This time they are cutting the blacktop up. Hmm that was a real good choice
to put down as a replacment for the tiles (some external contractor has to
be hired to cut it).

| Yeah...I liked the tiles much better. But, I guess the tiles are expensive to
lay (relative to blacktop), and things needed attention at a time when we didn't
have much money....

I dunno...
If you assume that any given individual's boss must be in the same facility as
his report, then you are implying that that all Digital employees must work in
the same facility.
If he's head-of-facilities for this site, it seems perfectly reasonable for his
boss to be somewhere else; otherwise, he wouldn't be the "head", here... :-)

That sign was referring to the ACBL duplicate bridge tournament, in the Euclid
conference room, that was originally supposed to be for people with some point
standing, but at the last minute was changed to be open to all players.

Subject: Update on the zk2 bridge cutting
I just spoke with the engineers about the concrete cutter working on the bridge
into ZK2. He said the cutting will continue thru the day today (Friday) and
may take even longer. For those of you not close to this little effort,
the noise is not pleasant.
The engineers discovered that the concrete bridge is cantilevered! That is, the
bridge is not attached to the ZK2 building. They discovered this when they
began cutting and found that there was far more steel reinforcement in the
concrete than they had expected. With more steel in place, the cutting takes
significantly longer.

| And Dick and I chatted offline. First it's interesting that
they are cutting through the supporting rebar, and 2nd, Dick
also pointed out that it's interesting this project is being
engineered w/out even knowing this information beforehand!

| Yeah, I would have thought the blueprints for this building would have
been on file with the city/county/state/etc as well as a copy kept here
in the building. I have a hard time believing that the original
blueprints didn't show the extra rebar and the contractor upgraded the
bridge for "the fun of it". Does anybody know the engineering firm
who drew up the plans for repairing the bridge? (Am I assuming too
much to think that we had a real civil engineer draw up plans before
we start cutting?)
-John
P.S. I had the vision in my head that when the cut the bridge
apart from the building, that the building would collapse.

| Somehow the cutting make me think the bridge is going away, instead of
just replacing black top. Meaning significant downtime for the ZK2 entrance.
Why am I invisioning a rope bridge ala Disney and Swiss Family Robinson?

The work they are doing is not to replace the black top, but an
attempt to solve the water problems (ie. water coming into the
building under the bridge). As mentioned in an earlier reply,
they were going to cut a channel for the water to flow through or
something like that.
However now that they know the contrete slab is canterlevered
and not supported by the building itself, and from todays work,
it appears they are cutting (well they've switched to a jackhammer,
so it's not actually cutting like they were with their diamond
tipped saw yesterday) all the way through the slab.
Maybe they should just take down the whole bridge and bring in
fill and backfill between the building .....

| At lunch, we asked one of the workmen what was going on. He said they
were cutting the bridge away from the building now and would return
when the weather was warmer to finish the job. We made some comment
like "So, the bridge will be closed for a while?". He said "Yep".
Now, there may have been some miscommunication so I can't tell for
sure, but you might have to get in pretty early for one of those
legal parking spaces... :-)

in half so the water will drain and then put a temporary (plywood) top over the
cut.

The Bridge is reopened as of today, only 50 % of the work has been
completed due to weather, we will schedule to complete the remainder
of the work in the mid to late April timeframe. I would like to apologize
for all the inconvenience this project has caused. I will do my best to
have better communications and a reasonable schedule for the remainder of
the work. Again I apologize for the inconvenience and the poor
communication. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
