| Re .0, i can only speak from practical experience - not from
documentation since i have not looked it up - that we can run the
serial ports on the recent Alpha models up to 115 Kbps. This was done
via a null-modem cable for kernel debugging. Whether this is true for
modem cables, i really cannot tell.

PS: that includes the XL 366, DPW a-series, and APC.

| All our workstation platforms use 82550 compatible serial ports
capable of 115 kbps. Operating system support may vary.
Keep your cable short to avoid trouble. 3 meters (10 feet) should not
be a problem.

| See note 66 in this conference for an old list of supported BAUD rates
on an AlphaStation running various operating systems. That list hasn't
been officially blessed, but it's probably a good start. Support
should only have gotten better since then (about three years ago).

Personally, I'd look at another way to connect these widgets.
(The programs that seem to need to use the fastest asychronous
serial line speeds traditionally never seem quite reliable, and
I've spent more than a few hours chasing communications glitches.)
Can you use a "real" network link for whatever the project is?
