480.0. "Alternatives to using fx numbers" by TLE::D_SMITH (Duane Smith -- DEC C RTL) Thu Jun 05 1997 15:19

Does anyone know of alternatives within New Hampshire for using a
terminal and modem from Concord without using foreign exchange numbers
    and without dialing long distance?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can anyone shed light on why Digital decided to disconnect foreign
exchange numbers in New Hampshire? I live near Concord, NH and have
been using the Manchester foreign exchange number for the past 16
years. Yesterday, this number was disconnected around noon time.

I called the help desk who gave me the number for the Concord, NH
foreign exchange number. When trying to test this last evening, I
discovered that that number was disconnected yesterday as well.

It appears that Digital wants one of three goals:

o use a different mechanism to connect to the systems
o pay employee long distance bills instead of fx bills
o discourage employees from working from home

    Nothing surprises me anymore...

In the near future, you'll be able to get fast internet service from your cable
or telephone company.

See http://www.mediaone.com/ (MediaOne from Continental Cablevision)
or http://205.164.80.47/cablemod.htm (Roadrunner from Time Warner)

It's also been announced by Bell Atlantic.

I know someone in MA that uses MediaOne and swears by it. I also know that they
will be offering it soon in some NH areas (a friend got a mailing in Portsmouth).

The future is now, in some places plaes...

-Jeff

ALtavista Tunnel sounds really attractive ... if it were available for
Macintosh. :-)

To answer my own question, the closest alternative for my terminal at
home is to use WATN. "VTX WATN" gives instructions on how to call MCI
to obtain the local phone number to use. You also have to obtain a
    WATN account and password.

In Merrimack I'm going to bet that it will be the phone company (NYNEX) that
gets this going not Americable - and I'm not going to hold my breath waiting
for it.

RE: .4

Same in Nashua. Time Warner can't even get us Cartoon
Network (for Space Ghost: Coast to Coast) or SciFi. To
think they would provide Internet connectivity over
	cable is laughable at best.
