1509.1 | Whats the questions again? | CGVAX2::HAGERTY | Jack Hagerty KI1X | Fri Oct 26 1990 15:19 | 21 |
| First - screw the clocks. Im not setting mine back this time. If they
want me to an 8 am meeting, let em figure out what MY watch says.
Second - Ray, glad to see you feeling better. My best, my prayers. But
DONT return to NH. I know you miss it. But the Bandit and I are
thinking of FISHING tomorrow. (Bass fishing) And they are talking SNOW
here. Give me a break. It will just be like steelhead day I guess.
Third - I got to buy a new truck. A new tow vechile for the baot. Boat
is I guess about 2500 lbs (16+ fot glass, 70 hp, 22 gallon inboard
tank, gear, + trailer. I own a 4x4 Nissan King-cab. Love it.
Its tight, Put a cap on the back so I can still do dump stuff and still
go steelheading in NY during winter months and hav protection of gear
from the weather. But its a 4 cylinder. I need a 6 in that truck. ANd
cant take it anymore.
Looking at a Pathfinder. 6 cylinders. But it TOO Pretty. I cant put the
BAndit in that. What a mess he makes. How I go to the dump?
Who has switched from Japan to USA and the reverse?
PLEASE no USA vs Japan debate.
This should get us at least one rathole.

| It's kinda nice to have a place in the conference specifically geared
to bashing The Legend. I mean, what's a RAT-hole for ? Legend, as long
as I make the sandwiches, and as long as there is beer, there is no way
hagerty loses 100, or that I don't gain 100. Besides, we need that
extra layer of fat to keep us warm when we're steelheadin' with REAL
MEN in Feb. while you're home makin' doilies and whining about how cold
it is outside. Do yourself a favor - knit some mittens an' pin 'em to
your snowsuit. If you sat in the front of the U.S.S. Gitzit', it'd be a
submarine...

1509.6 | Lookout non technical notesfiles | DELNI::OTA | | Mon Nov 26 1990 11:24 | 16 |
| I just saw a note from Infante instucting all data center managers not
to back up non technical notesfiles and to severely restrict their
continued use. I am not sure what ths means, but it does not bode well
in my book. His claim is legitimate which is most notes files do not
add to the direct productivity of employees. however, I believe that
indirectly we become more productive because notesfiles like this one
allow us to relax and escape the pressures of the job. I am not being
eloquent here, but I just hope management doesn't go overboard and
restrict or discontinue notesfiles like this. I cannot see how
allowing us to slip into a notesfile for enjoyment and relaxation for a
few minutes a day is hurting DEC.
I just don't want to see if this is going to become the next water
bottle or Wall Street Journal type of cut.

1509.20 | Bashing is ok in the bashing section | DELNI::OTA | | Tue Jan 22 1991 17:41 | 19 |
| Nah I have to side with the moderators on this one. I think the main
purpose of this notesfile is to ask technical questions about fishing.
I know for myself, I write a lot of notes asking about various types of
tackle, equipment etc. On line and off line I get a great deal of
bashing about my notes. Off line I could care less, On line though I
really think some of those comments are a bit hard bashing espcially
for people who don't know your kidding. If I were a novice and had
little knowledge about how to fish, I would be very apprehensive
asking questions if I read some of the bashing others get for asking.
I know most of you clowns are totally harmless :^) but, I think the
bashing should stay in the bashing sections only and not leak into the
other areas of the notesfile.
Bashing is ok, in the bashing sections, cause you can Next Unseen
this whole note, keep it out of the technical sides though.

| Well, welcome to the fishing file! Funny you should mention the
GREATEST FISHERMAN in the file in your first note. What is a Legend
you ask? Well my friend. A Legend is one who knows everything there
is to know about fishing. But not only that, he knows how to have a
good time...whether he catches fish or not. I'm sure as you scan the
notes from last year you will realize that I had a differcult year...to
say the least. I may not have won any of the Tournies I said I would,
but dam, I had one hell of a good time!
There are some guys that take there fishing far to seriously....I'm
not one of them. I great at it, and USUALLY can out fish anyone in
this file...(excluding Bourgault) who has $10.00 of my money.
But when it's all said and done....you can always count on the Legend
to catch the BIG ONE...TIME AND TIME AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Hell, I'm tired of catching fish in the 6-8 pound range!
Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for your camping trip. But there
are some fine ROOKIES in here that will point you in the right
direction.
Welcome to the file! And in the future....when you mention my name
make sure you Capitalize the "L" in LEGEND....or you are going to hate
me as much as 90% of the people in here do.

duties!! I thought the person asked in his note "what is a Legend"
(notice the capital L) so Don Mac answered his question on vacation
spot and beautifully answered the mystery question of what is a LEGEND?
Then the Legend replied with his explanations on why he can't live up
to his name and the note got moved to the RATHOLE!
I thought the person asked a good question and Legend had a good reply.
I can't understand why John's note was moved and Don's wasn't? Does
this mean if we jokingly ask a question while asking a serious one we
have to reply in the Rathole?
Just wondering!

Had Don's reply not included anything that was on-topic (having to do with
vacation spots) I would have been inclined to move it too. Since it did include
on-topic info, it had to stand. Since Legend's reply included no factual
information whatsoever that was related to the topic, there was no reason not to
move it.
I agree that fishing notes is a fun place to write notes that really don't do
much but poke fun at people or explore essentially meaningless questions (like
what is the legend?). However, a fair number of noters utilize the resource
to get information from other noters. Given that exchanging information is
a more effective raison d'tre than playing, we have to ensure that the S/N
ratioof notes in here remains reasonably high. One way to do this is to move
the "garbage" notes into one or two main strings. Now it's really helpful
if all the noters put their content-lite replies in one place- but if they
don't, somebody has to do it.
As a noter, I find it rather annoying when I attempt to research a subject in
here by looking up the keyword and exploring the related notes, only to find
that out of the 20 notes in the related string, 3 have information while
17 are just back and forth farting around. There's no reason why we can't keep
them separate.
I'm not going to attempt to quell the back and forth playing around, because
I think it is a useful outlet. However, I don't think that we should pollute
the entire file with it. I know that this is trying to be "all things to all
people" and that it can't possibly work to the full satisfaction of all parties.
However, I believe that the best utilization of DEC's resources requires that
we at least try.
If you have problems with the way this file is moderated by me or any other
moderators, please send us mail. We are really trying to make this file the
best we can make it; if we fail, it's up to you to tell us so and guide us
to do a better job.

I guess I'll have to read it daily now to avoid further provocations.
That shouldn't be too difficult now that I know what all the Legend
replies and references are about. To answer one of the old questions
(I forget which note), Copenhagen. Only. Bazooka is better than
Doublemint, Skoal, and the similar others.
One thing I'd like to say as a newcomer is that the chop busting is
pretty obvious and is hard to mistake as serious.
Anyway, I look forward to imparting my wisdom on each of you as well
as learning from your obvious mistakes. How was that at getting into
the spirit?

Boy, do I hate it when this happens! I take a day off and all hell
breaks loose. I'll make an attempt to sent the record on a few notes
and let you know what the Legend thinks.....Can't wait,...HA?
re.50 Don, you've been skunked a number of times. Tell us how many
fish you caught last year when you were in Florida. We'll take that
total and divide it by 10 DAYS!!
re.51 Sully, SHUT YOUR HOLE!
re.52 You run me over....YOU BETTER MAKE SURE YOU FINISH THE JOB....if
not, you're going to need a doctor...DOCTAH!
re.53 OBVIOUS....the only thing obvious to a lot of us....is the fact
you moderators are good at covering each others asses!
re.54 NICE COME BACK....You know the Kiv?
re.55 Who cares what kind of lures they buy?! Really? Neither of
them have anything going for them....Well, at least Mattson
as nice HAIR!
re.56 Sully, SHUT YOUR HOLE!
re.57 Let's face it KIV, Sully looks good to you whether he has a
cooler of beer or not.
re.58 Oops!! You screwed up ha? Well, from the look of things you
don't come across as being the sharpest knife in the draw. If
you're as STUPID as you appear to be, you're going to fit right
in with OTA, KIV, and DON MAC and the rest of them.
re.61 Nice job trying to suck up to Sully. Leave him alone, he'll be
fine....he probably got a haircut that day at WOODCHUCKS ARE US
and someone mistakened him for PUCK-SA-TONI PHIL.
And I can't leave without asking one final question.....OTA, do you
know how to do anything without asking us PROS! Christ, you have more
questions than my 9 year old son Joshua.
Call me and I'll give you my home phone, when you have a question,
call Josh....the space we'll save alone will be worth the phone call.
SHUT UP for five minutes!

pictures however suprisingly enough certain folks who profess to be
great fishermen do not have pictures in here, dig dig :^}
Anyway I have to admit the picture the "Legend" sent in is quite awe
inspiring until I looked through a magnifying glass and noticed the
service merchandize price tag in the corner. It seems his bass bears a
strong resemblence to the trick fish you buy from them. Care to
explain why the bottom of the bass has c batteries sticking out?

John,
You have seemed to ignore a note placed in here with some
statements made by you regarding lake legislation /no ski zones speed
zones in front of your house on winni. John are you one of these
people who builds a bigger dock to own more lake? John you own to
the mean low water mark and nothing more!
Also there was a note saying something about sewerage from your area
at winni getting into the lake.
If you'd like some credibility here, I think you should address these
items so we can see if your doing this for the environment or as a
hidden agenda for the J. H-C "quiet it's my lake" show at winni.
Failure to address these comments made to you will make me belive
they are all correct. In that case you should sease writing in this

I will say though, it is very difficult to see someone smiling from

gonna take the time to put a reply in at least put in some smilely
faces so people know your kidding. This is not directed just to you

You guys have to remember that this notesfile is a public resource on
one of the world's largest networks. You may think of it as a tightnit

By far the bulk of our readership is read-only.
You cannot assume people know you are kidding.
Now, to go down the rathole further, I'm taking a little abuse for
the following:
>> All that a stupid comment like that does is reinforce many NHerites

For the record, that attitude does exist, but I don't share it. All I
said was that Dave's comments reinforced it. If you recall, as I

legislation that backed up that attitude.

| Don,
Good luck with the squirrels!!
My mom had squirrels in her attic a few years ago. She tried everthing
to get rid of them. Traps didn't work because more would just come in
after the others were taken away. A roofer came out and patched the
hole they were using. The squirrels just chewed right threw again.
The roofer came back and put sheet metal over the hole. Squirrels have
sharp teeth :-) you guessed it, they chewed right threw the metal.
Somebody told her to put moth balls in the attic that the smell would
drive them away. Mom found the moth balls in her driveway the day after
she put them in the attic. Smart squirrels. The thing that worked is
most depressing. Mom had a beautiful old oak tree removed from along
side her house, this was their device for getting on the roof.
Now mom swears the critters sit in her driveway and give her dirty
looks.

Then why did you ask for the conversation to be scrapped instaed of
asking for it to be moved? You didn't like it so you wanted it deleted.
AAnd while the discussion wandered a bit from the original topic, it
was still relevant. Seeing bass are caught during the spawn and could be moved
from their nest, how they protect their nest, who protects the nest, and how
they are told apart is actualy very relevent to the topic. Ohh but a few
didn't like what was written, or could care less about it, or whatever and
decided becuase it didn't interest them it should be deleted.

John,
I was fishing w. my brother at Walden on Saturday, and we saw lots of
bass on their nests, so the spawn is in full swing there. We also saw
a guy fishing from the shore with at least 4 bass on a stringer, and
got just ticked enough to tell the first ranger we saw. He informed us
that the limit for bass (even this time of year) in Mass is 5. Yikes!
I hope not too many people take advantage of that. Good thing Walden is
mostly a trout pond anyway. (Lots of "meat" fishermen there, though,
and some of those guys look like they'd gladly clean the place out
singlehandedly if they could, w/o a second thought.)
So, no, there is no law (in Mass) that says release bass during the
spawn, and what "ethic" is practiced in that regard is up for debate.

I wouldnt't criticize anyone who had 4 fish on a stringer. I mean as
long as they had a valid fishing license what business is it of yours?
Lets face it, people eat bass, trout, deer, bear, geese, etc, etc. As long
as they have a license to catch/kill then they are with-in their legal
bounds. To call a game warden for 4 fish on a stringer is pretty
chicken shit to me, you don't know the rules/law.

| Perhaps I forgot to mention that we didn'g KNOW what he limit was,
though my brother said that he thought it was 2, which was why we were
irritated that this guy may have been overdoing it, and why we told the
ranger about him. When he told us that the limit was 5, well, wouldn't
you know it, I felt better about the whole thing!
Don't you feel better now, too..?
(I knew you would!)
AND BESIDES, hasn't the topic lately been about whether or not
the practice of taking fish during the spawn is a good idea? You're
right, it's NO business of mine what anyone does if they're licensed
and operate w/in the limits, because that's what we all agree to do
when we buy our licenses, isn't it? If so, then, if we see someone
poaching (which is what that would have been guilty of had the limit
been 2) are we supposed to ignore it?
Look, I know plenty of guys who think it's a sin to ever keep a fish,
and some who think it's a sin to let one go, but as long as everyone
operates w/in the law, no one has a right to object, though everyone
can still express his opinion.
You've expressed yours, I've expressed mine. Leave the "chicken poop"

Ray,
We thought the guy WAS over the limit. We thought the limit was two.
When we talked to the warden, we didn't say, "Go get that guy, he's over
the limit," we asked what the limit was, because we thought we saw a guy
who looked like he might be taking too many fish. He told us the limit
was 5, so we didn't "turn the warden on him." End of story. Sorry if

I can't say whether some bass sleep, but I can say that I've caught
alot of bass at night. Personally, I don't think I've fished much past
1-2am, but I know lots of folks who have fished all night - catching fish
throughout the night. I've caught bass on noisy lures as well as
silent plastic worms. No luminescent lures, thank you. In open water
and on shallow structure - none likely on the nests - for most of my night
fishing has been later in the year.
Your point about "no set bass behavior" is probably the only concrete
fact that has come from any of these conversations, from anyone.
Don't believe everything you read. And for every fish you happen to
bump into there are millions that you have not seen. There are
exceptions to nearly every rule that anyone can associate with fishing.
Out of curioisty, are you or have you ever been a fisherman? If so, to
what extent? (I haven't read all of your replies so you may have
already stated this.)
I know a great deal can be learned from underwater excursions, but a
fair amount can be learned from spending countless hours fishing for
them as well.
Personally, I enjoy reading about your observations. It helps
bring an unseen world into focus.
BUT be ready for alot of rusty ol' fisherman to give you lots of
grief when you try and oversimplify somthing with a scientific
sounding statement that is based upon assumptions from your casual
observations which comes across as "this is the way it is".
If countless hours on the water have told us fishermen otherise, we'll
be SURE to let you know! 8^)

| Nobody said that fish don't sleep. You made a generalization
something like "at night they're asleep you know". I disagreed with
that statement. I have a hard time believing that fish would be at
ease and act normally with a diver anywhere in the area. We know that
they're sensitive to low frequency vibrations, which is what is
generally accepted as the function of the lateral line. Between your
bubbles and the amount of water you displace/move as you move around
I feel that at least some of the fish would be shall we say nervous
about something with more than 100X their mass in the vicinity.
Fishing in an area that does not hold fish at the present time....
It's a problem for all of us, so we study the species we're interested
in so we can figure out where they >should< be given the conditions at
the time. We search for a "pattern" that the fish are on, whether
we're bass fishing, fly fishing for trout, etc.
Night fishing. I don't know anyone who night fishes spawning bass.
Some people probably do. I agree with what Don Mac wrote. My best
night lures include black Jitterbugs, black worms, black Gitzits, and
black spinnerbaits. You choose, 2 noisemakers and 2 soft, quiet lures.
All in black. It is commonly accepted that black gives a better
contrast/silouette in extremely low light conditions. I know other
people who like white or chartreuse at night.
There are plenty of books available from people who have gone to
the trouble to compile information from hundreds of scientific studies
for all of us average fishermen. I don't mean the typical magazine
articles that are useless if you've been fishing for more than a few
years. I don't mean the typical F+G or tourist pamphlets that were
written years ago either. I mean good, well written, informative,
CURRENT books that give you info from a lot of varied sources AND ask
questions or admit when information is not complete. I'll check on a
few titles if people are interested.
I think one of the other questions someone asked John was whether
he is a fisherman or not. From what you write you have fished during
each of 17 years. That does not answer the question. My wife has
fished during each of the last 17 years and many times before we were
together. She is honest about not being a "fisherperson" if she is
asked. Sure, she likes to fish. Does she know anything about the
sport? She knows it's fun, and that's all she cares about. From
your entries in notes I feel that you are a diver who occasionally
fishes. I do not feel that you are a "fisherman" who also dives.

Yup. I have an attitude. I try to state whether something is my
opinion, generally accepted knowledge, or something that I saw a few
times. If I've seen enough to back up my statements I'll even call
something fact. But, if I'm going to talk about worms I'll call them
worms. If someone asks for more clarification I'll even give the
scientific names..... IF someone asks. I'm in here to try to help
the average fisherman. The guy or girl just like me who loves the
sport and wants to learn more. I don't know it all, and I don't

| >> Do you find that plastic worms work better in less-clear water?
In my opinion, not really. The plastic "nematode" is a natural
looking, subtle bait. It does not "call" fish to it. Fish see it
and respond to it.
Other lures with more attracting attributes, such as blades and rattles
emit vibrations which attract the fish. These types of baits can be
more effective in "less-clear" water.
However, the plastic worm does work well in dirty water as well - it's
just not as visible from the distance it would be in clearer water.
>> Is the night fishing just as good in August as in May or June?
I believe the fish feed more at night in the summer due to the water
temperatures. In waters where the day time surface temp is real high,
the surface temp will cool with the night and make the fish more active.
Perhaps they sleep in the deeper cooler water during the day in such
bodies of water. (?)
>> Not a million, I'm sure. What several years of observation have led me
>>to understand is that fish are not as numerous as many people would
True, not a million. I said millions. I could have said billions.
I was talking fish in general. Not just those who are in the same pond
as you at the moment.
>> one the size of Winnipesaukee. (Not expecting that to happen to
>>the bass any time soon, unless it's true that there is no limit on bass
>>any time of year in NH now, as of this season.) The salmon and trout
Not true. If by limit you mean number of fish. NH has a 5 fish limit
most of the year, 2 fish thru the ice and May 1-June 30, with
exception of May 15-June 15 is catch and immediate release. If by
limit you mean legal length, NH has never had a length limit.

| I just started reading this conference today and I must admit you
boys are the most sarcastic and obnoxious people I dont know...but I
like it. Man I almost busted a gut a fiew times.
Getting to the point of my writing here. It is to defend Mr
Hickscourant that you boys are lambasting with are you a
Fisherman-Diver or Diver-Fisherman. I am a Fisherman-Diver specializing
in catching and observing Small Mouth Bass and Northern Pikes. I have
witnessed like my co-diver fish sleeping. I have yet to see a Bass
sleep, but I have seen LARGE LUNKER NORTHERNS laying on their sides
sleeping. That has to be the freekiest thing to see this big fish that
usually dart away when they see you just lay there motionless, you can
usually get to within 5ft and then they dart away, slugishly. Small
mouths are more curious than you may believe, they are affraid at first
of a diver or snorkeler, but they wont stray too far. If you stay in
the same spot for a while the fish will come closer and if you can
manage to bring worms with you they will take it (only if you let it
drop infront of you). I suggest that all you so called fisherman to buy
a mask, snorkel and fins, jump into your nearest lake and attempt to
observe the fish you are trying to catch.Granted this method wont work
with some species as they are too deep for snorkelers, but you can
practically live with small mouths when snorkeling. This translates
into great fishing spots. My favorite is directly infront of a dock on
the other side of my lake in about 20ft of water with only heavy weed
cover,I have a 5 1/2 lb small mouth on my wall as proof,to my story.
AND THATS A FACT !
All questions are welcome and yes I am wearing a flak jacket so blast
away. 8*)

As many of you already know, the Crazy Crawler (large size) is my FAVORITE

thing that I like about it is that the wings can be bent to fine-tune the
