1882.0. "AS600 Graphics Problem" by CSC32::STRING () Wed Mar 05 1997 18:18

    Hello,
I am working with a field engineer whos' customer is having a
graphics problem on an AlphaStation 600. They are running OVMS 6.2 and
we believe the graphics adapter is the PowerStorm. They are using the
grachics adapter as the console device. The problem is, after
the customer does a control/s (xoff) and control/q (xon), while the
system is booting, the console is dead. No OPCOM messages, DECwindows
doesn't start and they must reboot to get the console back. At first I
thought this may be a DECwindows problem, but now I'm not so sure. Has
anyone seen this type of behavior? Could this be a hardware/firmware
issue or software issue? The customer states this occurs on more than
one machine, so I believe the actual hardware is okay, but the
hardware/firmware or software may be an issue. My other quwstion would
be what software component is controlling the graphics adapter at this
point (VMS, DECwindows or somethig else)? Any input would be
    appreciated. Thank You

First, "Powerstorm" is a meaningless description, since the workstation
folks market several radically different designs under that name, you
need the actual model number (or even the graphics chip/card maker).

Prior to DECwindows starting, the console I/O is done through OPDRIVER
(as a terminal port driver) using console callbacks. XON/XOFF are
handled in the standard way. It's always worked for me, but then again,
    I don't have a AS600 and V6.2.

We made some improvements in this area in both
sys$cpu_routines_0f05.exe and in sys$opdriver.exe. The opdriver fix is
definitely available; I'll have to check and see about the as600
specific fix. It was included in 6.2-1hx if the customer can upgrade to
that, as well as in 7.1.

    Fredrick and Sue,
Thank You for your replies. I have spoken with the
local F/S engineer and he is going to have the customer work with the
software folks. I don't know if the customer can upgrade VMS, but maybe
the opdriver and cpu_routines can be loaded onto her system. I
apologize for the lack of specifics on the graphics module type, next
time I'll try to have the person do a clue config from sda. Thanks
    again for your support.
    				Regards,
