1648.1 | Mexican Trip Report | RIPPLE::EDRY_PA | | Thu Jul 11 1991 18:22 | 26 |
| Last week heard tuna were in close off Puerto Vallarta up to 40 lbs.
Since my trip to Mexico would be complete if we could connect with a
few I booked 3 hrs with the local skiff operator and took off for a
2 to 5 mile run off the coast. On the way out les than a mile from
shore we had our first hookup a yellowfin about #15 at about 800 hrs
and we thought we were off to the races. Unfortunately, in the next
2 hours we caught and released mostly Bonita 3 to #10 and one more
yellowfin about #20. It was the same old story should have been here
week or two ago when the 40's were in abundance. I think the heavy
rains affected the salinity of the inshore waters and they moved off.
FWIW, it was encouraging to see massive schools of bonita on top with
Yellowfin lower that were in the thousands leaping like footballs after
sardines. As the sun went higher the bite decreased markedly,
problably because our trolled leadhead hoochies and line no longer
fooled them.
In any case we grilled up the tuna Mexican Style and had a real feed.
I'll be talking to a friend who charters out to Gulf Stream from
Montauk. He'll have the latest satellite reports on temperatures
and the local tuna news. If there's news worth sharing I'll pass
it along...

| Thanks for the update and any other satellite reports you can
pass on. Bill long lines for tuna with Norweigan ball floats
out of a 19' Boston Whaler. He has not had any hookup as yet
in four years of trying but did miss a $10,000 fish last year
the tip fell off his harpoon. A big bluefin was finning on
the top near the boat.....GACK! I'm glad I wasn't along.

1648.3 | rumors are starting | PENUTS::GORDON | | Tue Jul 16 1991 13:26 | 9 |
| I have heard that they are starting to get a few on stellwagon and
jeffery's ledge. The stick boats have gotten some and someone lost a
nice one when his reel blew apart.
The water is warming up nicely and it shouldn't be too long. Maybe it
will get warm enough to get some yellow fin in Ipswich bay.

| A couple of weekends ago we were looking for the sandbar down
around the spindle across from Cranes and a couple we catching
little salmon on sandworms. We tried with lures but came up
with an empty sack. Sure would have been good on the grill...
The great sandbar shifted this year sad to say

1648.7 | how far offshore for tuna ? | FURTHR::HANNAN | Beyond description... | Wed Jul 17 1991 14:47 | 8 |
| How far out would one need to go for Tuna (schoolies) ? I'm in
the process of buying a 17' 1960 Thompson (all wood, real nice)
that's spent countless hours on the ocean, but I'm not sure I'd
want to take it too far offshore. Did I hear reference to yellowfin
not too far offshore ?
Thanks,
Ken

1648.8 | They don't come in close enough for 17' | SMURF::AMATO | Joe Amato | Thu Jul 18 1991 09:40 | 10 |
| re .-1
For NE fisherman, the yellowfin are found south of cape cod (and
probably east), RI, and NY. Plan on going out 15+ nm. A few years
back they were within 8-10 nm from Block, but I don't think they'vre
been in that close since.
The thompson probably spent its time in bay's and within a few miles of
the beaches. I wouldn't plan on taking a 17' very far offshore.
