| Digital UNIX does not support the Motion 331 card. I'm not even positive what
that card is.
However, the PBXGB-AA is also known as the PowerStorm 3D30, alias TGA2. That
card is supported on Digital UNIX.
If your customer has a need for new lowend graphics cards (ie, commodity cards)
on Digital UNIX, please let us know. We're currently discussing what cards
need to be supported in the future to meet the customer needs on Digital UNIX.

Irene, I think that the S3 card is actually called the Motion 331 by
the board maker. You see it briefly flash during BIOS init.

According to www.nine.com,
9FX Vision 330 = S3 Trio64
9FX Motion 331 = S3 Trio64V+
9FX Reality 332 = S3d ViRGE

| Sorry, I stand corrected...
That card is supported by Digital UNIX, but you will need V4.0B.

| FWIW, Number Nine (they're in touble...) just lowered the MSRP on
the Motion331 to $99.

1909.6 | same drivers for PB2GA-JA <-> PB2GA-JD ? | UTOPIE::OETTL | hide bug until worst time | Fri May 02 1997 08:00 | 10 |
| Hello,
my customer has about 35 AS255 with a mixture of PB2GA-JA/JD cards.
He wanted the same graphics cards in all his systems, but the PB2GA-JA cards
are no longer available, so we got -JD's with the last shipment.
Can the PB2GA-JA be interchanged with a PB2GA-JD without changing/rebuilding
the Unix kernel, assuming I will have at minimum dUNIX V4.0B?

The S3 Trio64 and the S3 Trio V+ are supposed to be interchangeable,
and at least on OpenVMS, they have not asked for any software changes,
so I expect the same would be true on UNIX.
However, I was under the impression that the workstation group had
declined the move to the V+ chip and had retired the 3D10 as a result.
My belief was that the V+ was only available for the servers. Unless
the cards are being ordered ala-cart, there may be FCC qual issues if
the workstation group has not officially tested it.

Good to hear.

Oops, you are right. The systems arrived with PBXGB-AA inside, which then were
swapped to PB2GA-JD's.
...declined the move to the V+ chip...
Hmmm, so the PB2GA-JD is not officially supported in the Alphastation255?

Someone can give you an official answer, the business manager of the
group told me a month or so ago that they were not going to use the V+
and would retire the 3D10. The server group, which wants cheaper
graphics than the 3D30 for it's low-end has qual'ed and is shipping the
V+ as a replacement.
There is some rumour of another "commodity" card in the works for
workstations, but I have no idea about the price, performance, and O/S
support (well, I'm pretty sure they don't want to do VMS).
