1535.0. "Zebra Mussels" by MOOV02::MROWKA () Fri Feb 01 1991 10:52

	Has anyone read the acticle on Zebra Mussels? I think it was
in Sports Illustrated or National Geographic. Zebra Mussels
are tiny Musssels that have a amazing ability to reproduce.They have been in
Europe for a number of years, and were found in the Great lakes a few years
ago. They can get inside boat engines and clog the colling system. They have
gottem into hydro electric generators and shut down power to cities. The
electric company has to now spend millions to clean them off. The larva
can simply be in your boat engine cooling water and when you trailer from
and infected area to a new one they be spread. They can survive large water
temperature variations and have very few natraul predators.

They can destroy a good fishery. The article did not mention any plans to
control this. I think this subject needs more press so responsible sportsman
can pass the word. The only way mentioned to help so far is to insure that
water from a infected water is not transporterd to non infected waters.

Anyone with additional info on this please reply to this note. I will se if I
can find the article if any one is interested.

1535.3Possible solution to the problem ...SPUDDS::MCKENZIENever say "Never say "Never !"".Mon Feb 04 1991 07:017
I was watching CNN the other day and they reported that some
researchers at I believe the University of Minnesota think
they may have found a solution to the problem. They found that
potassium chloride stops their reproduction without affecting
other marine life. Did anyone else see hear about this.

1535.5If it's CNN, you're lucky if you get 30 seconds of info ...SPUDDS::MCKENZIENever say "Never say "Never !"".Mon Feb 04 1991 13:118
John,

They didn't mention any specific types. I was basically
quoting what the reporter stated. I was skeptical about
the stated effects of potassium chloride on marine life
but don't have any more info.

1535.6PBS Show On The Great Lakes 2/6/91WILLEE::MANLEYThu Feb 07 1991 16:427
    Anybody catch the show on PBS last night about the Great Lakes? They
    talked about the Zebra Mussel infestation as well as the Lamprey eels,
    Alewifes and some plankton species that eats the plankton that the
    small trout/salmon eat. This particular plankton has a barb on its
    back, so the small trout/salmon won't eat it.

    Sorry I didn't get it taped. I wish I had because I grew up on the
    shores of Northern Lake Michigan and found out first hand about the
    Lamprey eels and Alewives. I'll check with my folks and brother to
    see if possibly they taped it.

    Tom,
1535.10Use hot water!POBOX::KOCHEver drop kicked a VS2000?Sun Feb 10 1991 15:128
    Here in the Chicago area, power plant researchers have discovered that
    by recycling cooling water till it reaches a higher than normal temp
    (can't remember level) then flushing infested intakes seems to
    accomplish the same or better results than the chemical flushes, and at
    less cost. We are facing a major danger here in Lake Michigan from the
    little buggers.
