1585.0. "Fishing in the Rockies" by FRAGLE::MACDUFFIE (Daily Training) Sun May 05 1991 23:14

    Hi Folks,

On June 1st, a friend and I are flying out from Boston to Denver
on a 4 week vacation with our bicycles and 4 piece rods (Eagle Claw).
We plan to ride from Denver to Calgary stopping at the National Parks
along the way. Having fished the NewEngland area for years and having
never fished out west, I was wondering if you folks had any recommen-
dations on what I should bring along on the trip?

For those of you that are familiar with the Worcester area,
    yesterday I caught a 25 inch Pike in Bell Pond.:-)...so that's
what's been eating all the Bass there!

    							Thanks!

	Hi David,

What kind of recommendations are you looking for, clothes,
bait/lures, places to fish, weather, etc? What will be your
route out of Denver? Are you camping along the way? Let
me know what your looking for and I'll try to help you out.

	Gordon

1585.2A little more to the point:-)FRAGLE::MACDUFFIEDaily TrainingTue May 07 1991 13:5743
	Hi Gordon!

	Thanks for the reply!.

Specifics: We'll be cycling North to Calgary basically
following a trial that brings up through Shadow Mtn,
Rocky Mtn N.P., Dinosaur N.P. Flaming Gorge, Fossil Butte,
Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier and then Banff.

I prefer backroads, no traffic, and I will travel a
longer more circuitous route to get away from traffic.
Plus, the better fishing spots are found off the beaten
	track:-) I hope anyways:-)

I guess the question I was asking ( not too clearly:-) was
"what should we be fishing for out there?" And what do
we need to bring along in order to increase our chances?
What kind of live baits are plentiful and pretty rewarding?
	Crawdads?..salamanders? etc?.

We'll each be bringing one of those tiny plastic tackle
boxes (4"x8"?) and all we've got is some Mepps trout lures
and Bass lures; ie, spinners, gitzits etc. Our rods are
4 piece medium action Eagle claws. They should do the trick!
Nice and sturdy, and I think they're due for firewood in a
	pinch:-)

We will be camping along the way, and carrying all that we
need ( travel light - freeze at night:-). I'm also curious
about the need for fishing licenses for each State? The guy
I'm going with works for Sheriffs Department and will be
carrying his badge with him in the event need to draw upon
some "professional courtesy" Is it pretty likely we'll be
	asked to provide licenses?

I know it's a tough question to ask, but the MDC cops here
	are real tough. And to fish without licenses is like saying;
" Go ahead!, take my car, my equipment, my first born:-)...
and while you're at it? why don't you throw me in Jail too:-)

If you want more info, let me know! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Your not going to have a lot of choices in the way of backroads
as there are only so many routes over the divide and other ranges.
Regardless, the roads you will be using are not heavily traveled.
May want to get acouple of national forest maps to help you find
some of the spots off the beaten path. Those would be, Apapaho,
	Routt, and Roosevelt National Forests.

You will find lots of lakes and streams along that route that
contain different species of trout. Since it is national fishing
week June 2, there will be alot of stocking going on.

Berkely power bait, eggs and pink dough. Penskies (sp) eggs.
Your Mepps spinners, kastmasters (gold, brass, or silver),
	# 3 or 5 rapala's in silver or rainbow, #14 or 16 treble hooks
for the bait below a sliding sinker. Worms and grubs work.

One day fishing license is $5.25 and additional day stamps are $5.
	A 1 week license is $18.25. June 8 & 9 are free fishing days.
You best have a license. Fine is ~$50 plus $25 per fish. The
badge won't buy any grace. I don't have any info on the other
	states you'll hit.

	Does that help?

You might want to include some flies and a bubble in your gear.

A fly and a bubble is usually what I try first on the high mountain
lakes. I had good luck last summer using a fly with an orange body.
I think it resembles a fresh water shrimp...

    Enjoy the trip, sounds wonderful!

    Hi Davey-boy,

You dirty dog going out on another wild vacation, must be
nice! :v)! Dave all I can say is think TROUT!

Sounds like you'll have a great time and remember not to hang
the fish out by your camp site or Mr. Bear may come visit.

    Have fun,

    Wildman

ps: remember to bring those "balloons" :) :) :)!

    Gordon,

Thanks!!!!!!!...... Those maps you sent me ARE MINT! That was
really nice of you. Highlighting all those regional fishing
forecast reports was also very thoughtful. Thanks again. These
    will be very helpful.

Hey Bill!,...You wildman! Thanks for the tip about the bears!
Mr. Dave and Mr. Bear have met in Alaska and Mr. Dave doesn't
want to party with those `dudes' anymore:-)

But what the hell am I talking to you for?...you won't even
bring me to your `secret' Bass spot on that farm in Sterling:-)

						Thanks you guys!
						-David

P.S. Got a bet going with my riding partner to see who can
nail down a `ballon' in each state:-)
