1984.0. "AlphaStation 255 and DE450-CA" by KAOFS::E_BELANGER (CSC/Network Support (Hull, Canada)) Tue May 27 1997 13:31

Hi,

I need to know exactly how to configure a DE450-CA in a AlphaStation 255.

Config:

ALphaStation 255
SRM = 6.3-5
VMS = 6.2-1h3
Patch Installed = ALPLAN04_062 and ALPBOOT08_062
Ethernet card = DE450-CA

The customer set the mode to AUI, BNC and Twisted for EWB0_mode

In NCP he set the circuit and line state off for EWA-0
       he set the circuit and line state on for EWA-1

Result: With the three different mode (AUI, BNC, Twisted) is has
	"line syncronization lost" when decnet starts.

    Here are somethings to check first:

    	1. EWA0 and EWB0 under SRM may not equal to EWA0 and
           EWB0,respectively, under VMS. I.e. EWA0 under SRM can be EWB0
           under VMS.

    	2. When DECnet is not started, use DEFINE instead of SET under NCP.

    	3. Make sure the DE450-CA is not in PCI/ISA comb slot.

    	4. Make sure the jumper for AUI and BNC on DE450-CA are set correctly.

Hi,

1) Under VMS when he does show device/full he saw:

	$ Show dev/full EWA0   ---> TULIP

	$ Show dev/full EWB0   ---> DE435 (but the module is realy a DE450-CA)

2) I will ask him to use DEFINE in NCP.

3) I will check the slot with the customer.

4) There are no jumper on the DE450-CA ---> Etherworks Turbo PCI 10 User
					      Information manual (EK-DE450-OM)

Ref: .-1

On console the customer did a show config:

>>> Show Config

PCI slot 13 DECchip 21041 Network controler

I though it was suppose to show DE450

The customer also tried different slots, no go.

    Sorry for the mis-info of jumper setup on DE450...I should exam the
    card before answering the note.

    I put a DE450 (21041) on slot 13 (top of 3 PCI slots) of AS255 with VMS
    6.2-1h3 and SRM 6.4-1 and onboard 21040. On SRM, the DE450 is
    identified as EWB0 with SHOW DEVICE or SHOW CONFIG command, but it was
    configured as EWA0 with line/circuit EWA-0 by VMS. You can identify it
    with Ethernet Address with either MCR NCP SHOW KNOW LINE CHARACTER or
    MCR LANCP SHOW DEVICE/PARAMETER.

    BTW, on SRM, the EWB0_MODE is set to AUTO-NEGOTIATE.

    One more thing needs to add to .4, where the console parameter
    BUS_PROBE_ALGORITHM is set to OLD. If BUS_PROBE_ALGORITHM
    is set to NEW, then SRM will identify DE450 as EWA0 which agrees with
    VMS.

Hi,

Fix: The customer upgrade the SRM firmware version to 6.4 from CD 3.9

The device on the console is showing EWB0 as DECchip 21041 Network controler,
BUS_PROBE_ALGORITHM is set to New.
VMS ncp see only one line EWA-0

The DE450 works Fine since !

Thank for all reply,

Eric
