1562.0. "Hot salmon tactics for Maine??" by CTOAVX::MACKIN () Wed Mar 20 1991 08:00

I will traveling to Chandler Lake in Maine the 3rd week in May which
supposedly is prime for landlocks and brookies. I was wondering if
anyone knew of a particular lure or streamer fly that can be considered
the most likely to produce. I have the full array of weapons but am
looking for the 'MOTHER OF ALL LURES'.

I would also like to hear from anyone who has been to this lake. It is
my first trip there or to Maine, for remote fishin'.

If not I'll post the results of the trip for those interested.

    Any info appreciated.

Bring an assortment of Mepps and Rooster tails.

I have had the best luck with white Rooster tails and silver Mepps.
Bring an assortment because chances are that if one color isn't
getting any action a differnt one will.

Don't use a leader, tie it on directly to the lure and don't leave
any line hanging it will cause the spinning action of the lure to
restricted. The most important thing is to make sure the spinner is
    spinning.

When fishing a river or stream, cast across the current and reel in
so as the lure makes a wide sweeping arc. This presents the lure in
a manner that represents a bait fish struggling against the current.

In a lake just cast it out and reel in. Just make sure it's spiining.

I've caught lotsa trout, salmom, bass, pickerel and everything else with
just these two typse of lures.

1562.3Here's my choices.HYEND::POPIENIUCKWed Mar 20 1991 10:2416
I'm going to be on Richardson Lake (one of the Rangeley's) during the
second week in May. (This assumes the ice is out; 2 feet thick still
    last weekend.)

I'm assuming you, like me, will br trolling on your lake. My favorite
salmon and trout producers are a silver Sutton #44, gold or gold and
orange Mooselook Wobblers, grey, green, or black ghost streamers,
Rappala work too. At that time of year I usually troll with any of
these just below the surface and another about 25 or so feet down with
either leadcore line and a Davis spinner or else with the downrigger.

If you use a Davis or a leading spinner of some sort, use a long
leader. I like about 6' or so.

    Good luck. Pete

1562.4Isn't "Ding-A-Ling" a plastic worm??DELNI::JMCDONOUGHWed Mar 20 1991 12:2210
      Re .1
Isn't that a plastic worm?? Curious lure for trout.....I Ain't in any
way sayin it WON'T work...just that I've never heard of trout on a
    plastic worm...

B.T.W.....a 14 incher??? What do you do????....
BEAT them to deat with it?? ;-)

I've had good luck with Mooselook Wobblers. The secret is to bend
the tail of the Mooselook. It's hard to describe in words, but you
want to bend the Wobbler so that the curve roughly matches the curve
of your thumb if you rest it along the 'inside' of the wobbler.

A guy showed me that many years ago fishing the Penobscott R for
landlocks. I thought he was pulling my leg at first, but decided to
try it and have been doing it ever since. It exaggerates the action
of the wobbler, especially at slower trolling/retrieving speeds.

    Good luck,
    Mark

1562.6change change change!ELMAGO::MWOODWed Mar 20 1991 17:1022
Here's what I would do to start. Soak a grey ghost in Dr.
John's salmon formula, put it on a piece of 4 or 6lb. test
trilene xt clear...maybe a 6 ft length, then use the smallest
black swivel you can find to attach it to the rest of your line.
If the rest of your line is anything more then 8lb test, I'd
make the 4 lb leader about 15 to 20 ft...just below the swivel,
put a tiny splitshot. Troll this rig right over the back of the
boat about 40ft back. This is the way to go early in the morning
especially. Experiment constatntly. If you go more then 15 minutes
without a strike change the fly/lure or distance behind the boat,
or go to a thinner line (not if your already at 4, and either way
keep that drag set loose. We're not setting the hook into a large
mouth or a king here. With downriggers or leadcore progress downwards
from 5 ft to 25 in 5 ft increments. Leadcore I'd start at 1 colors,
then go on down to a max of 5 in one color increments...I like the
sutton spoon, but am partial to the copper and silver color myself.
The best method is to troll sewed on bait with leadcore and a long,
light leader....If you hire a guide in Maine to do lake fishing
for Salmon, thats how they'll set you up...Good luck!

1562.7Good luck, let us know how you make outSKIVT::WENERThu Mar 21 1991 07:1612

    	Hi Marty, How's it going?
I'll second the copper/silver combinations for Trout at
least. Works well in the darker humic waters around Vt. so I would
think it would in Maine as well.

P.S. someone a while back in the Flyfish notesfile mentioned witnessing
a catch with rubber worms. Never tried them myself on trout or salmon
    though...

I've never tried them but the locals in the Lincoln area swear
by Gold Super Duper's. They're available at most general stores. Its
a narrow, gold piece of metal bent in a "U" shape and it has a red
    head.
I prefer the "Ghost" flies mentioned earlier and also the 9-3. I
sometimes use tandems as well as the single hook versions. Other Smelt
imitations are good on some lakes also.
I don't know the location of the lake you are going to but I have
found that mother's day weekend is usually the best weekend for ice out
fishing up through most of Penobscot county. If you are going further
North or West it may be later.
    Good Luck and Have Fun,
    Paul

    For all it's worth...

I have found the Cotton Cordell "Ripplin Red Fin" with the silver body and
blue back to be a deadly "King" killer. My other favourite is an A.C
Shiner in Silver/Blue combo.. (I always go with a darker colour combo.
if it's overcast or late in the day)

    Good Luck!
