INFORMATIONAL
CCS SERVICE ADVISORY
*********************************
WHAT: Advisory regarding the migration from "Digital Standard"
Thinwire-10Base2 Ethernet office wiring to UTP-10BaseT Ethernet
wiring.
WHEN: The migration will take place over a period of time at Digital
sites which have not yet migrated to the new configuration.
Specific details and communications will be provided on a site by
site basis in a timely manner. In ZKO, this migration will begin in
Q3/FY97 and continue through Q2/FY98.
As indicated previously, the migration will occur gradually. This
advisory is intended to help CCS Clients understand and prepare for
the change.
IMPACT: During the migration there are a few scenarios which could impact
you or may be of concern to you, such as:
1- You are preparing to order new equipment and want to be sure you
order the appropriate configuration. You want to order what will
accommodate the new technology but also allow connectivity prior to
the migration.
2- You have existing desktop equipment which will not accommodate
the migration to UTP-10BaseT office wiring. Your current Network
Interface card is Thinwire-10Base2 only.
3- You have desktop equipment which WILL accommodate the new
UTP-10BaseT wiring ONLY, but YOUR OFFICE is still wired for
Thinwire.
ACTION: The following paragraphs describe actions which can be taken for each
of the above scenarios in preparation for the changes. A solution for
accommodating current mis-match of office/system connection types
pending migration is also offered below.
NAMING CONVENTIONS:
When ordering PCMCIA or NIC cards please remember the following
naming translations exist for Ethernet 10 Megabit media products;
o ThinWire is the same as 10Base2
o Unshielded Twisted Pair or Twisted Pair is the same as 10BaseT
o A combo card is a combination of 10BaseT and 10Base2
There are many different versions of NIC and PCMCIA cards available,
which are associated with the vast amount of desktop systems. It
will be important to understand what type of local bus your
system has that the network interface card plugs into, such as
EISA, ISA and PCI. Note: ISA NIC cards can fit into an EISA bus
but EISA NIC cards will not fit into an ISA bus.
ORDERING NEW EQUIPMENT:
All new desktop personal computers, Laptops, LAN based printers,
workstations and windowing-terminals should be ordered to
accommodate BOTH types of media at the office, ThinWire-10Base2
and UTP-10BaseT. This means that the Network Interface Card (NIC)
or PCMCIA card should be a 'combo' which is both UTP-10BaseT AND
Thinwire-10Base2.
UPGRADING CURRENT CONFIGURATION OF Thinwire-10Base2 ONLY:
Existing desktop hardware with ThinWire-10Base2 connections should
be upgraded with a new Network Interface Card (NIC), that provides
both UTP-10BaseT and ThinWire-10Base2, which is the recommended
solution. Again, this would be the NIC or PCMCIA combo cards.
UPGRADING CURRENT CONFIGURATIONS OF UTP-10BaseT Only:
Customers with existing Systems that have NIC cards with only
a UTP-10BaseT connection and are at a Digital Site which has
already migrated to the UTP-10BaseT office wiring do not need to
take any action.
Customers with existing systems that have NIC cards with only a
UTP-10BaseT connection BUT whose office connections are still ThinWire
only, should purchase a DETTR-AA, which converts the UTP-10BaseT to
ThinWire-10Base2 until the migration of office wiring has been
completed.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE:
The are several means for obtaining technical assistance with system
configurations, which are to contact your IEG Rep directly, accessing
configuration information through VTX IEG, sending mail to
LJSRV2::IEGHELP or Accessing the Networks Product Business Web
page for options on NIC card configurations;
