We it's that time of year again. It seems that the Feds are considering closing down Jefferies and Stellwagon to the taking of all groundfish by commercial and recreational anglers. I haven't seen the info yet. It should be in todays mail. I hear a meeting is scheduled for this Thursday in the Cape Ann area. If voted on, the closure would start on June 16th. I'm going to try and find out if there is a fax number that I can send in a message with my comments, I'll post it here. Steve

Had to butt in here. No, there is no limit to fishing associated with the effort to turn the Stellwagen Bank into a Marine Sanctuary. Any limit placed on fishing activities on the Stellwagen (aka Middle) Bank will result from some other governmental group. The Marine Sanctuary effort is meant to curtail development and shipping threats to the wildlife on the bank, and the need for support from the fishing community has squelched any voices calling for harvest limitations. This has nothing to do with the Stellwagon Marine Sanctuary proposal. They use some law that allows them to close areas if there is data showing that a large number of undersize fish are being taken. Has anybody read the notice yet? The Fax number for NOAA, NMFS is 508-281-9333. Steve | |||||
