1951.0. "Multiple Video Terminal" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Kelvin Tan) Mon May 05 1997 13:35

Have a customer looking at a Control System, that requires multiple
graphics monitors from a single system. From the SOC for AlphaStation,
it is stated that up to 3 are supported if the same video cards are
used, for both DIGITAL UNIX and WNT platforms.

Issue1:
However ,I was told that the multiple monitor support was broken in
WNT4.0. Could someone please confirm or deny that rumor. If it is
true, is there someway of working around that (like 3rd party stuff)?

Issue2:
Also is there any way to have up to 6 monitors on a system. If the
number of PCI slots is a problem, he is willing to go to a AlphaServer.

Appreciate any kind of assistance.

Multi-monitor support was indeed "broken" by NT 4.0. Although NT V3.51
never officially supported it from Microsoft, the "hack" that we used
for TGA/TGA2 no longer works on NT 4.0 due to NT changes.
Matrox has been able to work out another "hack" and their stuff supports
multi-monitors, although I don't know the specifics.

1951.2Matrox Millenium, alternative to AlphaServerBBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Tue May 06 1997 08:4414
Matrox have a specific driver for their Millenium card which works
multihead on NT V4. Freely available from Matrox for Intel. Talk to Al
Hopkins @ PKO about availability on Alpha.

Multihead is still generally safer on UNIX at the moment.

You can get more than 3 heads without going to an AlphaServer, in
Digital's own Digital Modular Computing Component boxes, which are made
and sold by the Embedded+Realtime bit of the SBU to the OEM market
(including companies in process automation etc). There's more info in
the Integrated Repository or at http://www.digital.com/info/oem

It's been rumored that Microsoft will officially support multiple monitors
with Memphis (Windows98?) and NT 5.0.

1951.5NT and multihead - are they a good match ?BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Wed May 07 1997 07:4412
The rumour which preceded the "multihead in V5" rumour was "multihead
support will be in a Service Pack for V4". So far as I know, these are
just rumours, not commitments. And when V5 comes out, will graphics
drivers have to be re-written again (like they were for V4) as part of
    the multihead support.

Some of my customers where multihead is *essential* are re-evaluating
their plans to use NT for display stations. It's just too risky for
    them (especially on Alpha :-(

The last I had heard (WinHEC in April), Microsoft was
promising multi-headed *2D* support in NT 5.0. Multi-headed
*3D* support (OpenGL, etc) was still not committed (but
under discussion).
