Note 2164.0 General protection fault in CM.EXE 4 replies

Hi,
One customer has a problem in the configuration manager. When he goes into
Object Hierarchy, selects an object class (compound) and presses "location"
then he gets an
"CM caused a general protection fault in CM.EXE at 0007:8FE9" error.

The error occurs only for user-defined sub-classes of cabinet or drawer.
The error is 100% reproducable.

The environment is : HP-UX server, LinkWorks 2.1.7
		     Oracle 7.0.16.4.1
		     WFW 3.11 - Windows-client
		     SUN-select NFS/TCP/IP.

Is this a known error ? - can it be fixed?

Regards

Flemming Carlsen/DEC-DK.

    Flemming,

Indeed this is known problem see note 1038.

    The suggested solution could be:

On MSWindows clients a 'General Protection Fault' may occure when clicking
on the location button in the ObjectClassHierachy screen of a specific
derived class. This same situation may result in a system hang on the MAC client
and in a killed configuration process on the Motif client.

This problem is occuring when a sub class is derived from a higher level
class and later on changes are made to the hierarchy of the higher level class from
    which the subclasses are derived.

example:	Derive 2 classes from 'Folder', these 2 classes enherit all the
characteristics of the higher level class.

Changing the ObjectClassHierachy of 'Folder' and removing
one of the derived folder classes from the hierachy will create
		the problem situation!
Commit changes (and remove the cache files (see 1:) ), login again
and then pressing the 'Location' button on the subclass of 'Folder'
(the one removed from the Folder hierachy) will give the 'General
		Protection Fault'.

Solution:	If this problem or similar problem occures on the client always
verify the parent class contains all sub classess defined under this
		parent class!
In case of problems always make sure that you have the actual cache files
(see 1:) and then select the 'standard' button under 'Location' of the higher
level object class, to reset the hierarchy to default values!.

If this does not help the please contact me so that we can debug the
    problem!

    Han

Han,

Thank you for your reply.

Just to be sure how to make the solution for this problem: could you point out the exact
procedure?

I checked note 1038 and it did not add anything more than you had already mentioned in
your reply.

What is your ref to .1? - how to make sure/verify ?

Thank you and merry x-mas.

Flemming,

I Copied the text from another document, here is the whole document:

Following problems are found inside LinkWorks Management components:

1: When a System Administrator makes a change to the ObjectClassHierarchy
of a compound Objekt, then after commiting changes and logout/login the
changes made will not appear in the ObjectClassHierachy!

The changes are made but the cache files on the client are not updated
correctly. This may lead to problems when a System Administrator wants to
make more changes to the ObjectClassHierachy since the previous changes will
    be made undone!

To bypass this problem one should remove the client cache files
('DATA**.CLC')after committing changes on this client and before
     loggin in the next time.

2: On MSWindows clients a 'General Protection Fault' may occure when clicking
on the location button in the ObjectClassHierachy screen of a specific
derived class. This same situation may result in a system hang on the MAC
client and in a killed configuration process on the Motif client.
