1840.0. "Should an AlphaStation 600 be able to recognize an RZ56 ?" by PTHRED::VIVENEY (Bob Viveney) Tue Feb 04 1997 13:45

Hi
	I have a AlphaStation 600 5/266. Firmware rev is 6.0.
	I used the backpanel scsi connector to connect an expansion
	box with 2 RZ56 disks followed by a DAT tape drive. (50 pin)

	The system does not seem to recognize the 2 RZ56 disks. It does
	see the tape. It does not appear to be a conflict in scsi ids.

	Using 'show device' at the console level verifies that the 2
	RZ28s internal (scsi 0 & 1), cd drive (scsi 5) and tape drive
	(scsi 3) are seen. There is a terminator in place.

	If I try to boot Unix with the power on at the expansion box, it
	repeatedly fails. Turning power off allows the boot to succeed.

	Then trying to mount the RZ56 disk will immediately crash the
	system.

	The disks are formatted for UFS and were used this way with an Avanti.

	Should this work with an Alcor?

	Thanks,
	Bob

This seems to a repeat (mostly of topic 1748) which has no replies.

Note that RZ5? are SCSI I devices and it looks like ISP firmware
doesn't like them.
1840.2Get Field Service To Check ConfigXDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Feb 05 1997 11:243
   The poster already received offline mail from various folks -- this
   looks like a hardware or SCSI-connection-related problem.
1840.3KZPAA-AA adapter is one solution.BASEX::EISENBRAUNJohn EisenbraunWed Feb 05 1997 12:235
    We've been using a borrowed KZPAA-AA (PCI TO SCSI HOST BUS ADAPTER) to
    connect our RZ56 and RZ57 drives. It seems to work without any
    problems on OpenVMS V6.2 and Digital UNIX (V3.2 and V4.0).

    We couldn't get the internal SCSI controller to work.
1840.4RZ55/RZ56 can't handle narror/wide negotiationWRKSYS::BIELAWSKIThu Feb 06 1997 12:524
    The RZ55/RZ56 disks do not handle narrow-wide negotiation properly.
    See note 681.
