| Robert,
Having grown up on the CT river in Springfield Mass, I can tell you that the
beginning of the shad run is right about now. I'd wait at least two weeks
to get into more of the meat of the run. Don't wait too long, they fight
better right out of the ocean. Give them about 2 weeks to get up to Spfld area
in numbers.

1575.2 | Two Shad Landed Below Lawrence Dam | ABACUS::HOYT | | Wed May 01 1991 13:54 | 4 |
| Shad are in the Merrimack now as far as the Lawrence Dam. Last
Sunday my daughter and I hooked four and landed two. The largest was
3 pounds. Try putting a split shot 18" above the shad dart. It will
increase the number of hits you get.

| Re: the Merrimack
Can anybody tell me the best place to fish for shad on the Merrimack.
I have fished the mouth near the old Coast Guard station with mixed
results and near Red Slavits with 0 results. I will be on foot (no
boat).
Thanks in advance

I can't tell your the best place (that's my secret) but I do know that
a lot of people fish just up river from the Rocks Village Bridge that runs
between West Newbury and Haverhill. Last weekend there must have been 30+
people fishing from both shore and boat on the West Newbury side. I don't
know if they did anything but something must have been up. They've been fishing
shad there for years....
Good luck....

1575.5 | Canoes - is it safe? | GNPIKE::NICOLAZZO | Free the beaches! | Mon May 06 1991 07:30 | 14 |
| re : .3
I don't know if its the best place but, I was fishing behind Spyros
Restaurant in Lawrence on Friday - picked up one shad, and saw a
bunch more caught from shore. The only problem is that you need
waders to get past the bushes lining the shore.
Does anyone know if its reasonable to put a canoe on the Merrimack
(and where to launch one if it is)? It appears that boat fishing
is the best way to get into shad - a couple of guys were out in a
boat on Friday and were cleaning up while us shore fishermen were
only taking an occasional fish...

1575.7 | MERRIMAC LAUNCH RAMPS | NEMAIL::FOLEY | | Wed May 08 1991 13:39 | 3 |
| DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO LAUNCH A BOAT ON THE
MERRIMAC RIVER IN THE HAVERHILL, WEST NEWBURY AREA. THERE SEEMS TO
BE A LOT OF GOOD FISHING IN THAT AREA BASED ON THE PREVIOUS REPLIES.

| Howdy,
I believe there is a ramp at the Crescent Yacht Club in Haverhill
just off Rte 125. Don't know anything about it except that it
supposedly exists. Give them a call.

| FWIW :
Shad are in the Conn. at least as far as Holyoke. A friend and I
were up there Saturday and landed 8 fish (largest about 4.5 lbs.
that my friend caught - weight is approximate : I botched the
netting job - I may never hear the end of that! ). In the time
we were there, I saw 2 Atlantic Salmon hooked - acrobatic little
buggers, ain't they?
Robert.
P.S. - The river was a zoo!! I've never seen so many fisherfolk in
one place. :*(

1575.10 | It's shad shakes time... | RIPPLE::CORBETTKE | | Mon Jun 03 1991 14:03 | 6 |
| The shad are in the top of their run her on the westcoast. I went out
Friday evening and Saturday Morning on the Umpqua. Ended up with 42
shad in the freezer. The crabbing should definitly pick up with that
much good bait.
