1903.0. "Alphastation 255: no @ with LK46W-AG" by MUNICH::AUEROCHS (Stephan Auerochs, CSC Munich) Wed Mar 19 1997 09:44

A customer has an Alphastation 255 with keyboard LK46W-AG (german version). Show
config gives srm: V6.2-2.
On the consoleprompt and also after booting OpenVMS he can't type "@". Normally
you type <compose char/Gruppenumschaltung> + <q> to get "@" with german
keyboard, but he gets the string "LK411" or "PCXAL", the same string he sets in
the console variable kbd_hardware_type.
Also he gets this string if he types F3.
You can imagine that this is a big problem with using OpenVMS. I have neither
Alphastation 255 nor a LK46W-AG to examine this behaviour, so I need hints for
solving this problem.

Thanks!

1903.1Right Language and Keyboard Settings?XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Mar 19 1997 13:065
   What are the DECwindows Motif (CDE?) language and keyboard settings?
   (This looks more like a DECwindows question, and might be better suited
   to the folks over in the DECwindows conference.)

1903.2Be sure to configure Motif keymapSTAR::jacobi.zko.dec.com::jacobiPaul A. Jacobi - OpenVMS Systems GroupWed Mar 19 1997 13:0913
Make sure you configure Motif to select the proper keyboard map. Motif
support about a half-dozen different Austrian/German keyboard mappings.
I'm not sure which one works the best for LK46W-AG, but suggest that you
try them all and see which setting works the best.

Also you can use the crude tools XEV and XMODMAP to manually re-assign
particular keys.

1903.3console/vms-prompt problemMUNICH::AUEROCHSStephan Auerochs, CSC MunichFri Mar 21 1997 06:0917
This problem is not a Motif/DECwindows problem. You cannot type the "@" at the
console prompt or OPA0.
New facts: The customer told me he already gets the "LK411"-string if he types
the compose key ("Gruppenumschaltung"), and if he types "q", then the "q"
character appears too; so the compose key does not behave as usual.
After upgrading with firmware V3.8, the behaviour changed: now with typing
compose key nothing appears but an additional "q"-key still gives "q".
He found that he can produce the "@" character with typing "Alt function"
("Zusatzfunktion") + "q" key. Further tests show that the german special
characters (umlaute) also give other results as expected, for example "d"
instead of "".
I supposed that it may be a hardware problem with the keyboard because of the
irregular keymapping and suggested replacing the keyboard. I'm waiting for the
result.

Thanks!
Stephan

    When in console mode, the console firmware program is doing all
    of the KB handling and translation.
