394.0. "Scanner advice sought." by CHEFS::TREVENNOR_A (A child of init) Tue Mar 25 1997 23:40

Hi All,
Can anyone advise me what resolution of scanner I will need in
order to be able to legibly scan the small print on CD jackets? I am
aware that the viewing application will need to provide a zoom facility
to look at the smaller printed areas on the artwork, but that's ok. I
just dont have much idea what resolution of scanner would be sufficient
to scan this kind of stuff in. Can anyone advise from experience?

Thanks!
Regards
Alan Trevennor

I opened the bidding at 150, although 100 is almost tolerable

I'll see your 150 and raise to 300.

Seriously though, a random survey of the backs of my CD sleeves shows
quite a range of 'small' type sizes. Are we talking 8 pt or 6 pt or
... ? You'll also have different requirements depending on whether
'legibly' means 'can kind of guess what it says if you squint' or
'looks basically like it does on the physical media.'

One commonly available scanning device with a known resolution is the
fax machine. In 'Fine' mode, fax machines scan and transit at just
about 200 dpi. A quick experiment with your office fax machine could
give you a clue as to how much resolution you'll need.
