1537.0. "St. Lawrence River Thousand Islands area?" by POBOX::KOCH (Ever drop kicked a VS2000?) Sun Feb 10 1991 15:05

Anyone else have any experience or recommendations fishing for bass,
panfish, or northerns in the St. Lawrence River Thousand Islands area
near Alexandria, NY in the middle of July?

Dan, I fished the river last september and the biggest problem
that day was high winds that can turn the river into an ocean. It was
the roughest water I was ever on. We launched out of Clayton and went
only about 4 miles up the river. We fished the many inlets that are
filled with hydrila and had success with grubs by fishing in the holes.
I also picked up a few pike with spinner baits. The rat seems to be a
good bait to fish the hydrila or other top water baits that are
weedless. We tried to fish for smallmouth but most of the islands and
rocky shoals were exposed to the wind and navigating and fishing at
the same time was impossible. On the way back in we had to drive with
the bilge pump on and our tackle boxes were floating in the boat. So
just because it is a river treat it as a large lake that can churn
on a windy day. I was definitely impressed with the river and the
type of fishing structure that is available. I hope to get up there
and fish it more than one day.
