1912.0. "remote console for alphastationn 500/400" by MAIL1::GHAHRAMANI () Wed Apr 02 1997 21:35

    I have a customer who has an alphastation 500 400 MHZ system that he
    wants to be able to dial-in remotely and be able to act as a console
    remotely. That is, he wants to be able to boot the system remotely.
    From all previous notes, it seems this functionality is not supported
    on the alphastations, is this indeed true?

    Thanks,

    Forough

1912.1use a UPS to power cycle the AS500?WRKSYS::SCHUMANNThu Apr 03 1997 09:4412
It may not be too difficult to configure a system that does this. For example,
the following config may work:

AS500/400
UPS with serial line control
Modem
2:1 asynch mux (e.g. from Black Box)

You talk to the UPS to power cycle the AS500. Then you can operate
the console through the AS500 serial port.

	modem support has been built in to the console. SO you will
	have to connect a modem with auto answer to the serial port.

	The baud is set to 9600. Once you connect , you will get the
	>>> prompt.

It also depends on the OS. The ability to use a modem as a console device
was added to Digital UNIX in V4.0B.
