| The S3 server DDX does not support any other pixel depth than 8. The
best you can do is change the resolution, and the refresh rate.

| How do you change the resolutions and refresh rates?

I can't remember the sytax offhand, you do it in the command to
start the X server on UNIX. It should be in the documentation.

| can further explain what you mean by the S3 DDX, is that the Xdriver
for s3? Is this the same for WindowsNT?
Are you sure?
1024*768= 786432 * 2 = 1572864 < 2MB.
The documentation also talks about higher color support.

Graphics on X11 are supported by a combination of device driver, which
handles init, and some other timing critical functions, and a Device
Dependent X11 module that is a DLL called by the XServer to actually
draw on the device.
The S3 server DDX for Unix and VMS *does not have* the logic to use the
S3 in any other pixel depth than 8 bits. The hardware itself is
capable of multiple pixel depths, including both 16 and 24 bits. The
Server drawing code does *not* support it.
NT does not use X11. They use a driver supplied by S3 which supports
all (or most) of the pixel depths, resolutions, and refresh rates.
If you have S3 documentation for Unix that states that it does pixel
depths > 8. I'd like to see it.

| I should have said Powerstorm Marketing Brochure, and under NT I guess
that is true. Thanks for the explanation.
Documentation/Marketing Brochure same thing...:-)

BTW - the intent in supporting the S3, and other low-end commodity
chips was to provide a cheap low-end offering for servers. The
workstation group chose to also include the S3 as the low-end of their
Open3D offerings. There was never a demand for pixel depths > 8,
since that space is covered by the TGA & TGA2 based cards.
BTW - my understanding is that the S3 offering on workstations (3D10)
has been discontinued as the version of the chip went EOL. The S3
chip/card will continue to be sold on some server systems, who have
gone to the replacement chip.

| RE: Support of depths > 8 on Digital UNIX
There is some work underway to determine the possibility of adding this for a
new version of Digital UNIX that is currently being developed. If the project
pans out, the support is currently planned for S3, ATI and any new VGA cards
that may be supported.

| My understanding that the workstation group is dropping support for the
3D10. The 3D30 ($795) will be the lowest end graphic card available
for a workstation (way too high). It didn't sould like they had any
other low end card in the works?
I believe we need support in UNIX for a low end card with better color
support.
