1644.0. "need info on bluefish" by HPSRAD::FEENEY () Tue Jul 09 1991 12:09

	i would like to go fishing for bluefish some evening this week,
	and know very little about the critters. Could anybody answer
	some of my questions:

	1) Is it best to surfcast when the tide is coming in or going out?

	2) Are the blues still running and can they be caught from the shore?

	3) Any recommendations? North Shore, Cape Cod, the canal, buzzards bay,
	   plum island, NH? Not more than 2 hrs from Marlboro area.

1644.1try Plum island low tidePENUTS::GORDONTue Jul 09 1991 13:0631
    They have been getting them in the surf off Plum Island in tha
    Merrimack and at the mouth near the Jettys. The best time has been
    early morning or early evening about two hours before and after low
    tide. However, you never really know when they will be there. When I
    used to fish there it was always 'you should have been here yesterday'.

    There are also many stripers both schoolies and keepers (36" min).

    The bluefish have been small 3-10 lbs and acme kastmasters, white
    bucktails (better with pork rind), hopkins, and popper plugs. Every
    time I go through the river the banks are lined with surf casters.

    Also cut mackeral at night works well.

    Places to fish.
    	The jettys at the mouth
    	The ocean side (look around for other fisherman)
    	Near the end of the old coast guard station by the captians fishing
    parties. Especially at low tide on the sand bar. (watch out here the
    current flows fast and if you fall in your chances aren't all that
    good)

    A good place for information is Surfland bait and tackle. They have
    everything you can imagine for salt water fishing including bait.
    Note: as with any other shop the information is usually better if you
    buy something. Listen to the conversation while in there, one can pick
    up some useful info from the casual conversation.

    	Buzzards bay area is a hot spot, I cant give you exact location but
    right around the bridge you should find at least 3 to 4 spots to fish.

    	Popper, plugs, crabs, squid, are some of my faverites to use. The
    current is strong aroud this area also so be carefull! While yu are
    fishing for blues look out for stripers they are in this are also and
    they can get pretty big (Cows - up to 50 lb).

    	Dont forget for bass (36" min) and for blues only 10 per person per
    day. Good luck and fill us in when you get back.

1644.3Blues on the CapeLJOHUB::REDFIELDSun Jul 14 1991 15:4512
Great areas for blues reacheable in under 2 hours from Marlboro...
All are on South side of Cape.

	Cotuit Bay and vicinty immediately outside channel (Loop Beach).
	West Bay channel (jetty)
	East Bay beaches in Osterville
	Pomponesset Beach in Mashpee

Yes they are running and are easily accessible from shore through July.
Check tides etc. Best when bait fish are coming in with tidal currents.
