472.0. "Air Handlers being replaced zko1&2" by HNDYMN::MCCARTHY (A Quinn Martin Production) Tue Mar 04 1997 10:21

In case people around here are wondering what is going on with all the
construction, I recieved some info from Jim D about that (I've re-worded it):

- There is currently work taking place in all the labs in ZKO1&2 also in
some of the office areas in ZKO1 we are replacing all of the air handlers
on the roofs of both buildings for two reasons:

	- ZKO1 is end of life

	- ZKO1&2 were designed with a different style of computing
(remember when the only drop you had was a LAT or hard wire
terminal line to a VT terminal?)
The requirements have changed and the buildings are being
	  updated because of that.

As with any renovation with the building is still in use, the plans are to:

  - Add the new ducts
  - Add new air handlers
  - Switch over to new system
  - remove the old

BTW, the pipes between the air coolers in the labs and the
compressor on the roof, appear to possibly be covered with
pipe insulation containing abestos. Anyone know for sure?

If anybody is going to take pictures of the helicopter work this weekend, I'd
love to see them.

Since I live across the street, I was thinking about it... It's all timing,
since I'm heading south around 8:15am...

The air-crane arrived about 1/2 hour ago.

It would make one hell of a leaf blower !

I took one still shot of it sitting the lot. I've got a few more pictures left
on the role, so it will be a while.

It was flying at 6:40am Saturday. I awoke and could just barely hear it, until
I went out on my porch. Then I could REALLY hear it. I could see the blades
through some of the trees, but nothing interesting. When I left at 8:30 am, I
intended to come by and take some more pictures, but since I couldn't hear it, I
figured it wasn't flying and so I took off for the day. At 4:45, it appeared
they were finished.

472.7Seen from Rt 3 NorthDECC::SULLIVANJeff SullivanMon Apr 14 1997 13:1011
I saw "Hurricane Bubba" from Rt 3 North on Sat at about 12:30. It was lifting
one of the boxes into place at the time. I was surprised how close it appeared
to be to the highway. No pitures, though.

I wondered if it would be on the local news, but I guess it's not news unless
something goes wrong. I saw a video of a similar chopper that dropped it's load
and then crashed in Texas(?). They were installing a similar sized unit on a 10+
story building. Although it looked very scary, no one on the ground or in the
helicopter was seriously hurt.

I hear that the helicopter will be back to work on this Saturday. Same site
shutdown info as last time. I'm not sure if it's back in the lot yet...

        Hi,
I took some video this past weekend of the Erickson
sky crane helicopter replacing the 7-9 ton air handlers
on top of the Spit Brook Rd. facility. Chewing through
10 gallons of fuel a minute, it's a pretty impressive
flying machine. I have about 1/2 hour of video. If
anyone's interested in either viewing or copying this
            video, let me know.

RE: .9

Maybe someone in the multimedia group would convert it
to AVI or Quicktime? Try asking Tom Morris.
