1971.0. "PowerStorm 4D40T and AlphaStation 200 ?" by BLOFLY::SMITHP (Beware the knights who say "NT"...) Wed May 14 1997 22:06

Can a 4D40T be installed in an AlphaStation 200 4/233 running NT ?

Is there a minimum firmware revision ?

Could this be installed as a supported option ??

Thanks,

Peter Smith.

I don't see why not, just grab the latest driver.

1971.2not supported howeverWRKSYS::CHALTASBasketball is a peaceful planet!Thu May 15 1997 10:425
It isn't supported (AlphaStation 200s were discontinued before the
PS 4D40T ever shipped), but it's likely to work. It's unlikely to
impress anyone with its performance in this system.

1971.3not supported, but does (did?) workWRKSYS::RICHARDSONThu May 15 1997 10:575
We have run CatEyes boards in Mustang systems, so it does (or did,
anyhow) work, but this combination isn't supported. I. e., you're on
your own, if you want to run this.

Like everyone said, Cateyes is not officially supported on Mustang
or Avanti systems. However, much of the development was done on
Avantis and at least one of the graphics product managers runs a Cateyes
in a Mustang on a daily basis. Note that this combination never went
through hardware qualification so many combinations of boards in
the systems have never been tried.

1971.5Be nice, Garry!PKOPW1::DOTYRuss Doty, Graphics and MultimediaMon May 19 1997 10:2921
Hey Garry, be nice -- I've got an AlphStation 250, not a 200! It was a
very nice machine in its day (which was about April 30, 1968...)

A quick bit of background: qualifying a graphics device is done for
each specific background. We have a formal hardware and software
qualification process, that involves considerable time and money for
each system qualified. Because of this, we choose the specific
platforms that will be qualified; this is based on a combination of
technical, business, and product fit considerations.

We first qualify the platforms that are a good technical fit, are going
to be current when we ship, and that represent the most volume. We
then go down a list of target platforms. We do not typically qualify
platforms that are not a technical fit, or that will not be shipping in
volume when the graphics is available.

The AlphaStation 200 was not qualified because of performance and
because it was effectively replaced with the 250 and 255.

Having said all of this; to the best of our knowledge it works. If
a problem should turn up, it IS an unsupported system.
1971.6Thanks !BLOFLY::SMITHPBeware the knights who say "NT"...Mon May 19 1997 21:5912
Thanks guys ! We'll give them the option, but also push the DPW 433-au
with the 4D40T as the way to go.

b.t.w. We benched a 255/233 with 4D40T running Pro-Engineer under Unix
for a different customer some time ago, and the 3D performance for
medium-complexity models was quite reasonable - and vastly better than
the 3D30. These are great cards !

Thanks,

Peter.
