form of the word in
        apostrophes (single quotes).

        Two starter examples, the query:

        	'sanctify'

        matches "sanctify", and "sanctification", as well as other
        forms.  To require two or more words occurring in the same
        sentence, follow the following example:

        	sentence ('vision', 'perish')

        The results are sent by return E-mail to the sending address. 
        Please note that not a lot of work has gone into this yet. 
        The results are essentially the output (slightly modified) of
        the demo_query program shipped with the CBRS field test kit,
        plus an excerpt of the documents (each chapter is a separate
        document in the CBRS index) centered around the hits.

        I intend to put more thought and work into this (hopefully in
        that order!) to see if this can be made into a useful adjunct
        to other, more highly interactive methods for document
        retrieval.

        Please note that, especially because this is an AD prototype,
        system logs are maintained of the queries, and the identity
        of the sender can be deduced from them.  If this concerns
        you, please don't use this facility!

        I welcome all suggestions as well as help in making
        improvements and mounting other databases.

zillion different products that run on PCs or MACs.  It runs from a $595 CD Word
Interactive Library
    (4 English versions, Greek NT and LXX, Bauer-Arndt-Gingrich's and
    Liddell & Scott's lexicons, a couple Bible dictionaries, "Little
    Kittel", 3 commentaries, all Greek parsings, illustrations, maps,
    charts, etc.)
a $995 CD Oxford English Dictionay (1933 ed.), and some multi-hundred-dollar
"morphological" (actual Greek/Hebrew fonts) packages -- all the way down to
semi-affordable stuff.  A real techno-weenie's dream!  Of course, CBD (Christian
Book Distributors) has their prices beat for the products they list.

    It's called "God's Word for Windows" and is excellent for cutting and
    pasting into other Windows-based applications.  There are 12 files
    which, when unZipped fit onto three HD diskettes.

    Which version?  NIV, KJV, what?

    Alas, Authorized Version King James only.
    
    I have version 6 of the PC format Online Bible which includes AVKJ and
    the more modern Darby version plus an online chain reference, a
    treasury of scriptural knowledge, a Strong's concordance and a
    Greek/Hebrew lexicon.  It takes up about 13 Mbytes in compressed form
    and several more when installed.
    
    I was able to send out some copies of version 5 which was only (!) six
    MBytes.  Sorry I don't have the resources to do the same with this
    version.
    
    I can load it on the network but I can't maintain a permanent home for
    the package.  Anyone have spare disk space?

I would but TOKNOW is in a protected area.  I need to see what I can do 
about this; makes it tough to allow copying from my system.

Just last week I bought a Bible software package for my PC.  Since I'd gotten
the PC I'd wanted to get a Bible package, but I've been waiting and watching to
find the best that's available.

I think LOGOS is it.

It was created by two people who left Microsoft (where they were working on 
Windows) about a year ago to create the best Windows Bible package that they
could.  The basis of their design is that it is completely modular - you buy the
base package, and then there are add-on modules that you can install to add
whatever other features you want.

The base package has the KJV, with Strong's expanded Lexicon, and a 500,000
entry cross-reference from the "Treasury of Scripture Knowledge."  It is a full-
featured windows application, so you can do all the normal windows sorts of
things, like changing the fonts, moving things out to the clipboard (either as
plain text or fully formatted), etc.  You can create your own notes or cross 
references and save them in as many different files as you like.  There are
many one-click icons to do things like go to bookmarks, show/hide notes or
cross references, search, move forward/backward a chapter or a book, show/hide
italics, single verse/paragraph, indent for poetry, etc.

Strong's is completely integrated into the text.  You click on one "#" icon, and
the Strong's numbers appear directly in the text.  Click on the number, and the
Strong's lexicon entry pops up.  The entry includes the root numbers, and a 
click on those will bring you to those entries.  You can search for the number,
and find all the other occurences of that original language word.

The search abilities are very good and very fast.  You can of course do all the 
normal AND, OR, XOR type searches, but there are other features too.  There is
the WITHINn qualifier, so you could specify (jesus or christ) within2 paul, and
it will find any occurence of the words jesus or christ within two verses of the
word paul.  You can also search for phrases.  If on a word search you don't get 
the spelling right, it will give you a list of possible alternatives - if you 
try for "Zorrobubble", it will ask if you really meant "Zerubabble."

Then it has "approximate search" mode.  You can give it a vaguely remembered
phrase, and it will search for possible matches.  For example, you could give it
"I press toward the prize", and it will find Phil 3:14: "I press on toward the
goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."  You can adjust
how sensitive this search is if it doesn't find it the first time.

There are also little things where you can tell it was written by people who
knew windows inside and out.  Like you can start it, and select an option to
make it visible to other applications, then iconize it.  Now start ANY other
windows application, and when you pull down the EDIT menu, there will be an
entry "Insert Verses" at the bottom.  If you select this, it will pop up a 
window that will allow you to specify what verses you want and from what 
version, and it will import those verses - complete with font information - 
directly into the application.

There are lots of add-on modules, and they're providing more all the time.
Some of them (I can't remember them all) are:

Other versions.  Includes at least NIV, RSV, NKJV, ASV, plus ones in French,
	Spanish, and Dutch.  More are planned.  I know they don't have NAS or
	Amplified yet, as those are two I'd be interested in.  When you bring
	in another version, you can set up two windows side-by-side with the
	different versions, and you can link them together so that when you move
	in one the other moves with it.

Original languages.  There are four versions of the Greek available, and two of
	the Hebrew.  They come with TrueType fonts for the languages that allow
	things like diacritical marks, etc, and the Hebrew font automatically
	types in right-to-left.  You can set these up in a linked window also,
	or import them into other applications via "Insert Verses."

Nave's Topical Bible.  Complete and integrated.  Click on the verses you find
	and go there.

TVM - tense, voice, mood.  A numbering system similar to Strong's that gives the
	tense, voice, and mood of every greek verb, and similar information for
	the hebrew.  The numbers come up in the text the same way that the
	Strong's numbers do, and you just click on the number to get the entry
	for that verb.

There are at least two commentaries already available, I don't remember which
ones they are.  And as I said, they are constantly adding more.  All of the
above is what has become available in the first year they've been producing it.

This software isn't cheap, but it isn't outrageous either.  The basic package
is $129, you can get a dual version with RSV for $149, with NIV for $159.  Other
pieces are about $30-50 each.  Nave's was $49, TVM is $39.  Also their upgrade
policy is great - you can upgrade to the current version from any previous
version for $30.

One place that I know this is available is Cornerstone Bookstore in Bedford, NH.

I've had fun using this already, and it's only been a week.

    Reading all these features makes me wish I had a PC at home...  But, I
    still like my Franklin Electronics KJV -- although not as feature-rich,
    it still does multi-word search (with adjustable "width"), word-form
    expansion (all forms of a word included in the search), and thesaurus
    mode (other similar words included in the search).  It has a good
    spell-checker as well.  And best of all, it's so small that I can carry
    it in the case with my Bible, or in my briefcase.
    
    The Franklin is available in KJV and RSV, and I think there is one
    additional translation available now (I don't think its NIV or NASV).

Well, it's about 4 meg for each version of the Bible.  Then about 2 Meg for the
basic engine, with Strongs and the cross-references.  About 10-12 all told for
a dual-version base package.

 :-)  No not that! :-)  I had the Shareware Bible software loaded for while..
 took up 9 megs which was fine, but I think I need more memory to deal with it.

    I have written a simple UNIX script program that will display a
    randomly selected passage of Scripture.  The passage is selected from a
    collection of 92 verses from the NIV translation and is intended to
    be uplifting and encouraging.
    
    I use the program occasionally while I'm working to pick me up, and
    sometimes to add Scripture to the end of my e-mail messages.  If you
    use csh(1) as your login shell, the output can be written to your .plan
    file everytime you logout by adding this line to your .logout file:
    
       dv | tee ~/.plan
    
    This lets others know something about your beliefs when they use the
    finger(1) command and can possibly be used as a witnessing tool.
    
    Unfortunately, the machine that I use is in area 33's hidden area 60,
    so I can't give a general access pointer.  I do have the programs tar'd
    and uuencoded, so if you are interested, send me e-mail and I'll e-mail
    you the encoded tar file and installation instructions.  The whole
    thing taks up about 120k; however, I hope to grow the Scripture
    collection in the future.
    
    If anyone knows where I can get a ASCII text copy of the Bible or
    portions of it, preferably NIV, please let me know.  That would save
    me a lot of typing :-)

      God's Word for Windows fits onto three high density disks and unpacks
      into about 7 MB.   It's not as complex as some of the commercial
      packages but it is shareware.
      
      I'm still trying to get the latest Online Bible on-line.  Maybe by
      tonight.

do you know if there is an Amiga version of this software?  I'll copy over the
disks that you put out, but I did not know if the files were mainly text, or
if there are also programs.  I wouldn't have a problem writing some of my own
for the text, so...

I need to restart my efforts to port these files off to my PC and
I'll see what's up.  It may take beyond the weekend, though.

    One of the problems may be that you're using PKUNZIP v2.04.  The files
    on FEIVEL were zipped using version 1 and there is incompatability
    between the two.
    
    I'll try to get a copy of the old PKUNZIP on the net.

 a couple of years ago, I've been using it since, *THEY* did all of the work,
 and I don't even remember their name!

 This  access is a service point for several local workstations for the bible,
 we have just added the line 

 shelf\fievel""::sys$public:[decw$bible]bible\Bible

 to the local.decw$bookshelf file for those machines.

 re: 9000 blocks? surely you jest?  thie index files alone are 77000 block,
 the entire text and support files are 163000 blocks.

 A man in my church last night offered to copy the Online Bible (Shareware) for

I don't, but I wonder if 9000 blocks was a misprint.  In any event, that's
why 12.1 is hidden, because the information there is not accurate.

There's a simple concordance facility (well, it also allows 'and's or
'or's, though not both in tha same search), for which the Bible lookup is 
a little under 8800 blocks, and the .exe is 142 blocks.  I still use this 
one, and you can copy it from:

	ICTHUS::ICTHUS$DUA0:[YUILLE.CONC]BIBLE.KJV
	ICTHUS::ICTHUS$DUA0:[YUILLE.CONC]CONC3.EXE

...now who produced it? - I don't have any sources, and can't offer any 
support, or much info about it.

To use it, declare a symbol

$	conc=="$dev:[dir]conc2"

Run it by:
$	-s"search string" startbook startchap:verse endbook endchap:verse

eg

$ conc -s"husband" Isaiah 3:1 Jeremiah 1:1

    From the directory where the files reside, do a "dir" command.  The
    first thing that will be shown will be:
      "Directory DEVICENAME:[DIRECTORY]"  or
      "Directory DEVICENAME:[DIRECTORY.SUBDIRECTORY]"
    Whatever follows the word "Directory " is the pathname you want to use
    for the device and directory.
    
    Also, if you have CONC3.EXE, be sure NOT to define the command
    indicating CONC2.

    You also need to define a logical that points to the text file.  For
    you, the command line to add to your login.com would be:
     $ define bible_file $user3$:[silva]bible.kjv

    Sorry to hear about the problems you've been having with the Online
    Bible.  I've re-ZIPped and re-loaded the files at:
    
    	KAOU93::DISK$CSS_USER:[HATASHITA.ONLINE]
    
    There are 10 files there.  The .ZIP files are the disks which are
    required for a full package (AKJV-Darby, Greek & Hebrew, Scofield
    notes, Strong's, TSL, etc...) installation of version 6.  
    
    There is also a file called PKZ204C.EXE which is the self-extracting
    package of PKware compression utilities (v. 2.04) which is what I used
    to zip the disks.  You need to use the PKUNZIP.EXE program on each of
    the .ZIP files to uncompress them.
    
    When you unZip the disks make sure that you keep the uncompressed files 
    on their proper disks, otherwise the installation will not finish.  You
    will need to unZip the files onto 1.44 Mb floppies.
    
    The .ZIP files correspond to the disks as given in the following table:
    
    	DISK1.ZIP	Installation, cross reference, program files.
    	DISK2.ZIP	AKJV and Darby version of the Bible.  Disk 1.
    	DISK3.ZIP	AKJV and Darby version of the Bible.  Disk 2.
    	DISK4.ZIP	AKJV and Darby version of the Bible.  Disk 3.
    	DISK5.ZIP	Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge, notes. Disk 1.
    	DISK6.ZIP	Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge, notes. Disk 2.
    	DISK7.ZIP 	Topics disk
    	DISK8.ZIP	Scofield notes
    	DISK9.ZIP	Revised Greek and Hebrew Lexicon
    
    When you run the installation program on DISK1, it will prompt you to
    insert the first disks from each module you wish to install.  If you're
    tight on disk space you can work with a minimum installation of disks
    2, 3 and 4.  The other disks contain a library's worth of additional
    information and cross references.
    
    For the amount of trouble this installation may be, I promise you that,
    once the software is running you will not be disappointed.  This
    software matches the performance and features of other packages costing
    hundreds of dollars. 
    
    If anyone has any problems with the files or the actual program, please

 Thanks to Kris, the newly uploaded `online' downloaded to fievel vax and
 to pc to unzip with the 2.04c pkunzip and installed on a 325p running
 DOS 6.0 .

 Fair warning to anyone that downloaded the first verion of the zipped files,
 at least one has something strange when unzipped (no errors at unzip) in
 that they generate internal crc errors at install.  Get the new zip files,
 dated 6-apr-1993 and use pkz204c to unzip.  Perhaps other versions of
 pkz will work, but this one *does* work.

 I have deleted the earlier version of the zips from fievel and placed the
 new versions in their place.

 Now if I can just get used to this version, I've been running 2.0?

 Oh, I have the unzipped install floppies in my office, anyone is welcome to
 borrow them and return them.  Walking driving is slow, but the amount of
 bits in a fistful of floppies makes it a much higher baud rate venture
 than a modem!

    Good to hear.
    
    I would recommend that anyone using version 6 order a manual for eight
    dollars.  The address is given in one of the READ.ME files.  There is a
    help file included but it's much handier to have the book at your side
    when navigating through this package.
    
    Also, if the spirit moves you, please consider donating some money to
    the folks at Online since they do incur expenses making this package
    available free to missions around the world.

Does anyone know if other versions of the Bible are available besided KJV?
 In particular for the pc? Please let me know.

    The free "Online Bible" discussed in this note string seems to contain
    the "Darby" as well as KJV.  The "Darby" is the "New Translation" by
    John Nelson Darby.  Although not as widely known as some translations,
    it is a very good one (especially in the New Testament, IMO).

    Also, the Logos software described earlier in this note has
    more than 10 different versions available, including versions in
    greek and hebrew.  We just got it and it is AWESOME!

    This may be old but when I used it on a PC (a 286), it worked, and will
    also work on a DEC RAINBOW, so it should work on any kind of DOS PC.

    I'm using ONLINE Bible V6.0 and WPS-PLUS/DOS V4.1 on a DEC PC.  I would
    LOVE to get the Online TSR to work in WPS-PLUS, but haven't been able
    to.  Anyone else out there tried it?

    I have copied the ZIP files from both FIEVEL and KAOU93 onto a local
    node along with PKZ204C.EXE
    
    From the PC, I did the following
    
    C:\>use ?: \\EGAV01\EDGAR *
    
    and logged onto the local node, which gave my a drive X:
    
    I then created a directory using the MD command, and unzipped the
    .ZIP files into this directory. I then ran the INSTALL command and
    chose the option to copy files to pre-formatted disks (1.44MByte). This
    took up 10 diskettes. I then tried to run the install procedure from
    A: - the directory structure was created fine. When it started on the
    AV-DBY part, it started 'processing' TEXT.DAT - the first diskette
    went o.k. ; however when it reached 73% on the 2nd. diskette it came
    up with a CRC Error.
    
    I have now tried this whole process 5 times - on a VAXmate (v3.3), on
    a DECstation 325 (v6.0), on a DECstation 350 (v5.0), each time
    re-formatting the diskettes and going through the COPY procedure. For
    the VAXmate, I had to use 5�" diskettes.
    
    The ZIP files are dated 6-APR-1992 and PKUNZIP is extracted from
    PKZ204C (I have even tried PKZ204G).
    
    Can anybody shed any help on what is going wrong here - my knowledge of
    DOS is somewhat limited...

    How do you copy from the local node to the pc? I had to make sure that
    the files on the vms system where of fixed 512 record size. I had to
    use a command file to make them of fixed 512 record size and then
    kermit to the Pc and all works Ok. Ican post a pointer here to so you
    can get the command file if you require it.

What I do is to convert the file with vms before kermitting it to the pc.
I did have to do this with pkz204g.exe.

To check the file before you kermit and find it doesn't work do an anal/rms
on the file to find if it is fixed lenght 512.

    Copy the following two files to your account:

WISDOM is a program written in BASIC which has a base of Biblical texts. 
When it's run, it generates a 'random' number to offer one of these texts. 
It is currently available in KJV, NAS, NIV, and in Spanish.... 

You can copy it from:

		ICTHUS::SYS$PUBLIC:WISDOM_NAS.EXE
		ICTHUS::SYS$PUBLIC:WISDOM_NIV.EXE

If you want to add more texts, translations, etc...  The sources are there

    I also had problems with the first copy of ONLINE BIBLE V6.0. I have
    now sucessfully installed the complete package and can confirm that it
    is even better than before!
    
    I have been working on getting the online bible onto SIMTEL and other
    public domain sites. Currently it is on a node called WINNAH, the full
    path name is WINNAH""::"\ftp\msdos\bible" - there are 10 files all
    starting with "onbib" eg onbibins.zip - the install disk. I would
    advise you to read the onbibrme.1st for instructions on how to make
    your nine installation disks. You will need to use the latest version
    of PKUNZIP to extract the files. I strongly recommend SPOOL for copying
    the files.
    
    Eventually they will work there way onto CALDEC::PD1:[MSDOS.BIBLE] and
                                             VMSMKT::PD1:[MSDOS.BIBLE]
    where you will be able to use the normal VMS syntax for copying files
    rather than the case senitive U*IX as above.
    
    It takes a while to load and about 20MB of disk space if you install
    everything but it is well worth the effort.

    I should have said - please restrict access to out of hours - yet
    another reason for using SPOOL!

 This weekend I loaded up and installed GWW as referenced back a few replies.

 Having now loaded the Online 5.0 and 6.0 as well as GWW, perhaps a few words
 are in order.

 Firstly, Online is DOS; version 6.0 on the net has both the AV and Darby
 translations, while 5.0 appears to have just the AV, hence it takes less
 disk space.  Version 6.0 appears to be installable with just one of the
 translations instead of both if disk space is an issue. Probably should
 just go with the 6.0 if one is trying to choose between the versions.

 GWW is similar to Online, but for DOS windows with some exceptions.  The
 search mode in GWW allows, in a very straighforward fashion, the search
 with multiple strings with AND and OR operations.  On the down side, for
 detail study, there are more notes available with the Online kits.  Mousing
 around the menus might be faster for some folks.

 There is a CD out there, selling for $28 - $60 depending who is advertising
 it, and assuming that there is one product not 10!  It has 9 translations
 (American Standard, King James, New King James, Living Bible, New              
 International, Revised Standard, Simple English New Testament, Literal English 
 Translation, Hebrew-Greek Transliteration), plus 20 Bible dictionaries,        
 commentaries and reference works with Strong's Numbers. I've seen the ad is
 the DAK catalog and in Computer Shopper.

 Here is another difference between the two subject electronic Bibles, GW4W
 has a fixed lookup list for words! and somewhat incomplete.  With Online
 I've yet to find a word that I could not look up, `with' did me in last night
 while studying, GW4W offered the excuse that it was not entered into the 
list of words, therefore it could not be searched for.  In addition the Online
phrase search has some advantages over the GW4W approach.

It is interesting to have both up on the screen in their own windows at the same
time!  I used to have paper books spread every which way, ok, so I still have
quite a few paper Bibles spread out on occasion....

 Could someone else running Bible Online 6.0 please check on a file for me?
 When using the .pif files in dos windows, they both point to a bible.bat file,
 which does not exist (as near as I can discern), biblew.bat does exist and
 if the .pif files are repointed to this bat file instead, the windows
 version sort of works.  Sort of ==> no mouse, no double click on corner to
 exit....

 
 I have put both GW4W and Online 6.0 up on Pathworks, and finally have them
 running, maybe....  We still have some problems around multiple users,
 and some files (eg notes.map) which must open write enable, hence must be
 local (server based, shared files must be read only to protect against
 corruption).

 If an alternate directory is chosen for installation  (eg not c:\bible),
 file biblew.bat will not be correct, and will have to be edited, it will
 point to c:\bible.

 Likewise, both .pif files will still point to c:\bible.  Use the pif editor.

          ^ no space!

You should be able to access all verses containing the word spirit 
in the gospels of Matthew through John.

Jim Glenn says DFS users can have slightly faster access. 
If you flood DECnet, then you'll have to answer to Jim for
degrading his system performance.

Other commands:

$ BIBLE JOHN 3:16

   This begins to list all verses beginning with John 3:15 to the end
   of the Bible.  Please use CTRL/Y to interrupt.  You can also supply
   and ending verse.

    performance hit from multiple network copy requests.  I will rudely

    If there are too many violations during those hours, I will take them

    Having said that, the repository that this group would be interested in

    Running Online Bible V6.0.  I installed on a laptop.  Works fine, with
    one exception:
    
    	When I press F10 for Cross-References, Online simply repeats the
    	current verse in the scan window.
    
    	If I create a note for a verse, suddenly F10 for that verse works
    	correctly.
    
    Any thoughts?

 I picked this up a couple of weeks ago, and tried to mount it under
 VMS served by Pathworks to the PCs, no joy.  Although the CD was purported
 to be ISO, it does not have a volume label, or it is all blanks.  

 This is here in this note just to point out that Version 1.1 has trouble, to
 save the unwary a few bucks.

 Now, if someone has some constructive ideas to mount/server this CD, please
 share them offline so to don't clutter this string up.

    Many of us utilize the VMS (and Ultrix?) version of the concordance
    program (utilizing CONC3.EXE and BIBLE.KJV files).  Recently I was
    searching for something that I *knew* existed, but my "conc" searches
    continually came up dry.  At home, a momement with Strongs pointed me to
    the text I was looking for.  This got me wondering why the online
    version never gave me what I wanted.  A little deeper searching
    revealed that the BIBLE.KJV files (I checked both FIEVEL:: and ICTHUS::
    versions) seems to be somewhat abridged -- the book of Deuteronomy ends
    with chapter 21.

I pulled down my Parallel Bible once to check out CONC's spelling of
Boaz (which spelled it Booz), but the KJV confirmed that they spelled 
it Booz while the other translations spelled it Boaz.

The point being, it is not a bad idea to check things out when they look
a little off.  Many times, I will pull up Scripture references people
give in this conference (call me Berean) to ensure that the context
is maintained.

Acts 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they
received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures
daily, whether those things were so.

If you searched for "Boaz" in the King James, and it couldn't find it, it will
pop up with a box asking (Not an exact quote, but to this effect):

"Couldn't find 'Boaz.'  Did you mean 'Booz'?"

At home I use a Mac, and through the Scripture Union Bookshop in London I
got WORDsearch Computer Bible, produced in the USA by Navpress Software. 
I'm pretty impressed with it (as a non-techie DECcie) and it seems to do
searches and displays really well.  It searches by reference/word/phrase, 
and will display references/verses/contexts.  There's a notepad window
alongside the display window, for making notes and comments.  It's produced
in both Mac and MS-DOS versions.

It's available in NIV, KJV, NKJV, NRSV, Living Bible, with Strong's, 
Nave's Topics, and a Bridge module to give direct access to your usual WP
application.  I've a demo diskette that you're allowed to copy, so if 
someone here in Sophia Antipolis will help me do it, I'll get the demo 
uploaded into the Mac archive.

I've no connections with the firm that produces this software - I just tell
you what I've found good value.

    The following archive includes a BIBLE.KJV that includes all of 
    Deuteronomy. CONC3 still has trouble with it because an incorrect
    chapter count is hard coded into it. It will find things if the
    range starts before chapter 22 and ends in or after Joshua but
    specifying anything inside that range will get an error. If anyone
    finds the source to CONC3 send me mail and I'll fix it.

    Mark was correct. There was a problem with CONC2 (and still is with
    CONC3) because those programs have a byte count hard coded in as well
    as a chapter count. Counting bytes is easy, that's why we have
    computers, so I have corrected the CONC2.C and CONC2.EXE in my area.
    If anyone patches CONC3.EXE would you please send me mail so I can
    get a copy. Thanks.

    OK, for all CONC3 users, it's time to copy again.
    
    After using my previously patched version, I realized that something
    wasn't working right.  In the process of trying to figure out what was
    wrong, I looked around to see if anyone had the older version of
    CONC3.EXE and BIBLE.KJV -- I got a sinking feeling as ICTHUS and FIEVEL
    both already had been updated.  A little more examination of CONC3.EXE
    (the source cannot be located) and I figured out where the problem lay. 
    Another round of patching, and it's ready to go.
    
    So, you need to copy CONC3.EXE again from (courtesy of Alfred Thompson)

    Note that if you already copied the revised BIBLE.KJV, you do *not*

    define a logical BIBLE_FILE pointing to BIBLE.KJV, and define a foreign
    command to execute CONC3.EXE .  Then the instructions tell the various
    possible ways to use the program.

    One additional note about the instructions (README.TXT):
    
    In the example, they show
      $ conc -w30 -s"battle & lord" 1Sam 1:1 Job 1:1
    
      will search for battle AND lord beginning at 1st Samuel 1:1 and
      end the search at Job 1:1, with a wrap at column 30.
    
    This is a little misleading, as it will warch for "battle " AND
    " lord" -- the spaces included.  So, if the word "battle" had something
    other than a space after it, or the word "lord" didn't have a space
    before it, no match would be made.  A better command line would be:
      $ conc -w30 -s"battle&lord" 1Sam 1:1 Job 1:1
    omitting the spaces between the quotes.
    
    One additional hint -- often when studying a chapter, I like to print
    out a hard copy of it that I can mark up freely.  To do this, I figure
    out what the last verse of the chapter is (I usually just do a CONC to
    the next chapter verse 1), I'll call the last verse number 'n' below. 
    Then, to get the text of chapter 'ch' from book 'book', do:
    
    $ define/user sys$output x.x
    $ conc book ch:1 book ch:n
    
    will give you a file X.X with the text of the chapter.  Sometimes I add
    a width qualifier to the CONC command line as well.
    NOTE:  DO NOT forget /USER on the "define".

    bible.kjv . They are surrently in my dir . What I need help with is
    defining a logical name - not sure what you mean here and also a
    foreign command . I have yet to start anything - chicken I guess .

    There are some changes that I would *love* to make in CONC3.EXE, but
    the alas, source seems to be forever gone.  It recently occurred to me
    that the changes I really want don't require source, as long as DCL is
    available (sorry, PDM).  So, I went to work with DCL.  What I really
    wanted was the ability to abbreviate the command line, so that if you
    only want one verse, you just had to enter the reference once.  Or, if
    you want an entire chapter, you could just enter the book and chapter.
    Or, if the ending book is the same as the starting book, you don't have
    to enter the ending book the second time.  The result is CONC.COM,
    which is contained in the following reply.  It contains details at the
    top.  A summary of the changes is:

    If you want to refer to just one verse, you only need to enter
     conc [-w] [-s] book ch:vv

    If you want to refer to just a single chapter, you only need to enter
     conc [-w] [-s] book ch

    If you want to refer to just a single book, enter
     conc [-w] [-s] book

    If you want to search a range of books, enter
     conc -s"search_string" start_book end_book

    Anyway, CONC.COM, is contained in the next reply.  To use it:

    1) Extract the following reply as CONC.COM .  From character cell
       notes, the command you can use is
         Notes> EXTRACT/NOHEAD CONC.COM 12.130
    2) Exit from notes.  If your default directory is not the same as where
       your CONC3.EXE and BIBLE.KJV reside, rename CONC.COM to that
       directory.

    FOR CURRENT USERS OF THE 'CONC' PROGRAM:
    3) You need to modify your login.com (or wherever you define the
       symbol/foreign command to invoke your current CONC program) as follows:
         You currently have something like:
           DEFINE BIBLE_FILE disk_name:[directory.subdirectory]BIBLE.KJV
           CONC :== $disk_name:[directory.subdirectory]CONC3
         where disk_name:[directory.subdirectory] is your directory path.
         Do NOT modify the DEFINE BIBLE_FILE line.

         Change the second line (CONC :== $diskname:....) to look like this:

         i.e., add a "3" to the initial "CONC" .  If you used some other
         symbol (such as "BIBLE") to activate the program, replace it with
         CONC3  .  Also, your directory path should be used in place of
         disk_name:[directory.subdirectory]

         Then, add the following, using your directory path in place of
         disk_name:[directory.subdirectory]
           CONC :== @disk_name:[directory.subdirectory]CONC
         Notice:  the '@' after the ==, and just CONC at the end.
         If you prefer some other command (such as BIBLE) to start things
         off, use it in place of the *first* "CONC" in this line.

    FOR NEW USERS OF THE CONC PROGRAM:

         to your system

        $ define conc := @your$disk:[your_directory]conc
       replacing your$disk and your_directory with the location where
       your files are located.  (Doing a 'dir' will show you this.)

    Once you log back in (or do @login), these new definitions will be in
    place, and you should be able to use the simplified commands.

    If you want to play around and see what kind of defaults CONC.COM will
    come up with, just enter "-t" after the conc command.  The resulting
    command will be displayed, but no actual execution will take place. 
    For example,
     $ conc -t -w60 -s"altar" ex deut
     The final command is:
     conc -W60 -S"altar" EX 1:1 DEUT 999:999

    Note that 999 is used for a default ending chapter and/or verse.

    Let me know if you have any problems.  Also, I make no claims as to be

earlier version of God's Word For Windows and really like it. I'm in the

    Is there an on-line version of the NAS?  
    
    btw - I saw in the CBD catalog that IBM has just come out with a CD-ROM
    with 9 different version on it, concordances, dictionary, commentary,
    etc.  Sounds cool and it's about time somebody did it.  The Bible
    reference books are a perfect fit for CD-ROM.

 I loaded this on my home machine this weekend, and poked around a bit,
 dissapointed would be an understatement.  The search engine is crude
 compared to ONLINE and God's Word for Windows, real crude.  There does
 not appear to be an easy text browser beyond the search engine.  Online
 help is there, but not easy access.  I just checked the street price for
 this today, it is going for $39 discount.  Buy something else!

    which is available for the taking on TRINTY::PD1:[MSDOS.BIBLE], has
    been quite a blessing in my learning of God. 
    
    If you don't have the tools/ability to copy/PKunzip/install these on
    your PC, send me mail, and I'd be happy to help.
    
    Only thing I haven't figured out yet is how activate the Treas of
    Script. Knowlg. part of this program. Can any one assist me in this?

	Are you looking for a single volume commentary?  Or a commentary set?
The one I use is the Bible Knowledge Commentary.  It is a two-volume edition,
one for the Old Testament, one for the New Testament, that is written by several
members of the Dallas Theological Seminary staff.  

	In the multi-volume set, Matthew Henry's commentaries are pretty good.

	The Bible Knowledge commentary will run about $30-$35 per volume (I 
think... I received mine as a gift, and don't remember the actual price).

 Do we have enough folks using God's Word for Windows to justify a site
 license for DEC vs individual licenses?

 An individual lincense is $40 +$10 for each of up to three modules
 (Young's, Darby, Weymouth's).  A site license is $70 base, and $10
 per machine for the full set, up to a site maximum of $400.

    Site licenses are justified by the seller on the basis of reduced cost
    of the transaction.  Only if you all got together and gave him one
    transaction would *he* realise any savings.  It's up to him to set the
    rules though; do Christians working in Digital constitute a site?

    Well, before I leave I might as well post my latest version of
    CONC.COM, since I have made a few improvements.  It will be contained
    in the next reply.  Changes (that I can remember from memory) are:

    1) the order of the initial "arguments" (all the things that begin with
    "-") is unimportant.  You can put -s"whatever", -wNN, etc., in any
    order.  However, they MUST be before the first "reference" (starting
    book).

    2) an additional argument for an output file has been added.  If you
    enter "-o filename.dat" in the arguement list, the results will go to
    "filename.dat" instead of the screen.  Be careful that you don't make a
    mistake which causes the CONC3 program to start output from Genesis.
    :-)  Also note that a space is expected after the -o.

    3) the default width is 70 rather than 80.  If you want a width other
    than 70, specifiy "-wNN" in your command line.

    4) if you put a space between -s and the search string, the query will
    be rejected.  Remember, the format is -s"search&for&this".

I'm not a frequent reader of this conference, but I do read from time to time,
so I'm not sure where stuff goes. Greg Johnson, SPEZKO::g_johnson, was
recently TFSO'ed. He had a distribution list that sends out scriptures on
a daily basis. I believe this is a "bible in a year" reading. Each day, (25
days a month) you get mailed a some scriptures. Read these for a year, and
you'll have read the entire bible. Greg asked his distribution list if someone
would take it, and since I've got the disk space, have run other mailer 
programs, etc., I told him I'd do it.

Anyway... I'm not sure how folks got on Greg's list (I got on thru a friend
telling me about it), if it was just word of mouth, or if he "advertised"
somewhere. He told me I could "advertise" however I wanted. Therefore, I'm
entering this note. 

I'm now maintaining this list, and if anyone would like to be on it, just
send mail to AZTECH::WAGNER and asked to be added to the Scriptures mailing
list.

    Does anyone know if an electronic version of the New American Standard
    Version (NASB) is available?  I'm used to NASB and I can easily
    understand it.
    
    I noticed the LOGOS software mentioned earlier (note 12.15) and a note
    by Steve McConnell that looked interesting, but at that time there was
    no NASB version for LOGOS.

    QuickVerse with NAB and Nave's Topical Bible is $79. Get on their
    mailing list and they will send you special offers. I got my KJV
    QuickVerse with Hebrew and Greek Dictionary for $19. My wife Beta
    tests for Parsons but we get no break other than what's available to

    is ready for Logos (I'm just not [financially] ready for NAS, or the
    atlas, or the cd-rom, or...... ;-)

    How much is the CD-ROM?

    Well firstly - (huh?) my understanding is that the CD has been delayed
    (again).  When I spoke with their sales guy a few months ago, I believe
    he said it would be available this summer for approximately $500,
    discounted for current LOGOS users (I think by about $150, or very near
    the base price of LOGOS itself).  The disc will likely be fantastic -
    many versions, Hebrew, Greek, & English (some of which I already have
    on my base version), plus atlases, multiple concordances, reference
    works, etc.  I mean really - CD is the ultimate format for Bible study
    as far as I can see....so it will likely be worth the investment
    (espeically since it is designed to be fully compatible with LOGOS). 
    But - funds aren't there yet; which I guess is convenient since the
    product isn't either ;-)

    I've been having problems with the program that pulls verses into the
    notes buffer.  It was working before I went on vacation but has been
    flakey since I returned.  It still prompts me for the book, chapter,
    and verse, but always comes up with either a TPU error or Acts 1:1
    (first book in the KJV file).  Has anyone seen similar behavior before? 
    I can't seem to nail it down.

    I upgraded to VMS 6.1 before vacation and it still worked then.

    my error message looks just like this.  It also looks like I'm missing
    the BIBLEFDV and BIBLE_SERVER logicals, but I've used it before without
    them.

    Either of you got the original kit handy?  My source kit is sitting on
    a tape somewhere.  The error status suggests that the BIBLE.KJV file is
    a different one to the file used by the original design.  Mike, did you
    recently install another copy of the BIBLE.KJV file?

    I accidentally deleted it once and re-copied it.  The logical doesn't
    contain a version number so I'm not sure why that would matter.

    I think I'm onto something here.  It works when I first set default to
    my Bible subdirectory before entering notes... ;-)

 VMS Bible (or if it is even possible)?  I'm using a VT330 Terminal so cut

If you're using CONC to access the Bible, to get the output to  a file 
you'll have to :

$ DEFINE /USER SYS$OUTPUT filename

 -  preceding your conc command.

Yes.  That's what you're using (CONC2, actually).

Andrew has a point.  I'll help you with it tomorrow.  It means
an extra symbol in the LOGIN.COM file and another .COM file.
Relatively painless, and maybe I can organize your LOGIN.COM file

    KJV/Darby is on my system and takes up approximately 6mb of disk space. 
    I would like to buy one of the NAS versions mentioned earlier in this

If you're looking for something quick and simple to run from your own 
account, to find verses from a significant word or two, I think the easiest 
is 'conc', the concordance.

It's been looked after, upgraded etc by a number of people, but I think 
they have all moved on.

I have a version you're welcome to copy.  The instructions are in :

14:26, BUT - He tells us what we NEED to know, not what we WANT to know.

 Even the lower cost versions are quite pricey compared to the
 competition.  I checked the home page and then looked up the
 price page.

It's only that much for the full-blown CD-rom version with four versions of
the original Greek (with scalable font), the Hebrew (with scalable font that
types in right-to-left), plus dictionaries, multiple commentaries,
Augustine's Confessions, a Bible atlas with dozens of maps and a 3D image of
the Holy Land that can be viewed from any angle and scale, plus a few hundred
sundry megabytes of other assorted info.  It's quite a deal.

You can get a special package through CBD, which contains the base package:
NIV, KJV and now NAS versions of the Bible with Strong's expanded
concordance, the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge cross-reference, Nave's
Topical Bible, Tense-Voice-Mood verb parsing, and of course the base software
with all its capabilities, for about $150.  Everything you really need for
serious bible study, it's as good as it gets.

 Word for windows seems to be a better buy to me.

 I tried to install the new online kit on a couple of machines last night,
 no joy.  The installation faults at the same point on the second disk of
 the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on multiple machines, DOS 6.22 and
 Windows 95, and standalong boot and barebones hardware platform.  Binary
 compare of TSK modules with those of a couple of years ago indicate no
 change, which leaves just the new installation program....

 Two folks (at least) copied the kit from me, how have you fared?

I too, tried the kit and got CRC errors installing the following 3 disks :

               TSK2, Scofield, Topics


All the other disks worked fine. To replace the bad ones, I used my old
TSK2, Scofield, and Topics disks, and that worked OK.
Now I can run the Windows version of OLB, and I like it pretty well,
compared to the DOS version.

I also re-copied those bad ones from the Web, and got the same errors. I
think the images on the Web are corrupt.

 If you have copied the kit, please read.

 The author of the the Online Bible software, Larry Pierce, has indicated
 that the source of this particular kit is unknown to him.  He pointed me
 to a known distribution site.

 From review of the packed data, and from communication with Larry, it would
 appear that some of the files packed into the sub-zipped files are
 bogus, some are also out of date.  Because of the security built into the
 install system, embedded virus are blocked and infected modules will not
 install.

 As Dave pointed out in the last reply, several modules have to be replaced.
 Also the windows install is not quite right (I have the newest one now).

 tested from floppies (each small zip file unzipped onto one floppy) and
