1948.0. "AS600 fails POST on e5" by LOTIMA::P_MORRIS () Thu May 01 1997 05:49

    Has anybody got any ideas on the following:

    I have just been to site on an Alphastation 600 5/333 with a memory
    fault, which turned out to be a bent pin in one of the simm sockets!

    However while on site we noticed that intermittently,approx 1 time out
    of 5 ,when the system is powered up,it runs up ok, until it gets to
    e5 on the final countdown.

    At this point the VGA screen goes back into power save mode & there is
    no response from the keyboard.The system is still powered up & the OCP
    has "e5." displayed.

    I can't find any reference to which test e5 is in any of the
    documentation.What is happening while e5 is displayed ?

    If the reset button is pushed ,or the system is power cycled it will
    come up OK.

    The config of the machine is:
    ============================
    AS600 5/333  SRM v6.3
    MEM bank0 64Mb (DEC memory 60ns)
    MEM bank1 256Mb (Dataram Memory 60ns)
    MEM bank2 128Mb (Dataram Memory 60ns)
    Cache     4Mb   (In 3 simms)

    PCI options
    ===========
    VGA
    KZPSM
    KZPSC
    KZPSC

    So my questions are:
    	1.What does e5 mean
    	2.Are there any rules regarding largest/smallest memory in 1st bank

    Regards

There are no rules regarding populating largest/smallest memory in the first
bank.
The only restriction is that within a bank they must be all the same.

	e5 represents the cia dma test. Could be the cia has a
	problem. TO confirm this , you can run the cia dma test
	at the console prompt

	run the script  >>> cia_test
