1870.0. "36pin to 25pin Parralle cable issue." by SWAM1::POIANI_MI () Tue Feb 25 1997 13:20

    I have a customer with an Alphastation 255/300. They recently purchased
    an Apple Laserwriter 16/600ps. They would like to hook it up to the
    Alpha directly to the Parrallel port.

    The Laserwriter has a 36 Pin Centronics type female connector on it. We
    have a 25 Pin female connector on our box.

    Do we need a special cable built, and what should we ask for. Any help
    would be greatly appreciated.

1870.1The cable is the easy part...WRKSYS::SCHUMANNTue Feb 25 1997 16:015
You need an ordinary printer cable, with a 25-pin male at one end, and a
centronics connector at the other. You will also need a driver for whichever
OS you are using.

1870.2Device Integration Not Free...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Feb 26 1997 09:1325
: Do we need a special cable built, and what should we ask for. Any help
:    would be greatly appreciated.

   Look in the DECconnect catalog for information on adapters and
   cables.  Also check http://triumf.reo.dec.com/tech/cables.htm.

   Be aware that OpenVMS requires DCPS for support of Postscript
   printers, and DCPS does not (yet) support the parallel interface,
   nor does it support LPR/LPD connections to a Postscript printer.
   (DCPS expects LAT or serial connections -- for information on the
   DCPS, see HUMANE::POSTSCRIPT_PRINTING.)

   Most Apple Printers support a serial connection, this would likely
   be preferable to the parallel connection, as it can be supported with
   DCPS, and (I know) there are cables and DECconnect adapters available
   for the Apple serial DIN plug.

   (If this is OpenVMS, there's a new hunk of documentation going
   into the `Raven' release manuals on hooking up modems and such
   to OpenVMS via DECconnect, I've got a copy I can send to you.)

   [This integration work really isn't something we should be doing
   for free -- this process can get expensive and can potentially be
   rather time-consuming...]
