1992.0. "AlphaStation 255/300, PowerStorm 3D30, <CTRL>F2" by GIDDAY::BRODRIBB (Craunching the marmoset) Wed Jun 04 1997 03:39

    New system, AlphaStation 255/300, PowerStorm 3D30 graphics adapter.
    DECwindows Motif V1.2-4, OpenVMS V7.1 installed from scratch using SSB
    CDROM. The only departure from accepting defaults is to decline the new
    Desktop option. Install works fine, AUTOGEN, etc. Problem occurs when I
    reboot for real:

    >>> b dka0
    	normal Alpha bootstrap msg's
    	OpenVMS banner message in blue screen
    	Startup begins
    	.
    	. sometime later
    	.
    	Operator Console blue window appears
    	Finish boot with msg's displayed in Console window
    	Black screen with "X" symbol appears
    	"X" symbol disappears leaving black screen
    	No further activity occurs

    If I then hit <CTRL>F2 to bring back the console followed by another
    <CTRL>F2 then the standard DIGITAL logo and Start Session box appear ...

    I type in my Username - the characters are not echo'd. If I wait a
    long period of time, like many minutes or overnight they eventually
    appear. If I enter <CTRL>F2 <CTRL>F2 they appear immediately.

    I hit <Return> - after several minutes (10) the Password box is
    highlighted and I enter password. Nothing happens - <CTRL>F2 <CTRL>F2
    and I get logged in, well sort of. Normal background and clock thing
    appear momentarily then change to black background - <CTRL>F2<CTRL>F2
    resolves.

    Thereafter any click and point operation requires a <CTRL>F2<CTRL>F2
    operation to produce a timely response. If I create a DECterm then
    typing response is sluggish and output is fast. Spawning a few ICO's
    and they run real fast as expected. Things like MONITOR in a DECterm
    are fine.

    I'm stumped! Have I got a hardware problem? Some weird keyboard-mouse
    interaction? Loosing interrupts?

    Any ideas will be very welcome ... this is a real pain!

    Thanks for reading this,

1992.1Latest patch appliedGIDDAY::BRODRIBBCraunching the marmosetWed Jun 04 1997 04:063
    Also I installed the latest Motif patch, ALPMOTF01_U4012, but this had
    no effect on the problem ...

1992.2you probably need the Open3D kitWRKSYS::RICHARDSONWed Jun 04 1997 10:594
    Did you install Open3D? You should... Try that and let us know what
    occurs then.

1992.3Things To Try...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Jun 04 1997 11:1618
   Log in and run a few passes of AUTOGEN with feedback -- there is
   definitely something out of whack on this system, but I'd start
   looking at the parameters first, then at the hardware.

   If the problem persists after the AUTOGEN, check the keyboard settings
   in the session manager, and try swapping the keyboard and the mouse
   for known good ones.

   Check the error logs. Any errors?

   Open3D is not required for the PowerStorm 3D30 (PBXGB-AA, TGA2) on
   OpenVMS Alpha V7.1, though it will likely get you a newer driver.
   (This new driver may help, it may not...)

   (I know the non-Open3D PowerStorm 3D30 OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 DECwindows
   Motif 1.2-4-with-ECO combination works...)

1992.4Known SCSI bug?STAR::jacobi.zko.dec.com::jacobiPaul A. Jacobi - OpenVMS Systems GroupWed Jun 04 1997 14:257
There's a patch for V7.1 SCSI drivers. I believe this is documented in my
note 1776.
