On a current sales call I was posed the question what do you get extra for the addtional 6K ($AU) on the 4d50t. All the tech specs indicate they are very similar in capabilities additional features in terms of performance in some areas. Where does this performance come from? As memory, etc. appears the same. 1975.1 | Clock speed | PKOPW1::DOTY | Russ Doty, Graphics and Multimedia | Fri May 16 1997 10:34 | 7 |
The 4D50T has roughly twice the performance of the 4D40T. The major difference between the two cards is the internal clock speed, plus different device identification information. They are identical in terms of features and capabilities. Think of it as the difference between a 333 MHz alpha and a 600 MHz Alpha...
1975.2 | Real-world applications? | OSLLAV::JENSH | Jens Holwech, SBU Workstation Sales Support, Norway (DTN 872-8543) | Tue May 20 1997 04:00 | 22 |
Re .1: Watch it, Russ! A fairly reputable source (yourself...) recently verified my own field experience: Very few real-world applications show anything but a very minor performance difference between the 4D40T/4D50T (and even the 4D60T). Yes, the CDRS Viewperf numbers for the 4D50T are almost twice those reported for the 4D40T. However, the application used in creating the CDRS test, Pro/ENGINEER, does not show this. I also recently ran an informal test with a Unigraphics customer: Still not worth the extra cash (I'm still waiting to do a side-by-side, timed test, but these machines & boards just never stay in the office long enough...). I'd love to show people the "double performance" of the 4D50T, but please tell me how to do this! You mentioned Unigraphics as one application which would benefit from using the 4D50T. I'd like to know which functions to use in UG to demonstrate this (a macro file would be very nice!). Also any other application driven performance demonstrations would be very welcome! Regards, Jens
1975.3 | 4D40T vs 4D50T vs 4D60T Testing that was done using Unigraphics | WRKSYS::VOWLES | Tue May 20 1997 10:27 | 84
Hi Jens, here is the results of testing I have done with Unigraphics and the Powerstorm boards. This benchmark is mostly graphical. Hope this helps.
