BLITZ TITLE: Digital UNIX Workstations Panic When Running dxsysinfo
DATE: 7-Jan-1997
AUTHOR: John Franzini TD #: 2202
DTN: 381-1170
ENET: ALPHA::FRANZINI CROSS REFERENCE #'s:
DEPARTMENT: UNIX Support Engineering (PRISM/TIME/CLD#'s)
INTENDED AUDIENCE: All PRIORITY LEVEL: 1
(U.S./EUROPE/GIA) (1=TIME CRITICAL,
2=NON-TIME CRITICAL)
=====================================================================
PROBLEM:
All workstations with Digital UNIX V4.0 or later FIS installed
will panic when running the System Information application,
dxsysinfo.
Workstations with Digital UNIX FIS installed also include the
Open3D layered product. As part of the Open3D installation, a
device special file, /dev/esl0, is created for the Evans &
Sutherland Freedom Series graphics options. This device special
file is created even if the system does not include a Freedom
graphics option.
The System Information application issues a file command on
every file in /dev to determine what devices are on the system.
A file command on /dev/esl0 when a Freedom graphics option is
not present causes the system to panic.
RESOLUTION/WORKAROUND:
To prevent this problem, remove the /dev/esl0 device special
file as follows:
# rm /dev/esl0
In the future, FIS installed systems will not include the
/dev/esl0 device special file on systems that do not require
it.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
The System Information application, dxsysinfo, is normally
started from the CDE Application Manager via System_Admin/
DailyAdmin/System Information.
