    re: multi-head support under NT WHEN???

    Windows NT 4.0 does not allow 3D multihead support today. When Microsoft
    makes changes to NT 4.0 that allow multihead we will begin working on
    it. Multihead is a high priority for us. Our target is this summer --
    IF the necessary NT 4.0 support becomes available as expected. (And,
    hopefully, SP3 will be more reliable than SP2....)
37.65Trust, but verify. Matrox already have it?????BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Sat Jan 25 1997 06:542
    Customers are telling me that Matrox already have multihead on NT 4 "by
    doing it in the driver". Should I believe them ?

The README on the current Intel kit (1597_233.zip) that I copied from their
web site yesterday does claim support for 4 heads.

Considering the amount of information on configuring multiheads
in the readme, it looks real. (and it's for NT4)
37.67WRKSYS::mccasa.eng.pko.dec.com::DUTTONThere once was a note, pure and easy...Sat Jan 25 1997 18:3110
It is my understanding that the Matrox approach is once again a "hack"
under NT 4.0, which means that it could break anytime Microsoft does a
new release. It is also my understanding that the approach our
software people are taking is to get multi-head officially supported,
and then release a driver that *won't* break in future releases.

...but then I could be wrong... :)

    The key thing to check is 3D -- it is possible to do 3D multihead under
    NT 4.0. Does the Matrox driver support OpenGL on both heads?
37.69DECWET::VAGHULWed May 07 1997 13:1011

    The Matrox driver supports 3d on both heads. The OpenGL acceleration
    implemented in the Matrox driver for NT40 uses MCD architecture. MCD =
    Mini Client Driver. When there is a single head - OpenGL is accelerated
    (depending upon whether you have a 4MB or 8MB, size of the window,
    resolution etc) via MCD. When there are two heads - OpenGL is not
    accelerated - i.e. it goes through the Software Pipe.

    Hopefully in NT 50 timeframe, we can accelerate OpenGL on both heads.
