1551.0. "Boat Insurance?" by MTADMS::DUPRE (bust a move for the fish'n hole) Wed Mar 06 1991 12:42

There may be a note in here on this but I couldn't see one. Do the
boat owners in this notes file have boat insurance and is it
recommended to have insurance?

Yes, Yes and Yes!!!

Boat insurance is a bargain! I wouldn't dream of not having insurance.
Even with my old boat, a 14' alumin w/ a 9.9hp it paid off big time.
I hit a rock (or two, or three...) which caused it too leak a bit.
I collected and wound up repairing it for *substantially* less!!!

Ask all of the people in here who have wiped out their lower units if
they think insurance is worthwhile!

From what I've heard, many people don't think of using boat insurance
even if they have it! If you wipe out an expensive prop, that's an
accident, collect!!!

I'm with Don on this one!! Insurance on my boat is only $89 per year
and that also covers fire and theft. I got into a wicked accident last
year where my boat was damaged beyond repair and luckily for me Don had
insurance!! The only thing is that I was towing my boat back from
Florida at the time 8^)

The way I figure it I spend more on fishing equipment each year so $89
is real cheap for me just to make sure that I'm covered.

I've never carried insurance on my fresh water craft...a couple
canoes and a 14' aluminum boat. I probably should have and if its
really only $89 or so I think I will this year. (My son is itching
to use the 14 footer this Summer.)
My salt water boat is well covered and it has paid off. As a
matter of fact its the only insurance that ever has for me. I damaged
my lower unit the first year and had an auxilliary motor stolen two
years ago. After the second claim I had to find another insurance
company (they hate to pay) but I had no problem doing so.
I wish the insurance on my big boat was a lot lower, I keep
reducing the coverage to compensate for depreciation but it still
costs about $450 per year. As I said before however, it has paid off.

Only $89 per year. With what Ins company. For what converage?

I'm with Metpay and my insurance is 300+ per year for a 1985 22' angler
with a new 1989 150hp engine. Should I shop around?

>>Only $89 per year. With what Ins company. For what converage?

It's more of a function of what the boat is worth and how/where it will
be used than the coverage.

Martial's boat is a trailered 14' sea nymph fishin machine w/ 20hp
merc. Your 22 footer w/ a 150hp is obviously worth a few more bucks
and probably sits in the water most of the time.

I think I'm paying around $120 for 16' Lowe alum bass boat w/40hp
(insured for $8.7K list).

My 14' w/25hp Merc and trailer are cover for $6500 or Replacement costs
if higher along with all the medical stuff for $67 a year. My policy is
with Allstate and my agent was out of Nashua, N.H. right by the old DEC
plant (NUO) next to Route 3.

Guy

1551.7What about Liability Coverage!!!!DEMING::MATTSONThu Mar 07 1991 13:2316
I can't believe that nobody has mentioned anything about Liability
coverage. That's the biggest reason I have it on my boat. If you hit
a wave or rough water and someone gets thrown from your boat and gets
hurt, and you don't have any coverage, bye bye boat, car, house, ect,
ect.

Some tournaments require that the boat owners have liability
coverage and you have to have the policy there to prove it. When
somebody gets hurt or god forbid killed because of a boating or any
other mishap, the dollars signs start lighting up in there eyes or
their relatives eyes. You might not think that your best friend in the
world would ever sue you, but if he gets hurt bad enough things change.
I've seen this happen many times. Big money brings out the worst in
most people.

re: .4 I have State Farm Insurance out of Nashua. I have found them to
be one of the cheapest around! Forget Metpay...because all you do with
them is just PAY AND PAY AND...The only good thing about them is that
you can have the PAYments deducted from your PAYcheck.(just my opinion)

As Don mention I only have a 14' Seanymph with a 20 hp Merc, pricing
would vary depending on what you have.

1551.9Allstate for usDECWET::HELSELLegitimate sporting purposeThu Mar 07 1991 14:3213
I had my boat insurance through a fishing buddy; Aetna. He has my
house, car, boat etc. I was paying around $200 and some odd change
on a $10K boat. Lot's of liability insurance etc.

Then one day my agent called *me* and told me we were getting ripped
off. (his boat had been insured by Aetna as well) He shopped around
to check on the competitiveness of the rates he was offering customers
and found that Allstate has incredibly low rates. He switched his policy
to Allstate and he had the Allstate rep send me an application. My
insurance is down to like $85 or something. The difference was phenominal
and I have the same coverage.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Last year I remember calling Allstate to insure my boat.

I think they told me that they no longer take new MA customers or
don't take new boat customers any longer ...or you needed to
insure your house with them.

Whatever the problem was with Allstate, I ended up insuring
with Prudential, they were a lot cheaper than Metpay and they didn't
lay down a lot of conditions for coverage.

If Allstate now insures MA boat owners that don't have a homeowners
policy with them please let us know. I think they might be cheaper
than Prudential.
1551.11Coverage for $75.00 a year!MTADMS::DUPREbust a move for the fish'n holeThu Mar 07 1991 15:267
Well I just insured my boat for $75.00 for the year at replacement
value of $6,000.00 through Allstate. This includes $300,000 Liability,
$1,000 med per person and $250.00 deductable. The boat is a 79 Terri
Bass Boss w/25hp Evinrud and a trailer. I will feel better driving on
the waters this year.

1551.15Motor too big for boat!HPSTEK::RHUFFMon Jul 15 1991 17:2611
I just purchased a 15' hydra bass boat which came with a 90 hp
motor. My insurance company, Commerce, will not insure the boat.
They say it goes too fast! I was told that I will have several
problems insuring it as it is too small for the motor. The boat plate
says 115 hp max. They still won't help me. I was told I will have to
go through Loyds of London! I can't believe this. My agent also told
me to sell the boat! Nice!

Any help would be great!

Rod, Why not trot over to Metpay? That's where I have mine insured
(although I don't have the HP you do.). I doubt they'd refuse you.

I've got a 15ft Starcraft with an 88hp outboard on it. The boat
is rated for a 90hp. Met Pay insured it without any questions.

Hmmm... I've got just the opposite problem with Metpay.

I just transferred my car insurance over to Metpay and then tried to insure
my boat. They said they wouldn't touch it unless it was valued over $6,000.

Doesn't make sense to me.
