1601.0. "Not a Trace of Wire?" by VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEY () Mon May 20 1991 16:30

    Hi,
      anybody know if you can use the wire cable that releases the motor
    tension on RA disk drives as sea traces???.
    I was thinking of using them for drifting over wrecks for Conger eels,
    and wanted to know if someone had used these wires with any success?.

    I have mentioned this in a previous note-(1579.3), but got no replies,
    you get to wondering if all you keen sea anglers in the US will not
    speak to us lonely beachcasters in the UK??????.

    Heres hoping and praying.

    Regards
             Colin.

    Colin,

        I'm from the state of Vermont and don't get to do much salt water
    fishing but I am a curious angler. Can you tell me what a sea trace is
    and a conger eel? I presume a conger eel must have some eating value?
        We have many fresh water eels in Lake Champlain here and provided
    people can get by the squirming they do in the frying pan while cooking
    they're quite tasty.

1601.2trace (UK) = leader (US)WAHOO::LEVESQUEEvil FantasiesTue May 21 1991 09:156
 A trace, to those across the pond, is what we call a leader. The question
is whether anyone has used the wire from an RA disk as a wire leader. A conger
eel, if I may guess, is probably like a large, toothy cusk. We don't see
them over on the west side of the atlantic (at least, not with that name!)

    re: .all

    	I *think* conger eels are around the west side of the big pond.

    	I will check my fishy field guides tonight...

1601.4Congers vs Wolf FishDNEAST::OKERHOLM_PAUTue May 21 1991 10:465
    I think the Conger Eel is related to the Wolf Fish. We used to call
    Wolf Fish, Conger Eels when I was a youngster...but that's ancient
    history.   ;^).

I have caught the eels on a party boat out of gloucester. They have a unique
texture when they are filleted. They are good eating also

1601.6Come on do the Conger?.VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEYTue May 21 1991 13:4933
    Hello all?,
               thanks for your replys, a Conger eel is similar to a Moray
    eel somewhat??, they weigh anything up to 100+lb, and are normally
    found around ship wrecks, harbour walls, or rocky terrain where they
    lurk in holes or crags, waiting for whatever comes by?.

    Still waiting for anyone who has used those wires though???????????.

    The Traces that I hope to make up are ledger rigs, ie:- a length of
    wire to which two size 5.0 or 6.0 hooks are attached, the wire is
    normally 5-6ft in length and that is attached to the main line which
    would be around 50lb breaking strain.
    The bait would be herring or mackerel strips, or lures.

    Thats the best example I can manage (sorry?).

    I have some recent copies of the UK magazine Sea Angler if anybody is
    interested about what goes on over here, give me your internal mail
    address and I will be happy to forward them to whoever wants one, you
    will then get some idea what size our conger get up to???.

    Regards
           Colin.
1601.7Eels of the dark.BTOVT::PHELPSTue May 21 1991 16:4612
    Colin,

        Thanks for the explanations. We use leaders here in fresh water for
    some of more toothy creatures that lurk in the weeds here. If you
    wouldn't mind, I'd like one of your magazines to read. As I said in .1,
    I don't get to fish the saltwater much but I am always interested in
    learning different principles about fishing of any sort.
        My internal mail is John Phelps BTO. I always get my mail with
    just that.

          Thanks, John

1601.8Am I missing something ???VICKI::DODIERFood for thought makes me hungryTue May 21 1991 17:177
    	Why not just make your own. The pliers, crimps, and a few yards of
    wire leader material (in the U.S. anyway) would only be around $10 or so.
    Is there anything special about the RAxx wire ???

    	The premade ones aren't that expensive either.

1601.9UK LIVE WIRE?VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEYThu May 23 1991 14:3117
    Hello John, Rayj,
                     firstly John, I will send you a copy of the magazine
    asap, after you read it you might try sea fishing??, let me know how it
    goes.
    Rayj, I do want to make my own traces?, but over here when you fish
    wrecks you tend to lose quite a bit of tackle???, so whats the point of
    buying wire trace when the good old RA disk drive cables are in
    abundance, I only take the old cables after I do PMs.
    It makes sense to use these cables if your liable to lose tackle, I
    have, on one occasion, lost 5 wire traces? (premade), which on average
    would cost in the region of 3.50p each, for good ones?.
    Anyway its always good to experiment with you own designs, and it seems
    a waste as these cables are thrown away. Still waiting for someone to
    let me know if they have used them............come on lads????.

    Best of luck
                 Colin.
1601.10RE: LIVE WIRE WHY NOT!WFOV11::CERVONEThu May 23 1991 15:168
    Colin,
    	I havent used them but I do some wreck fishing for cod and I use
    regular leaders of mono line of about 80lb test, but it seems that if
    you have this wire why not use it I dont think the eels shy away from
    it. I am alsointerested in the magazine my internal mail stop is WFO
    FRANK CERVONE, thank you and good luck.

1601.11Big Bite.VIVIAN::C_MIDGLEYThu May 23 1991 21:228
    Hello Frank,
                I will be glad to forward a magazine to you asap.
    I know you can use heavy mono line, but with Conger eels anything of
    worthy size would bite straight through it?, hence I would rather use
    wire traces, just to be safe.

    Best of luck,
                 Colin.
