Hi' folks,

we have a Customer which has an Alphastation 255 4/233 with repeat
machine check 670 660 type. 
First we changed the cpu fan that was blowed and the mchk 660 never appened.
After one week mchk 670 appens again.
We changed the system board last week on 19 February, but the machine check
appened again on 24 February.
Can someone help me to decode these errors ?

I have tried to run the Machine Check Decoder Program V. 3.5, but the result
was that the machine check I entered is "unknown". 

Here is some information from DECevent and the crash-data about the 
machine checks...

    it looks like you changed the system module which would have given you 
    new cpu and cache. you have the newest srm console code. maybe memory 
    problem? are you sure the fan is blowing the correct way over the cpu 
    chip? its possible to have fan blowing backwards in as255? if so break 
    off the tab on fan 2 pin connector and flip it around so fans blows over 
    the cpu chip heatsink instead.

Hi Leonardo,

Would you describe a little more about the problem you had with the 
CPU fan?

What is the environment like where the machine is sitting? 

Is the system positioned so the air can freely flow in the front and out the
left side and back? 

Are there any cables inside the box that could be impeding the airflow? 

In dusty environments, sometimes dust can build up in front of the CPU fan 
on the chassis (You can pull the front bezel off to check this).

The power supply also contains a fan. Is it working?

The CPU fan automatically speeds up as the temperature increases. Has the
customer reported hearing differences in the fan noise?

The problem with the reversed fan power polarity was on some of the 250 (M3) 
systems. I don't think the 255 (LX3+) had this problem.

    Hi[ Terry and Jim,
    thanks for your replies. Last Friday, we went to Customer site,
    and monitored the AC power to the Alphastation whit a B.M.I.
    We mesured it the first time the problem appened, but all was
    ok. This time, instead, we found some power specification that
    weren't in the range of tollerance for the system.
    Specially the vaule of the input current was 250V and there was
    some spike between the Neutral and the Ground.
    So we ask to Customer to install an UPS or something like to 
    set the AC power to the right range.
