1557.0. "LARGE Catfish" by RANGER::MACINTYRE (Terminal Angler) Mon Mar 11 1991 13:08

This topic is for the larger species of catfish, Blue, Channel,
    Flathead, etc..

There is another topic in here that talks about catfish, but for the
most part it covers the typical (small) local catfish.

This note is for the big boys - the 50+ pounders that are found in
    other parts of the country.

We're going to set aside some time for these monsters at Santee-Cooper
SC in a couple weeks, and would appreciate any first hand experience
    on bait, tackle, etc..

Catch some small sunfish, and use them for bait (slip sinker rig.) Be prepared
to wait. Use stout tackle.

Last night I was talking with Santee guide Jack Harrison (the guy bass
fishing with Roland on his Santee show a couple weeks ago, Harbormaster
and I have him booked for this Friday, our first day at Santee) and he
mentioned that a couple of days ago the world record Blue catfish was
broken at Santee, with a 109 pounder weighed in!

I've also seen what we used to call "Mud-cats" taken out of the
Mississippi River in Minnesota that went WELL over 100 pounds. There
was a photo in the Minneapolis paper when I was a teen ager...a guy had
a catfish with a rope attachet to it's head...the head was resting on
the guy's shoulder, and the tail of the fish was dregging on the
    ground...

      Oh, yeah...the man was 5'10"......

Funny, we were just talking about catfish over morning coffee
yesterday. One of electricians here at SHR comes from southern
Indiana and got to talking about the big ones, "the mudcats".

Well, when I was in school for the U.S.of Navy at GLakes in '58
one of my cube mates was always talking about them and how they
used to reach over the banks into holes and pull them out, and of
course being from New England and never hearing of these things
I flat out told him his eyes were brown 'cause he was fulla sh**!!

He was a few weeks ahead of me at school and when he got home he
sent me a photo of himself and his dad standing aside thier '56
ford crown victoria with 4 of these cats on the hood. Heads and
tails hanging over the fenders. I kept it long enough to bring
it home and show the troops around here. Wish I still had it.

Anyway, maybe one of you guys (ladies included) just might know
him. David Pickle from Love, Miss. Guess he showed me just who
    was fulla crapolla!!
