1611.0. "Deep Sea Info needed" by ASABET::POMEROY () Tue Jun 04 1991 10:41

I am heading up to Hampton this weekend do to some Deep Sea
fishing and I need some info.

o Has anyone gone out with either Al Gauron or Smith & Gilmore
       this year?

o Are they having a good season?

    o What are they catching?

o Are there any other places in the Hampton/Salisbury that have
       good full/half day fishing trips?

I usually go out with the Yankee Fleet, but over the past few years
it seems to have slowed down. The fishinf with them has been terrible.
When I went last year, the captain decided to do some drifting and
some slow trolling and this caused all sorts of problems. Lines got
all tangled and they spent about 30 minutes trying to weed through the
mess. 1/2 hour isn't bad if you are on a full day trip, but this was
a half day trip. Then, after all that time, they decided it would be
best to just cut some of the lines. Mine was one of them. Because
they cut my line, I lost my weight. I then had to go in and pay for
another one. I tried to argue that I did not loose it and that it
the mates fault, but they said that doesn't matter. And with the
prices that they charge, I think that they can afford to stop charging
so much for equipment. I also called Al Gauron and S&G. Their prices
seem reasonably. About $17 with 1 charging a $2 equipment charge for
a half day trip. The Yankee Fleet is ripping people off for $22 a half
    day plus $4.50 for rental....

But anyway, If anyone has any info it will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't been out on a party boat. I have my own but read the fishing
reports for the area. The full day boats have been getting good
catches of cod, some wolffish, mackeral, and an occasional haddock.

The half day boats are gearing to mackeral since they are all over the
place now. I caught 2 five gallon buckets of them in a couple hours last
    Saturday.

Some choices in the Newburyport/Salisbury area.

Captains fishing parties on Plum island. They have a new 78 foot boat
plus a couple half day boats.

Hiltons fishing dock has one , I beiieve it's called the Capt Lew

Across the river in salisbury there is Clipper marine. They have a
full day boat and two half day boats. I have been out with these folks
in the past and they are a good crew and usually find fish for
    everyone.

I cannot help you with the prices since I haven't been for 3 years.

Hope this helps. There are also other notes in this conference which
have many more operations all up and down the coast.

1611.2Party boat infoVICKI::DODIERFood for thought makes me hungryTue Jun 04 1991 14:1317
re:-1 (please move this with the others Mr. Mod.)

Correction - Captain's Fishing parties has a new 90' boat. They got
the 78'er a couple years ago.

I went out on the new boat (Captain's Lady II) last Monday and had
an excellent trip out to Northern Jeffries.

The boat had 6 fish over 20 lbs. and the pool winner was a 32 lb.
cod. I personally caught many cod, a cusk, a wolfish, some pollack, and
    some mackeral (mackeral were EVERYWHERE).

BTW - The dog fish are already in so bait fishing will probably
deteriate pretty quickly. I'd suggest that if someone is going for cod
that they do it quick or consider jigging.

1611.3Try Eastman's Fishing in SeabrookPIPPER::JDREWTue Jun 04 1991 16:2412
I usually go out with Eastman's Fishing in Seabrook N.H. It's just
across the bridge form Hampton. I've been setting up trips for years
for my group and have always had reasonable luck fishing. We will be
going out this Friday. I think is full day is $27 and 1/2 day is $15.
I've always done the full day trip which goes out to Jeffery's Ledge.
The half day trips will go to Isle of Sholes. Mackeral fishing is fun
for the kids and some big kids too. You'll get more mackeral than you
want to carry home. Jeffery's ledge is the best area for cod fishing
but the dog fish will screw that up quick.
    Have fun and good luck

1611.4Went W/Captains on Plum IslandASABET::POMEROYThu Jun 20 1991 08:3421
I know this report is a little late, but here it is anyway. I went
out with Captains Fishing Parties. We were fidhing for Mackeral and
Blues. We did manage to catch a few Mackeral, but not many. They
said that the Blues had started to move in earlier in the week and
drove out all the other fish. Fishing was real/reel slow. Most
fish were caught in small spurts as the Mackeral circled through the
area, which was 12 miles outside of Plum Island. I was not to
impressed with the staff. They were young and very inexperienced.
They equipment left something to be desired. They reels were held
together with rubber bands. And the rods looked like they would snap
if you caught a good sixe of anything.

Overall rating based on a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best):

I would rate it a low 3... Price was cheap $18/half-day and
$31/full-day. I can't remember what the equipment rental fee was, but
it sure doesn't go towards the rods and reels. Advice if you go,
bring a freshwater rod, with 10-12 lbs. test line and some silver jigs,
when you do catch one it does get fun.
