1620.0. "COD HOT SPOTS" by BOSOX::MFLAHERTY () Mon Jun 10 1991 00:14

      Hi I'm kinda new to the area. I was wondering if anyone might
    know of any spots were the COD are biting at this time of year,
    and what they are hitting on.
      I'm going out for the first time this year this weekend. I'm
    moored in S. Boston, and any LAT/LON's or T/D's would be
    appreciated.

1620.1Bait shot owners usually have some ideas..DELNI::JMCDONOUGHMon Jun 10 1991 13:347
       Ask some of the bait shop owners...

       I've heard that off the mouth of the Merrimack near Plum Island is
    always a good Cod fishery.. In fact, they are taken quite regularly by
    surf casters....dunno what they are using, but probably clams..

    Basically you cannot buy a cod south of cape anne right now, even
    the commericals are having tough times.

1620.3is too warm nowPENUTS::GORDONWed Jun 12 1991 13:3011
    They get cod off plum island, but only in the colder months. The water
    gets too warm and the fish more offshore. In Jan,feb,mar are the best
    months if you can stand the cold.

    re: .2
    That explains all the draggers out last saturday on old scantum.
    Fished three-four hours <and caught two market cod. I should have kept
    going to Jefferies.

1620.4Good Fishing at 325+ feet.WMOIS::G_PELLETIERWed Jun 12 1991 15:2316
    I was out on Monday with "Al Gauron" fishin parties out of Hamptom.
    This was on a 90 foot party boat and there was only 25-30 people in
    all.

    Everyone caught at least 7-8 COD (some people caught 20+). Almost all
    of the cod were from jigging and most were hooked on "Teasers".

    There were no Haddock caught, a few sharks were hooked, and all of the
    undersized cod were released (but there was very few under the 19"
    minimum size). Also, seen 1 whale go by.

    The weather was great, the fishing was fine, and everyone enjoyed
    themselves. SHOULD BE LIKE THIS EVERY TIME I GO OUT!

1620.5Capt. Jon finds the fish...SALEM::ALLOREAll I want is ONE shot..well maybe 2Mon Jun 17 1991 08:519
               I just went out this past Friday with Al Gauron on
    "Thumper". We had a great day also. Everyone caught fish and
    I won the pool with what they estimated to be a 40 lber! The
    weather was great and so was the fishing. It must have been
    because we were fishing in one of "Flashes" hot spots. Right
    Steve.....?
               Now to start planning my next trip.....
