1555.0. "NH/Mass Boat registrations" by SENIOR::PENNING () Fri Mar 08 1991 16:23

Can someone please clear up the new laws regarding boat registration
in Mass and N.H.. Do you still need to register your boat in both states?
Also what other States are fishable on a Mass. registration?

    Thanks,

    Wildman

As of 1/01/91 the states are resipricating (sp) the Bow numbers,
but you need a "Water Use" sticker in New Hampshire.

P.S. If you need more clarity call the
         Boat registration desk in Concord.

Can you state your source for the 'water use' sticker requirement?

That's a new one to me. I'm under the impression that we are now 100%
reciprocal (with normal primary use constraints).

A year or so ago I was lobbying heavy for the changes, writing letters,
talking to all the beaurocrats, reading the proposed bills, etc..

But since the ball went in motion (and Mass started letting us NHerites
in last year) I have been watching from the sidelines, so I haven't read
the actual law, but I've been keeping an ear on the subject and this is
the first time I've heard of this.

    re.2

Here in the NIO plant (Salem,N.H.) he had a lunchtime seminar
on boating safety given by ???? MacDonald (I can't remember his first
name). At that time he had talked about this issue and stated that a
non-resident bow numbered boat would need the water use sticker which
is what they give you every year for registering. I called Concord
yesterday to get more clarity on this subject. They said that you do
not need the water use permit for non-resident bow numbers and the
state will recognize all other registrations. Sorry for the misleading
    information.

To answer the orginal question....your Mass sticker is good in every
state in the Union except Alaska and Maryland now (unless these states
have also passed new laws in the last year). NH was one of three states
that did not recognize other states stickers. Now there are two (I
    think).

Anyway, the way the NH people explained things to me at the Centrum Sports
Show, all you need is a fishing license now unless you are going to be
there longer than thirty days (in a row).

1555.6Register In N.H. Use In Mass.PCCAD1::RICHARDJBluegrass,Music Aged to PerfectionWed Apr 24 1991 17:0515
Well get this ! I was talking to my barber the other day, and telling
him how I hate paying $45.00 in Mass to put my boat in the water.
$15.00 for the title and $30.00 for the registration. He says, OH,
just get it registered for N.H. for $13.00. He said that you only
need to register it for the state that of your primary use. If
you get stopped by the Law, just tellem your primary use is in
N.H. Says he's got stopped already and it worked.

    Wach ya think ?

I would think Mass. would of tighten a loop hole that would loose them
    $$$$ ?

My boat will be used all over New England this season, and I registered
    in NH for two reasons:
    1. Other states seem to hate to see MA licences on cars and MA
    registrations on boats, and
    2. I just couldn't stand the notion of dealing with the MA bureaucracy
to register my boat, which will see minimal, if any, use in MA.

Just call the marina or city hall in NH where you will be registering
your boat to make sure you have all the paperwork with you that you'll
need, and you'll be all set in NH.
