Upgrading Digital UNIX will not solve the problem.
The patch referenced in 1397.38 might solve the problem.
If you're hearing something like white noise, this should fix it.
There is also an hardware ECO relating to audio. Look elsewhere
in this conference. This problem sounds more like distortion, I
believe.
>>> second question :

1859.2 | AS255 hardware eco == REV D. module | BGSDEV::CDANCY | Chip Dancy | Thu Feb 20 1997 09:50 | 4 |
| If the motherboard module is less than rev d., a hardware eco or replacement
for a rev d module is needed to fix distorted audio. In addition, the
software patch is needed if the rev of the AD1845 chip on that module is greater
than 0.6 (last two digits on last line of the chip).

1859.3 | there's no hardware fix for distortion | WRKSYS::SCHUMANN | | Thu Feb 20 1997 21:28 | 5 |
| re -.1
The 255 audio hardware ECO does not fix distortion. It fixes noise, i.e coupling
of 5V power noise caused by disk activity, etc. into the audio outputs.

| Hello,
"white noise", One of the our two problems was solved by the patch kit,
which is at multimedia_service notes 354.38.
we have still the second problem.
I see notes 354.* in bgsdev::multimedia_services but it was not enough
for me to understand clearly.
once more question.
DECsound basic function is that we can only record and play back CD music
as tape recorder. is it right ?
If we want to listen to CD music through headphone jack on system back
panel, do i have to order sound card optionally?
best regards

| Under Unix and VMS, there's no software support for routing
Line In (where the CD is connected) through the mixer to the outputs.
Windows NT does support the mixer with the standard software.
