1861.0. "AlphaStation 500/400 and /500 Sound card" by KAOFS::E_BELANGER (Canadian Remote Diagnostic Center) Thu Feb 20 1997 17:41

Hi,

A customer received 10 AlphaStation 500/400 and /500 with sound card included.

He does not see the sound card from the console prompt (show config).

Is it going to be seen only by the drivers?
How should he configure it with the ECU?
What model to specify?

Does the AS500/400 have an EISA bus? No? Then what would the EISA
configuration utility help with? If the card is a ISA card (and I'll
take a wild guess that it is) it needs to be added using the ISACFG
command. I believe there is a short-cut command to "add_sound".

Bret has a tiny little EISA connecting up the "junk io" - I think that
means keyboard, mouse, etc. You can't plug anything else into it. You
fix it up (if it needs fixing) by saying something like

    	>>>fix_eisa_config

say >>>help and look for a command something like that.

As to sound advice, try visiting

    	http://altavista.notes.lkg.dec.com:8000/cgi-bin/query?pg=q

to see what advice might be out there for configuration - for example,
    a query on

    	+"sound card" +unix

    brings up 200 hits.

You can use the ecu utility in srm or the fix_eisa_config.
If the fix does not work, use ecu.

Do an init before running a ecu. you will need the ecu config
floppy disk which is probably shipped with the OS .

	>>> ecu

will search the floppy and list all the know adapters. You have
to select microsoft sound card option and put it in slot 1. Save
	the config and repower system.

Um, .3, your reply is of great interest to me - we seem to have given
opposite advice on three points. Must be my ignorance, but just to be
    sure...

    1. "put it in slot 1" - does a 500 have an eisa bus with multiple slots
that you can plug things into? The AlphaStation500 Service
Guide says "no EISA/ISA slots are available".

    2. "microsoft sound card" - isn't that the NT recipe? I sent the
basenoter off looking for other recipes because the base note says
"the" console command "show config", which I imagined must mean
the system is using Unix or VMS.

    3. "If the fix does not work, use ecu" - Rich Dischler, engineering
manager for the Alphastation 500, said not to do this:
    	 	Alphastation500 note 27.6
    		Alphastation 1270.5
    		Alphastation 1460.1

Is his advice, perhaps, out of date?

	>1. "put it in slot 1" - does a 500 have an eisa bus with multiple slots
        >that you can plug things into? The AlphaStation500 Service
        >Guide says "no EISA/ISA slots are available".

The 500 does not have eisa bus for users to plug in. By "selecting slot 1"
I meant , to use the slot 1 option in the ecu menu. There is no other
slots an eisa option can be connected to.

	>2. "microsoft sound card" - isn't that the NT recipe? I sent the
        >basenoter off looking for other recipes because the base note says
        >"the" console command "show config", which I imagined must mean
        >the system is using Unix or VMS.

In the ecu list of devices , the sound card option that has to be
selected is the microsoft sound card. Once ecu has written the slot
data into the eisa nvram, the OS (vms & unix) will recognize it as
	a sound card.
