1917.0. "Block size is NOT 512 bytes for device" by CSC32::S_GRIMMER () Tue Apr 08 1997 19:27

    I have an Alphastation 255. 1 gig internal drive, 1 internal cdrom,
    3 external drives. It currently has SRM console installed. I need
    to use the firmware update cd to install AlphaBios V3.9. I am
    unable to boot any cd in the cdrom. I have tried V3.6, V3.9 and
    vms 7.1 for the alpha. I have also tried 2 different cdroms.
    I have also tried to boot the cd with the cdrom as the only
    device on the scsi bus. Nothing I do seems to fix the following
    error.

    Block size is NOT 512 bytes for device dkaX00...

    I also verified the switches on the M/B, I tried resetting the
    bios to default.

    My next step is to try to mscp serve a cd to the box in a desperate
    attempt to get it up.

    What should I try next? Any Ideas? Please Help....

    when you say you tried two different cdroms, do you mean two different
    drives or two different cd's?

    I'd try a different drive....
1917.2sector size selection syndrome?WRKSYS::HOUSEKenny House, Workstations EngineeringWed Apr 09 1997 08:1614
    RE .0 - AlphaStation 255 CD-ROM problem: Block size is NOT 512 bytes
    for device dkaX00...

    Has this drive ever worked?

    There's probably a jumper or a switch on the CD-ROM drive that selects
    either 512- or 2048-Byte operation. The CD disks are all the same
    (2048-Byte sectors), the drive just fakes the 512-Byte mode to make
    some drivers happy.

    If it's not obvious what to twiddle once you get the drive out for
    inspection, get back here with the manufacturer and model number.

>>>show device

If the device is "RRD45" then it is in 512 mode, If it say "toshiba" or
"sony" then it is probably in 2K mode. If the system was ever used with
NT, then the jumper is probably in the 2K mode.

Doesn't the SRM console issue a SET MODE SCSI command to force the device
in 512byte mode? Perhaps this command is failing because the device did
not accept the command.

1917.4Block size not 512 bytes for dka400CSC32::S_GRIMMERWed Apr 09 1997 19:4112
    For clarification I used multiple CDROM drives and multiple cd's.
    The drive I have is a Toshiba XM5401B/D1. It has a pcmode/digital work
    station switch. When in pc mode the computer continously reboots, when
    in digital workstation mode it boots to srm >>> but I still get the
    'block size is NOT 512 bytes for dkaX00...'. The drive came from the
    factory with the jumper set to digital workstation mode.

    I can't seem to find any set mode scsi command there is a scsi_fast
    switch I have tried that switch set to 0 and 1 no effect on problem.

    The device show up as a rrd45.

    Just for yucks. Make sure you do not have a improper SCSI bus
    configuration - too long, or bad termination. Unplug the external
    cable, and try it. Maybe you are getting flakey communications with
    the CD.

1917.6scsi setup, block size not 512 bytesCSC32::S_GRIMMERFri Apr 11 1997 00:146
    Current setup of 255 scsi bus.
    No externel connections. One internal rz28d, One toshiba cdrom, one
    terminator. I have tried it with only the cdrom on the scsi bus.
    I have no way to test the scsi or do i?
    I tried another scsi cable and that didn't work either.

    Block size is not 512 bytes for device dkxxx
    Problem turned out to be conflict with video card.
