1942.0. "AS255 console hang!" by CSC32::R_IVERS () Fri Apr 25 1997 11:19

I have a AlphaStation 255 running WNT 4.0. It runs the OS just fine but
seems to have a problem at console level. It is currently running
AlphaBios V5.10. My problem is this:

When I boot the system it init's OK, then init's the SCSI bus OK. If I
then get into setup with F2 and try to use either "Display System
Configuration" or "Hard Disk Setup" it just hangs. Both these options
worked in the past. I have tried isolating it by removing my external
SCSI bus with no luck. I can get to other AlphaBios options with no
problem, like "CMOS setup", "About AlphaBIOS" etc...

Anybody have any ideas as to what "Display System Configuration" and
"Hard Disk Setup" are trying to do that cause them to hang?

    Thanks,

    Rodney

When you choose "Display System Configuration" and "Hard Disk Setup", the
firmware will attempt to spin up the hard disks in the machine. If you
upgrade to firmware to the latest release version, V5.21, it should solve
your problem.

1942.2Need pointer to firmware!CSC32::R_IVERSFri Apr 25 1997 12:579
    Re: -1

Would it be possible for you to give me a pointer to the firmware ans a
quick overview of the upgrade procedure. I have never done a console
firmware upgrade on the Alpha before.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Rodney

if you have a pc and internet access can go to the firmware web page

    ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/Alpha/firmware/v3.9/alpha255/

theres a file there named as255_v7_5.exe pull it down to fat
formatted floppy and name it fwupdate.exe on the floppy

then boot console into alphabios and F2 for setup take the
    update alphabios option

should start reading floppy and reboot system then come to this prompt

    UPD>

    do these commands

    UPD>update alphabios
         update alphabios y/n yes
............ dont power fail system during this procedure
         complete
    UPD>verify alphabios
         okay
    UPD>exit

power fail system to make new alphabios take affect

now alphabios should be version v5.21

if dont have access to internet then my rd group in colorado has
firmware cd ver 3.9 you could probally borrow for a couple of hours.
